A nice replacement for paper. This is in itself a perpetual stack of blank sheets ;-)

But that's where it stops. Any further purpose is just being an expensive gadget... conclusion being it's great for offices that waste & shred tons of paper every week only to pass memos, notes and reports between desks less than 6 ft appart for each other.

now that the ipad is out and it's $499 doesn't the price of the iphone and iphone 3gs (without the contract) seem too much or any iphone like product? even the price of the itouch price should be in consideration.

The iPad is not a replacement for a NoteBook/Laptop, it is a Purpose driven, touch-based interface where you should be focused on a single task and not hopping back and forth between many applications. If you think about it from that perspective, there's huge potential. If you're thinking about it from the perspective of a better laptop/netbook, then you'll be disappointed.

Great first look. It seems like Apple have managed to re-invent another genre. It's just a shame they will lock the thing down so much. An inbuilt SD card reader is the big missing piece, but then Apple couldn't charge a premium for the internal storage. I still want one though!

@hexix2 ummm, I think the difficulty in transporting the keyboard dock was a criticism, and the option for a stand and a bluetooth keyboard was the solution? Plus, Andy flat-out said that this is not a laptop replacement for doing serious work, this is something different.

@martynm You're kind of missing my point, aren't you? The fact that they're talking about how to bring a keyboard with them is just silly. Why would you pack this thing, a keyboard, a camera attachment adapter, etc? People are going out of their way to fit an iPad in their life when they've already 100% solved these problems with laptops.

Do these people not even hear themselves? They're talking about how to best bring an accessory keyboard so that they can actually get work done on the iPad. So your rationalization for buying this thing was it's somehow more convenient than a laptop or netbook, but then you need to pack a keyboard with in case you actually want to do something other than watch a video? Only Apple can convince people to buy their products when they already have better solutions.

Re: Printing from the iPad... I have managed over 5 years without even owning a printer. During that time I've spent under $50 at Kinkos. USB thumb drive, and online storage make printing from the iPad unnecessary.

But I do agree with what Andy said in that having a client running for the iPad to send print jobs to would be a good idea. Perhaps Dropbox + Hazel could be setup to do the same thing.

@jasonh1234 there are some for iphone with wifi printers (or shared printers by a computer) so why not ipad ? they will work the same.

Don't get me wrong the iPad is cool but it's hardly anything to be super excited about. Just take your iPhone out of your pocket and you get a similar experience.

I highly doubt it will never crash. My iPhone has crashed at least 50 times this year and my mom has to restart her iPhone every day because she stops receiving texts after about 6 hours of it being on.
