to me, the big band jazz of 1920's--1940's was the absolute pinnacle of western music. ever since that golden age passed, things have been in a downward spiral straight into the gutter, with no signs of stopping any time soon. that's why our generation have to content with the horrid noise they call "music" today. im truly glad that some people like max and his band are working hard to keep jazz true to its essence. now all we need is for some composers to write some real music like this.
The great Max Raabe and the incomparable Palast Orchestra. They always lift my spirits. This accomplished, polished ensemble is second to none. The orchestral arrangements are inventive, often playful, and never anything less than a feast for the ears. And Max is, of course, in a category all by himself. I hope it's not too lonely at the top.
my grandfather actually wrote lyrics for this style of music in New York back in the 30s, and even though I've never heard his songs- lost to history- and never heard much of this growing up, I just can't get enough now. It is gorgeous, classy, and fun!
@iBook3503332 - I am on the other end of the age spectrum and I write to agree with you, and congratulate you on your good taste at such a tender age.
@tavriadriver Hi there - they are using the arrangement by Sid Phillips which was recorded in the UK by the Joe Loss Band in 1934. This band is note-perfect - well done Palast Orchester!
At the time this kind of music was popular, the focus was on the band, not the singer. The vocalist's job was to stand up, sing, then sit down. In most cases it was being danced to, so you wouldn't even be looking at the singer most of the time. He is recreating how it was done at the time, and does it well.
@LewStone07 I think Paul Whiteman said the over-emphasis on vocalists ended up hurting the dance band industry, though I'm sure there were many other factors involved too.

Not much of an entertainer... He sung great but he didn't really perform, did he? Could have moved around or smiled some. Didn't look to me like his cares had gone over his shoulder.
I see what you're saying, but...he actually performs these songs exactly as they were done in the style of the times. And the arrangements for the orchestra are also originals. I've seen him live and...it was a great performance. He speaks between songs in a wonderful, laconic, dry way...very entertaining!
He is allowing his band/musicians to be featured which is a sign of those times and should be resurrected. This isn't rap. lol. It's the whole package, and he is recreating an amazing period that was lost.
What a grand performance, with Max in that high wing-tip collar and tuxedo, stepping up to the mike unsmiling and belting out the lyrics with just a trace of a charming accent, all to the background of the wonderful Palace Orchestra! It's like a trip back into time.
If I remember correctly, and I'm not too sure on the last two phrases, but it's: Over my shoulder goes one care Over my shoulder go two cares Why should I cry ? its blue above Im free at last and in love Over my shoulder goes three cares Over my shoulder goes four cares I like to travel Its gone beyond recall Over my shoulder goes it all!
Greetings from the UK Great video 5stars.Discovered the Palast Orchester eight years ago Have had to go on the German site to find them. Keep up the good work,This is what you call great music that never ages.
@band222 Lucky you!! How I envy your finding them 8 years ago. I found them only a few months ago when their show from Carnegie Hall aired. I have been making up for lost time by watching everything on youtube - over and over, while buying DVDs and CDs as I can. Can't get enough of these talented guys.

Over my shoulder goes one care; over my shoulder go two cares
Why should I cry - it's blue above
I'm free at last and I'm in love
Over my shoulder go three cares; over my shoulder go four cares
Bye bye to trouble - it's gone beyond recall
Over my shoulder goes it all!
Now in return, can anyone give me the German lyrics to Hor mein lied, Violetta? There are one or two bits I can't quite get.
Thanks!

I think the last lines are:
Bye bye to trouble,
It's gone beyond recall
Over my shoulder goes it all
A wonderful little tune anyhow
