Until I see the first episode of the next Season, I'm going to assume it all had something to do with the window that was open JUST an inch or two below Sherlock on the roof. I originally thought it had been closed at one point during the confrontation, but I went back and checked and it was always open. Still, one window open just a bit seems like a very random detail to put in there - well...to me, in a state of desperation, because hello, no Sherlock for a LONG time. I'm convinced it matters.

Can someone who has watched this episode please tell me why Sherlock stepped down from the edge of the building and said to Morriarty as long as you are alive my friends are safe. I didnt get it. The gunmen were told to kill his friends if he didnt jump. Am I missing some thing?

@timbum1000 I think the idea was that if one of the gunmen (and I'm pretty sure one of them could actually see Moriarty on the roof from his position) were informed by Moriarty that they were not to shoot whoever their respective target was, then the message would be passed on. But that gunman would have to hear it from Moriarty, so I think Sherlock planned to find a way to get Moriarty to call off the shootings, but then Moriarty offed himself and left Sherlock without any options.

I think the fact that the first person that he thinks of is John reinforces the fact that even though he cares about Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and Molly, John is still the one he cares about the most and considers the closest to him. Whether you take that bromantically or romantically, it's still an awesome touch by the writers. :)
