Am I the only one who dislikes that this version is so sped up? Her technique and control is flawless but nobody emotes this song quite like Bernadette. Her version always does it for me.
such a contrast from donna murphy's performance but just as moving. a song that needs no elaborate movements but requires incredible emotion to project the meaning. how incredible is it to move an audience by just standing still and singing....amazing.
I saw Miss Peters perform this last Friday night and I swear to God, I was crying so hard, I thought I would have to be airlifted from the Marquis. Utterly exquisite performance.
Mmm, perfect voice, perfect placement, perfect perfect perfect everything* But in the new revival of FOLLIES Bernadette was able to paint a picture and pull me into what she was feeling... it was more then a performance, and her voice WASN'T perfect, but it was MAGICALLY MOVING!!! We're talking about to different ball games I guess, but yeah this was nice...
Wow! Just when you think this song has nothing left to give, Marin knocks it out of the ballpark. She sings it straight, yet, with a final sigh exposes the false floor of hope through which Sally drops at the very end. With this I forgive you, Marin, for being sick the time I went to see "Ragtime"! ;-)
@gomarie02032ily I saw this last week with Bernadette and I thought she was brilliant. The luxary Marin has here is she gets to perform this out of context. I think here this is Marin Mazzie singing this song. Where in the show, it's SALLY performing and it is gut-wrenching and painful and crazy.
@rachel869 I think she was two of them perfectly. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE her, and practically wet my pants when I saw her in N2N last year, but that Marin singing the song not SALLY and maybe the difference is just nuances, but definitely there.
@nikuman565 Thanks much. Not sure how I missed this one. Watched it lasts night and it was amazing. The ladies of the theatre have such respect for one another - true class. Love the way Marin Mazzie delivered this..so haunting.
What is this from? Is this show available for rent or purchase anywhere. I could not find it though there was a reference to Diva's in Red on Patti Lupones posting.
I saw the current production of Follies at the Marquis. Loved i!. But I wasn't particularly moved by this song by Bernadette Peters. This however has left me in shock. I don't think it can be better done. Superb! Thanks a lot catstaffo.
I am seeing Follies on Wednesday and I did cheat and see Bernadette's version from D.C and comparing that one with this one I have to go with Marin's interpetation. It is is just incredible and I like her take from a stronger person perspective.The orchestra is more sutble on this one compared to Bernadette's version but I have a feeling come Wednesday night I might be changing my mind ;)
The second half of this show features performances by the "Divas In Red" and they are all great but this is the best. Watch the faces of the others in each performance. There is tru respect and admiration from one pro to another.
She aces this song in a way that few people ever have. Wonderful.

@gloriafiona3 From a seat in the audience you wouldn't be able to tell. You can get some of those notes out without making a few weird faces.

GORGEOUS. So full of emotion. Hands down the best version of this song ever rendered. However, I haven't seen Bernadette's yet!
philljcrazy101 8 months ago
@philljcrazy101 Bernadette's is on Youtube now ;)
It's hard to compare. Their renditions are VERY different...Bernadette's is incredibly haunting and painful. Really makes me cry.
I love Mazzie's, as well. Very explosive and filled with wrenching moments.
