I studied in Rothenburg for 3 mos with the Goethe Insitut in September/October 2003 and February 2004. I have not studied since, but can still speak (more or less). Writing is difficult. It's easier to express myself in English for this.
Thank you for this video. I could SMELL the shops and walk from my home to school. It's magnificent. Thank you for the memories!
Well, I am an amateur, and a seven-minute video is bound to be superficial. "Jejune" is probably a word you used to impress me, but it's ambiguous, so I'm not sure if you're accusing me of dullness or ignorance; the former is a matter of opinion, the latter I repudiate. The accent, however, is authentically my own.
I'm leaving near that town and i think it's not so nice as it seems, it's just a little bit too much boring and you are not allowed to drive into the town on sundays, so please visit some more beautiful cities, this one isn't soo nice.
I love Rothenburg. I have visited twice and would love to be able to return again someday. Christmas time is the best time to go! Loved the schneeballen!
@DeBalaguer Thank you for the suggestion about the towns with a similar architecture. I will definitely take your advise and visit Rothenburg and maybe even a few other towns. It is just a matter of time.
It is coincidental that I happened on this post at this time of year two years after i first saw it and I still think you should make travel videos and market the to tourist groups! Merry Christmas and I'm glad to see your success here on Youtube!
Excellent town. I am actually trying to reconstruct a part of it as my N scale railroad design. So far, I have spent nearly $20,000 dollars in 10 years collecting the buildings, Bavarian locks and rail cars. I wish they would make more replicas of different city buildings from Rothenbyrg, so that I don' t have to make them from scratch. I have never been there but I have watched some clips and printed out a lit of pictures. I dream someday to visit the town and see it from a different perspecti

I am surprised that you didn't mention the Kriminalmuseum, a monument to man's inhumanity to man. But you have very well captured the beauty of the city.
the statement, that tourism is rothenburgs main industry is simply wrong. only a third of its business volume is made in tourism.
Yes, you have to walk 'carefully' along the forticications, especailly in the night because I felt down from stairs there lol I agree with some others below that Rotherburg is indeed really lovely old city...the snowball tastes yummy, pretty shops for teddy bears & christmas, and a doll house musium...but I think other german cities are more interesting and beautiful to visit*^-^* Thank you so much for this very informative nice video with subtitle*^-^*
Depends what you look for in a vacation. It's a beautiful old city with some very pleasant countryside around. On the other hand, it's full of American and Japanese tourists, and many things are there "for show", and not really authentic.
You gotta visit Rothenburg to the right times. Certainly, in May we have got countless tourists here, but visit Rothenburg in August or maybe even in September. To explore Rothenburgs real beauty I'd advise you to go on your own.
I live here since I was born, and when I take a walk through the inner town, the "old town", I see somethin new every time =)
But yes, you are right, most of the time Rothenburg is overfilled with tourists. December is the next rush hour ;)
you would have to call a Realtor or in german - Grundstuecks Makler. I wonder though, if you could even do that. You could probably rent a place - if there is one available - year round. I don't know the rules though.
I agree with you. I lived there during my childhood. My father, Rolf Trexler owned the Puppet theater there. It was a great place to be a child . We lived next to the Markus Turm and there used to be a storch's nest up on top.. Luckily, even though there was some damage from the war, all was rebuilt, preserving the charm of this place. Our parents could just turn us loose to roam the town. it's great so see that all I knew is still there - the same way it was then. I loved Pfingsten the most
@Q3o5 We thoroughly enjoyed Rothenburg. I recommend traveling the entire "Romantic Road". Rothenburg is a beautiful city and recommend staying on the west end of town along the wall, so you can overlook the river. Be sure to take the Night Watchman's Tour.
Unfortunately the "Gasthof zum goldenen M" (Inn to the golden M) aka McDonalds closed a few years ago. They had an impressive herald (inn sign) outside.
Just enter "mcdonalds rothenburg" into the Google image search and you can find some pics of it.
Thank god I could find your town. I visited your town when I was 14. I was looking for the town because I didn't remember the name. It was the most beautiful town I've ever seen.
Thanks to your town for remaining me beautiful memory when my life was most exciting.
My wife & I went there several years ago. Loved every inch of it. We walked the wall, climbed the church steeple, visited the Christmas shops (had to drag said wife away to keep our schedule) and ate at a small restaurant near the much photographed fork in the road. We drove down the Romantic Road from there to Neuschwanstain and Bad Tolz. Love Germany! Was stationed there for 31 months in the early 60's. Can't get enough of the castles, beer and brochen.
But one correction, the city was bombed on March 31, 1945 by the USAAF and ca. 40% of the Old Town (the eastern part) was destroyed during that air raid.
But yes the major tourist attractions survived the wars and look the way they looked like centuries ago.
OMG AT 1:06 there is the EXACT SAME hotel that we stayed at when we were there. If you ever go to europe, go to Rothenburg! Great food, good hospitaliy. It's truly an amazing city. It is now my favorite place in the world!!!
Glad I found this, We went there May 2005. There were not as many tourists at that time of the year. As an American I found the glittery red, white and blue cowboy hat and boot x-mas ornaments a little odd though. The deep-fried sweet dough balls seemed very Wisconsin-like. Of course, so does the rest of that part of the country, sans the pick-up trucks.

Yay! I love that town! I spent a night there on a road trip at Christmas and we walked around a big section of the city wall catwalk. You're right that the fortifications are impressive - I remember trying to see how you'd even begin to attack them. They seem to have thought of everything.
