This is a model of the guy who has the valve in his head on Valve's logo. There was an animation using this model at the beginning of the Beta instead the of the current picture of Vavleguy. Probably been said a hundred times.

Just because there are some files that weren't edited until 1998 doesn't mean that Half-Life 2 was started in that year. Maybe they re-used some files from the original Half-Life (which was released in 1998).

'Tis VALVe Man, the original VALVe intro character. It was all a 3d sequence with him working in a steel mill (or something) and turning on a machine that implants a valve into his skull. That was how the VALVe intro was before they "upgraded" to the static image of one of the VALVe workers with a valve in his eye (I think it was better the first way. It's not every day you can see someone implant a valve into their skull)

That video is the test of the GoldSrc (Half-Life 1 engine) capabilities, it was meant to be the introduction to Valve (Game company introduction video).
