When the mandatory "passive restraint" regulation took effect in the USA (around 1988) some interesting things occurred. Expensive cars generally had air bags standard, cheaper cars generally had "automatic belts". The public HATED the automatic belts AND affordable air bag-equipped Chrysler models proved safe AND convenient. By around 1996, the automatic belts were replaced by standard air bags in new cars.
The Chevrolet shown is a 1974, not a 1973. Airbags were offered 74 - 76, not 73 - 74.
The airbags didn't protect the driver and right front passenger. There was a drivers airbag, and another one that would protect center and right passengers. These were true full sized cars with three across front seating.
Oldsmobile was the lead Division. So its not quite right to say Chevrolet was the first airbag car. All airbag equipped cars had Oldsmobile dashboards.
@samuelli117 dude seatbelts kill just as much as not wearing one. you ever heard of being stuck in a seatbelt cause of an accident, that sucks, plus it could also choke the living shit out of ya when you tighten it, ever think about that
Back and the 50's and 60's safety did NOT sell. Now it does. My wife's mini van has ABS, side airbags, stablity control (ESP). None of it was required by law.
Seatbelt laws are pointless. If you're dumb enough to not wear a seatbelt, then you probably are too dumb to pass on your genes. This is what we call natural selection. Of course I'll always wear one.
