@cmorgan22 fyi-Met cast recently changed as Ms. Marambio withdrew. Sondra Radvanovsky sings Lina Jan. 11,14 plus 30th(Sat. broadcast). Julianna Di Giacomo sings the other 3 Lina's. Two Amercian gals came to the rescue! Mr. Cura stays in the title role.
The only Stiffelio I've ever seen is the MET production with Domingo. But in my opinion Carreras(whom I edited out of my 3 tenors recordings because I so disliked his singing)is wonderful here, eclipsing Domingo. He is also my all time favorite Don Jose in Carman. where he was phenomanal.
He did more Bel Canto work in his early years than people think -- including his Rossini Otello. I give this clip the highest rating!
Reply to cmorgan's comment - just had to thank you for your honesty and for giving Carreras another try! Many folks only judge him by his performance with the 3 Tenors. I am learning, myself, to give singers several tries, listening to several performances and not just one or two.
I find Carreras pretty embarrassing here. The entire video is in fact painful to watch, and I wanted to watch it cause I liked his studio recording from years earlier. He just didn't have the vocal chops to take this on at this stage in his career. He has never been much of a visual actor either, but that wouldn't matter to me if his voice was better here.
Stifelio is one of the most difficult tenor roles. Very many great tenors are ending their carreers without dearing to perform it. But Jose Carreras is absolutly uncompareble, not only like a singer, but as an actor too. What about his voce, he reminds me greatest trumphet tenors of past, by covering whole chior and orchestra with his high metal ring tones!!!
He's great, but in my opinion is not his referencial stiffelio...he sounds kinda tired and the voice is grasping a bit...his Stiffelio recording with sylvia Sass on Phillips is superbe!
Carreras and Malfitano always singing to the floor...Yurasich looks like Rush Limbaugh...good singing, though.

In fact he's better than domingo in some roles, and otherwise.
