The Taliban were the Mujahideen. The Mujahideen were the rebels supported by NATO who were waging war against the USSR. Hence, NATO actively supplied the Taliban with logistics and training.

I've seen enough documentaries and read enough news articles to postulate that there will always be Afghans who dislike us. They may not dislike the individual people in uniforms, but they sure as hell don't like a breach of their land.

Withdrawing troops does not necessarily mean abandoning the cause. Instead, why not send in more social workers and skilled professionals to get Afghanistan back on its feet... instead of making us look like thugs.
We all pay taxes here in Canada, a lot of them. It's depressing how little of each dollar we can actually put towards our baskets of goods. In addition to regressive sales tax, each year we get the opportunity to voluntarily and enthousiastically pay our income taxes. Why do our income tax returns not give us the option of opting out of services we go not want or dissagree with?

I must say the analogy between WWII and the conflict in Afghanistan is quite a leap. The Nazis in WWII had killed millions of innocent people, and were continuing to kill more. I have no doubt that staying in Afghanistan until it's 'fixed' is a good idea. If we bring our troops back to Canada I don't want to see one of our soldiers deployed anywhere else int he world, they will only be used for defense. Our soldiers are NOT construction workers, nor good-will diplomats, nor road-builders, nor ambassadors nor anything else but combat. The Taliban were the Mujahideen. The Mujahideen were the rebels supported by NATO who were waging war against the USSR. Hence, NATO actively supplied the Taliban with logistics and training.

I must say the analogy between WWII and the conflict in Afghanistan is quite a leap. The Nazis in WWII had killed millions of innocent people, and were continuing to kill more. I have no doubt that staying in Afghanistan until it's 'fixed' is a good idea. What Layton is probably trying to say is merely that we should try to complete this 'mission' by such a time as 2011 or whatever it may be. Otherwise my opinion of the man is decreased.

Im fine with us staying in Afghanistan. Its pretty much our moral responsibility. But we need to restructure the mission.
We need to put more emphasis on rebuilding the infrastructure, giving Afghan generals more say. And we absolutely have to end the recent Iraq/ vietnam style night time raids that have gone on in recent months.

I am deeply ambivalent about this whole war and what it can realistically achieve. I would be trying to distance ourselves from the US economy as much as possible. From what I've been reading, the US is soon to be investigated by the IMF and possibly forced into some rather painful reforms. Their system is falling apart and it is in bad need of repair.

My friend, I agree that the Libertarian Party is a marvellous party to vote for, however, due to the impossibility of the Libertarian Party to actually win an election, I believe that voting for the Conservatives is the best alternative. Germany would not have been able to overcome the manpower barrel of the British Empire. For example, we in Canada sent 600,000 soldiers out of a population of only 7 million people and we also gave munitions to the Brits. Anyways, that was the year in which Britain had the most territory BEFORE occupying middle east to keep the peace. The Turks were terrible soldiers and wee only decent on the defence.

In 1916 Britain had the most powerful navy in the world and had a policy that they must be ready to fight against the world's 2 runner-up navies at once. They were king of the waves. Plus many of the bases they controlled would allow more superiority, take for example Malta, Ceylon, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands Ceylon, India, South Africa, Jamaica, Bermuda Island, Vancouver Island, Pacific Islands. Seems they were prepared logitically as well.
