White girls who are over 20 just can't pull off the cutsy look, why did Tsu even make this group? Some of them can not even speak fluent Japanese! Ugggg
@YesIm10 If you look closely, like at 2 seconds, you can see the 'L' at the end of "FUNDAMENTAL." It is just that the top part sort of wore off or faded, making it hard to see. Some of the other letters in "FUNDAMENTAL," like the "D" and the "E" have the same issue.
@TexMurphy01 if u watch alot of morning musume dance videos you'll notice that in the year 2000 and even after that they still played 90's music. i dont think it shifted into a new sound until 2003 or mabye 2004 (not sure when)
All this talk about virginity ... The only problem I have is the unrealistic restrictions on these healthy teen girls, isolating them from any male contact whatsover. Appoint chaperones and monitor them so there is no carousing ok ... even send the chaperones out with them on picnics and contacts with boys ... but the total isolation is draconian ... and not applied to boy idols.
Yay! lol I don't like her much either, no actually! Her and April were originally in Coconuts, but they left after I think the second single. But they all sing in Japanese and English! :)
this is definitely one of their better songs (ahaha, that's saying something.) despite that danielle was kind of an awkward-looking teenager, she might've been the best singer in the group. her pronunciation is much better than lehua's
Umm, I don't like this, really, the fact that like two of the members didn't even speak japanese is kind of disturbing when I see their videos o.o Plus, I can hear that their japanese isn't good and that ruins the whole song for me...
it's okay. It's a general opinion that Coconuts Masume was pretty bad. They tried, though... they tried. Interesting concept, but very poor execution. I know they wanted the whole "They're Hawaiian!" thing.. but choosing group members with no real knowledge of Japan or it's language and trying to make them superstars was just a bad bad bad idea. Two of them left around like the 1 year mark because they just couldn't adjust.
ok if this is how they make an american version of H!P then I'm definantly going to drag michi to Japan. Forget this crap.
No offence to those who like it. It's just that all the other H!P groups have amazing and catchy songs and beautiful or atleast more thought out videos that didn't look look like it took 10 minutes to build everything and record.
This wasn't meant to be an "American version of H!P". A group like H!P would never work in America because they aren't busty and slutty enough.
This was meant to be foreign (American) girls imported to Japan for a Japanese audience. And the quality of their videos and song were exactly the same as the other 4 H!P groups at the time.
The money groups like this made on a small budget are what allowed BK and C-Ute to be so glamorus and flashy.
Please, the reason H!P wouldn't work in America is because most American's would be creeped out by the groups strange obsession with virginity and fetishized cuteness.
It sucks that American popstars have to whore it up to get noticed, but it sucks just as much that J-idols have to act like permanent 12 year olds if they don't want to get fired. I mean, these girls get the axe if they so much as hint at having a boyfriend, and it's all because that destroys their image as virgin sex objects.
The obsession with virginity came primarily from the obsessive fans who ended up becoming the main income stream of the company once everyone else moved on.
Nakazawa Yuko, the original leader, never professed to being a virgin and some of the original H!P groups has members seriously dating or even married with kids.
And the current line-up of MM got a pretty decent turn out for a nonEnglish pop group when they went to LA.
And is "fetishized cuteness" worse than "Birthday Sex" being #1?
"And is "fetishized cuteness" worse than "Birthday Sex" being #1?"
No, I'd say they're about equal.
It is interesting to learn that the original H!P group wasn't so focused on "purity" and all that though. Like you said, it's the obsessive fans who drive that kind of image to it's current level of creepiness.
sooo... why has virginity and innocence become creepy? i love H!P because of their image. it's a lot better than the sluts and whores we have over here. whats wrong with an innocent idol?? Or would u want ur kid to be disease-infested slut by the time she's 10? H!P is doing right by their society with this image. and i highly doubt americans would find it creepy. most of us on youtube, anyway, find it cute. i for one find it refreshing to see a vid without feelin like im watching a porno
What's creepy is the fetishized virginity propagated by idol groups like H!P These groups don't promote "purity" because it's wholesome and good and prevents STDs. They do it because a large chunk of their fanbase likes to fantasize about having sex with the idols, and it turns that group off when they find out their dream girls actually have love lives of their own. Those fans only want girls who are perceived as "available" and naive.
If the girls are seen as pure virgins, the perverted segment of fans deludes themselves into thinking they'll have a chance to be the first ones to have sex with one of those girls. These fans have such low self esteem that they believe the only girls who would want to have sex with them are the innocent, naive ones who don't know any better. It's demeaning to the group members and it's demeaning to women in general.
My point is that this fetishized type of purity is no less disturbing and disgusting than the hyper-sexual popstars we have in the US. In terms of creepiness, they're both about the same. Japanese people are just as perverted and sex crazed as Americans, they just express it differently.
ok im done. have u ever actually been to japan? nevermind...it doesnt matter. But typically when a person wastes so much time and so many words on conspiracies, its mostly just because they wanna argue. and you havent changed my opinion at all, and im proble not gonna change urs....so im done arguing with u.
u kno wat...i finally get it...ok so on the average everyday japan, men prefer whores to virgins. ive heard many men say "i wont do wit someone unless shes as good as me" and by that they mean they want the girl to have had just as many partners as they've had.
when u said that the obsession with virginity is equal to the obsession with sex in our country...technically thats true...but its not cultural difference...its the fact that, virgin or slut, women(especially famous women) will be sought after as a sex objects....its just the way it is no matter what country your in.... H!P created that image for the girls because they want to convey the message of pure and innocent love...
but this whole thing started with you saying that americans would be creeped out by the groups obsession with virginity...then it wasnt the group, it was the fans, but really, america seems to have fallen in love with miley cyrus and the jonas brothers when they love to talk about how virginity is the best way to go. so just because you're creeped out by virginity does not mean the rest of the country would be...especially since japan loves H!P and their sexual habbits are a lot worse than ours.
As far as the private message. You must be real stupid. Or a fool. Notice it was a reply. To YOUR ORIGINAL PRIVATE MESSAGE. I will post it. If you like. So everyone has your email...Jeez
i deleted it. Becaus I found my fight with you. No need getting anyone else upset. So the Vietnamese people don't count. Why? You think them below you? Funny by saying don't count them. You have given the proof. As far as the girls. Watch the tv show. When they first get to japan. Ask yourself why did April and Chelsea quite so quickly during the mini tour. Then look them up. Ask them why! If you do not know who they are. Then just stop typing. Goto bed. As for my Japanese sorry, I try!
They don't count because the discussion here is about the Coconuts Musume themselves, and not what you're trying to insinuate as a general picture of the situation of the foreigners in Japan.
And you know who they are? LOL
And god...you're 38 and you argue like a 12 year old. Even worse, your logic makes no sense with strange grammar. Perhaps you should work on that before you attempt Jpn.
I never sent you a private message. It was a reply on here. Perhaps that's how Youtube works.
I think that SoCal might be on the mark about the situation for foreigners. You see, my mom grew up on Oahu (where Coconuts Musume is from). 95% of the people there are Japanese and all the signs are translated into Japanese. Growing up, my mom got some crap for being caucasion.
Okay, it was enough crap for her to not even want to hear any of my japanese music.
Her last day of school every year was called "Kill haoli day" ("haoli" means caucasion in Hawaiian), and my mom dreaded it.
I think it's even more hilarious that you deleted your original comment.
First of all, Japanese ppl were not one time Chinese. And WTF with the random Jpn that makes no sense. These girls did NOT speak Japanese (besides Mika/Ayaka). OF COURSE they would face difficulties in Japan. Please offer concrete evidence that they were discriminated against please. And I don't mean all these "Vietnamese" people you want to use as examples.
As far as your human rites. China vs Japan....Japan wins hands down... But tell that to the "Gaikokujin" or " Gaijin!
The vietnamese or the koreans that live there. Ask them how there treated? Or just look at the comments here. "those white girls" "dirty" "they don't speak japanese."
You prove it yourselves. I'll close with this. "To look at others, Is to look at oneself" In other words..At one time the japanese people where chinese. and so on! あなたも
How do I respond to this none sarcastic..Comment? Well, I'll begin with saying..You did not, mention any contradictive argument. Against me! Only How dare you bring china into this! I must assume, since you took the trouble to write that. And yet never confronted my other comments. YOU MUST AGREE!!
Not necessarily. I wouldn't say that the rest of the H!P girls have low self-esteem, do they? They all seem to have confidence -- maybe they seem more naive, but they're confident.
The biggest problem with Coconuts Musume is that they are lacking the nieve factor that many young female idols have, such as Koharu Kusumi, Mano Erina, W, C-ute (etc).
I also think that they appear too confident. If you watch 'Fruits Basket', you will know what I mean. Tohru's cuteness is influenced greatly by her lack of confidence.
It's not their race .... it is their personalities. And I agree with the person that said they look larger in the camera than the Japanese girls.
Eh, that's probably part of it. Koharu Kusumi is the best example, because watching audition stuff, and when she first joined, she was SO nervous.
Still, I think Coconuts Musume's main issue with not getting off the ground was the members. They left QUICKLY, because of not being able to adjust in the US. It's hard to keep trying to replace people, so I think they just gave up.
u have to give the Danielle and Lehua credit for actually being able to remember the words to the sould song, during the song's playbacks. At least they were trying their best to master the songs. At least they are pretty smart and talented in this sense. Anyway, if Lehua could speak Japanese she could easily be mistaken for a Eurasian living in Japan.
At around 0:56, Lehua pronounces 'suru kara' like with an 'l' sound. I think that the 'r' in Japanese (romaji) isn't actually an 'r', but nor is it an 'l'. It's kind of half way in between. It kind of sounds weird to pronouce it either 'l' or 'r'. Still, she isn't Japanese so I don't blame her. It's quite a tricky sound to master.
It's probably a problem about...where is the person comind from. like, for me, the "L" or "R" thing was so easy + It remindes of the spanish or mexican "R". for some people it can be one of the easiest letters. (BTW, the english "TH" is really hard for me, and I think it's harder for japanese more then the japanese "R" for americans.
The thing thats great about jpop groups is when they're young they are VERY KAWAII!!! and as they grow older they become very beautiful women but western girls just cant pull off 'cute' and because they cant speak Japanese their singing is effected a huge amount!
i dont mind non-japanese being in a jpop group as long as they learn to speak the language and stuff also its just the white girls seem so much larger than the japanese ones the cute thing doesnt work out
Which is why I hate the band, for the reasons you've said. It looks odd, and they didn't even bother to speak Japanese. I'm doing well after 7 months of studying, and feel this time next year I'll be able to have conversations (not properly, but can get my messages across).
I'm glad you like Mika and Ayaka, but Chelsea and Lehua were expected to not learn the language. It wasn't laziness; it was an effective method of dodging further stress.
About the band as a whole...I think they're amazing. Their voices are all different, and all their solos are really good. Plus, their songs are great. I can't yell at you for disagreeing with me, but please don't HATE them, especially when you said that two of the band members were awesome. Fair enough?
I have nothing against them because I know they tried but.. taking non-japanese speaking girls, and using them to create a Japanese pop group... just seems stupid to me. I don't mind some of their songs but this one I particularly hate, and they are so out of time with each other!
If more time had being invested into them they could have being alot better. It wasn't something the Japanese market responded to though, and I can't blame them.
Antithesis: BoA, if you consider her music pop, which it is (usually). Hope you know she's Korean, and whether you like her or not, she isn't awkward. And about Sonim, JunJun, and LinLin???
Oh man, I forgot how annoying it is when white girls try to act like Japanese girls.
Don't get me wrong, I love Coconuts Musume....it's just that white girls can't (I'm white btw) make those dramatic/cute/sugary faces without looking like idiots. ^^;
Ayaka Japanese, Mika is half Japanese, Danielle is pure American, and Lehua is pure American too. They were discovered in Hawaii By tsunku thats probably why :)
i know, that gets on my nerves so much X) because they all have such good voices! and then they just sing sorta odd songs i guess. i dont really know what word to use but yeah =P

In America we prize high self-esteem but it's very hard to be cute, innocent and nieve and have high self-esteem.
lovelybugz 3 years ago
Not necessarily. I wouldn't say that the rest of the H!P girls have low self-esteem, do they? They all seem to have confidence -- maybe they seem more naive, but they're confident.
SprinkleCakezzz 3 years ago
The biggest problem with Coconuts Musume is that they are lacking the nieve factor that many young female idols have, such as Koharu Kusumi, Mano Erina, W, C-ute (etc).
I also think that they appear too confident. If you watch 'Fruits Basket', you will know what I mean. Tohru's cuteness is influenced greatly by her lack of confidence.
It's not their race .... it is their personalities. And I agree with the person that said they look larger in the camera than the Japanese girls.
lovelybugz 3 years ago
Eh, that's probably part of it. Koharu Kusumi is the best example, because watching audition stuff, and when she first joined, she was SO nervous.
Still, I think Coconuts Musume's main issue with not getting off the ground was the members. They left QUICKLY, because of not being able to adjust in the US. It's hard to keep trying to replace people, so I think they just gave up.
writerserenyty 2 years ago 2
Actually, Coconuts Musume did pretty well with it's Japanese fans. It failed miserably with the western fans though.
Iantheparty 2 years ago
Yeah it did pretty well...with its mere thousands of copies of singles sold.
tethevo 2 years ago
The added up total of their singles sales in the first week alone 18,360. And that's just first week sales.

u have to give the Danielle and Lehua credit for actually being able to remember the words to the sould song, during the song's playbacks. At least they were trying their best to master the songs. At least they are pretty smart and talented in this sense. Anyway, if Lehua could speak Japanese she could easily be mistaken for a Eurasian living in Japan.
freeloaner85 3 years ago 9
wtf...what are those non-japanese?! they were born in Japan or something?
Ryodoudou 3 years ago
no i think 3 of them are from hawaii an 1 is from japan, who is the leader

Anyone got the MP3 of this?
DjSchrotty 3 years ago
At around 0:56, Lehua pronounces 'suru kara' like with an 'l' sound. I think that the 'r' in Japanese (romaji) isn't actually an 'r', but nor is it an 'l'. It's kind of half way in between. It kind of sounds weird to pronouce it either 'l' or 'r'. Still, she isn't Japanese so I don't blame her. It's quite a tricky sound to master.
0800Hanabi 3 years ago 3
It depends on the dialect also . I think she pronounced it fine
littoaznmonkey 3 years ago 2
It's probably a problem about...where is the person comind from. like, for me, the "L" or "R" thing was so easy + It remindes of the spanish or mexican "R". for some people it can be one of the easiest letters. (BTW, the english "TH" is really hard for me, and I think it's harder for japanese more then the japanese "R" for americans.

Kind of scary... Danielle and the other Amrican girl just look really scary trying to act cute. It's just not them...

The thing thats great about jpop groups is when they're young they are VERY KAWAII!!! and as they grow older they become very beautiful women but western girls just cant pull off 'cute' and because they cant speak Japanese their singing is effected a huge amount!

i dont mind non-japanese being in a jpop group as long as they learn to speak the language and stuff also its just the white girls seem so much larger than the japanese ones the cute thing doesnt work out
pieisyummi 3 years ago
Which is why I hate the band, for the reasons you've said. It looks odd, and they didn't even bother to speak Japanese. I'm doing well after 7 months of studying, and feel this time next year I'll be able to have conversations (not properly, but can get my messages across).
The hawaiin girls had THREE YEARS. Laziness.
Ayaka and Mika are amazing though :)
matterssw99 3 years ago
I'm glad you like Mika and Ayaka, but Chelsea and Lehua were expected to not learn the language. It wasn't laziness; it was an effective method of dodging further stress.
About the band as a whole...I think they're amazing. Their voices are all different, and all their solos are really good. Plus, their songs are great. I can't yell at you for disagreeing with me, but please don't HATE them, especially when you said that two of the band members were awesome. Fair enough?

@pieisyummi im sorry im not saying this was a mean comment but did you mean fat or what cause i dont get your comment
lila611angel 1 year ago
I have nothing against them because I know they tried but.. taking non-japanese speaking girls, and using them to create a Japanese pop group... just seems stupid to me. I don't mind some of their songs but this one I particularly hate, and they are so out of time with each other!
If more time had being invested into them they could have being alot better. It wasn't something the Japanese market responded to though, and I can't blame them.

I love Coconuts Musume, because of Mika. I think Mika's amazing. I'd quite like to be like her, minus the singing part. =PP
She did better in Mini Moni, mind - but she still made Coconuts Musume great. =]

I don't think non-Japanese people should be in j-pop bands. It looks so...well, awkward. Ayaka is the only one that looks like she belongs.

i agree. it's obvious that japanese bands should have only japanese people!

Antithesis: BoA, if you consider her music pop, which it is (usually). Hope you know she's Korean, and whether you like her or not, she isn't awkward. And about Sonim, JunJun, and LinLin???
OctopussInPants10min 3 years ago 2
I would call that a combination of xenophobia and racism.
mishydishy 3 years ago 4
Hawaiians are Americans but they have their own culture.
I wouldn't classify them under the typical "American" culture.

the suck i dont like them

Oh man, I forgot how annoying it is when white girls try to act like Japanese girls.
Don't get me wrong, I love Coconuts Musume....it's just that white girls can't (I'm white btw) make those dramatic/cute/sugary faces without looking like idiots. ^^;
