  • MINDBENDING ? I have nothing against Zappa, but this solo is just crap, sorry !

  • I'm a Zappa fan, but this embarrasses me.

Sure they cram more notes into the old song than the Allman Brothers Band did, but there is no soul, no pain.

Zappas tounge in cheek humor and amazing talent failed this time.

  • Zappa rules! Best cover ever of this un-coverable song!

  • Guess Zappa ate his own words about the Allman Brothers' music. Zappa once said that the Allman Brothers was the only band that became "camp" in their own time.

  • Honey Badger Zappa,, he don't care.

  • This is an incredible Gibson

  • Why all the hate? We have two masters in Frank Zappa and Duane Allman. What is interesting is that Frank Zappa chose to cover this song faithfully and without irony. Of course no one can play that lead harmony like Duane. Eric Clapton dabbled with Duane too but ultimately even he was not Duane either and moved on. I really like this song and I like Frank Zappa covering it here. Frank is explaining that Duane is not that different than prog rock and he the respects the song and its emotion. Duhh.

  • He sure as hell was NO DUANE BY GOD ALLMAN was he?

  • Duane would roll over in his grave if he saw this mess of shit

  • @xXxDriftingCowboyxXx

had he lived and experienced life from the day he died to today, I don't know if I agree w/ you. Maybe you knew the person and aren't talking out of your ass.

  • @AlexJamesOliver Talking out of my ass?!? Have you even listened to any Allman Bros music or any of Duane's session work? Zappa's solo here is equivalent to a seagull being beaten with a bagpipe. Sorry if I offended the Frank fans out there but this cover doesn't even remotely do justice to Skydog.

  • With Steve Via ,cool.

  • Vaiがいた!

  • yeah, it's from the first Allman Brothers Band album called "The Allman Brothers Band", check it out... it's a wonderfull band

  • I like the original better, Allman brothers foreffer

    Cor

    from the Netherlands

  • A long-time Zappa fan; I saw him in 1971, Tea Party, Boston; 1975, Music Hall, Boston, saw both shows, the first rock, the second more jazz-like; and lastly and sadly in 1988, Boston, Orpheum Theatre, one of his very last public performances, he was sick and skipped most of the U.S. I have to agree with navigator3744 on FZ's tone. ALMOST annoying. Wished he used WARMER tones at times, but I have no major beef except that he had security confiscate the film from my crummy little camera in '88!!!

  • O. My. God. i have been tied. As close as this is to the Allmans' (and i think it's a measure of FZ's respect in that), it tells a different and more painful story. Frankly Masterful.

  • Was that Matt "guitar" Murphy?

  • @pattheiceman Steve Via

  • Could anybody tell me who's the singer?

    Thx

  • @AllenSparrowIverson

Well it`s Robert "Bobby" Martin: Multi instrumentalist and vocalist joined The Mothers in the summer of 1981.

  • this is an interesting take on the song and its pretty nice, at least it shows they appreciate the allman brothers, and good on zappa for trying this, its a pretty hard song 2 play live especially with all the twin melodic guitar and how it opens up in 11/4 time

  • Is it just the lighting or does the singer have half a mustache?

  • They fucked the song...What a mss to listen to these faggots..

  • The tone of his guitar is too shrill .... almost annoying at times, really detracts from the solo.

  • @navigator3744 Pretty sure it's the recording. The cymbals are also far too bright, but they're quieter, so it's less noticeable. Dunno if the original audio was bad or if this was just ripped from a bad VCR or something. Still, I've been to plenty of live concerts that sound worse due to bad acoustics...

  • Good lord........!!!!!!!!

  • awesome, what a vocal!!!!!!!!!!!!! huge. x x

  • such a blessing to listen to this

  • "Vipping Post!!!"

  • Whoa 5:39

  • I remember seeing this performance on USA's Night Flight when they reran the Zappa MTV Halloween special that this was from. Too bad this wasn't on the "Torture Never Stops" DVD!

  • "Judging from the way you sang it,

it must be a John Cage composition, right?"

    ;)

  • "I will get a person

    and tie him up

    to the whipping post

and beat the living shit out of him so the guy in the audience will be satisfied"

  • No bro, that's an Allman Brothers tune. The earliest I ever heard them play it was 1970.

  • @hakkerxxx Being a moron doesn't come with much recommendation either.

  • humor die ondertiteling...

    vpro door de bocht?

    what a voice, mr B. Martin !!

  • seeing dweezil zappa playing zappa's back catalogue tomorrow night :D

  • Was that Steve Vai next to him?

  • yeah it is

  • Thanks for the confirmation.

  • no problem :)

  • why are there dutch subtitles

  • thanks for posting. frank was such a god damn genious, ill never understand it.

  • Great cover!

  • Yeah, I'd say this is the ultimate Zappa version of this song. The solo is MINDBENDING. Thanks for posting!

  • @deadbeatdynamo check out the 7 09 minutes version...i think it is a bit better...just my opinion

  • GREAT VERSION!
