if anyone has cared to look this up further, Dolly eventually died at the age of 6 years old, with signs of old age. Her species usually live to 12 years old, meaning Dolly die prematurely. This is probably linked to epigenetics effects, where certain key developmental stages are skipped due to cloning

@skyarsalan if the discovery means medical breakthroughs, I personally won't mind sacrificing animals for the benefit of humans. If you don't like it, then next time you get sick, don't bother taking any pharmaceutical drugs, because all those drugs are tested on animals. Or better yet, tell a diabetic person not to take insulin, because insulin was discovered by tying off pancreatic ducts in dogs, which is cruel, right?

Yes, I do see the point were they would do it less if people refused the medicine, but that is not going to happen on a real world situation. @steo2008 As Svante Paablo could tell you, that might be possible, but very difficult. When an organism dies, there's nothing to maintain their DNA, so it unravels and denatures. You might still be able to find fragments of DNA which could offer clues to the organism's genetic code, but putting those fragments back into a working genome would be extremely difficult. Plus, in fossils there's no DNA whasoever remaining, so you'd need to use one of the rare natural mummies.
