In Europe the price of Avgas will enforce the use of Jet A1 as the only way forward for piston powered GA. The only long term solution will be ONE product, ONE supply chain - and that is Jet A1. I firmly believe biofuel, Mogas, ethanol etc are short term blindroads. It will be too complicated.
Get going Delta Hawk. My Arrow III will get a new engine as soon as You have the 200 hp version certified. And that is in Europe.
Their original goal was to price the engine at around $30,000 - they missed that goal by 100%. I noticed in their comparisons table that they added every conceivable option to the Lycoming engine to make it appear more expensive. Let's remember the turbo is an option for the Lycoming, it's a necessity for the Deltahawk. I still think it's a fine engine but it's just become an investors moneypit. Still, it kept some people employed for ten years, so maybe that is the actual goal.
@PDZ1122 Turbos are way more cheaper for a diesel engine. And way more reliable. For the simple reason that the exhaust is way cooler. Hence the cost of the turbo goes down considerably.
Pity they missed their target price by about 100% - they now want $over $60,000 for one engine. Not to disparage their efforts - two stroke Diesels are the way to go - but if a business misses its price mark by that much....??
@ptairco it's a little steep for an unproven engine, but considering high-end lycoming and continental engines fetch prices ~20k MORE than this, I wouldn't say they missed it by 100%.
For some people the range factor is invaluable, which could justify the cost differential. The range of the diesel Diamonds is incredible. Testing it on a Velocity is perfect, since they can achieve high cruise speeds through aerodynamics rather than power, while sipping fuel.
Maybe Deltahawk engine is the most promising aviation diesel today, after Thielert's bankruptcy. It is based on a simple and reliable consept. I wish it takes the certification soon and start being commercially available.
