Canadian version. I cut off my left thumb, index & ring finger in a table saw accident. I was in surgery less than 6 hours later (they needed to allow my stomach to be empty). After 12 hours in surgery, I came out with 4 1/2 digits - my thumb is missing its knuckle, but I still have a thumbnail. NO COST to me. My brother in the states tells me my surgery there would have cost me 100 grand or more - and I probably would have lost at LEAST 1 finger in the process.

Canadian version #2: Sunday, a friend cut 2 fingertips. The hospital was understaffed, so they called in a surgeon. When that surgeon arrived, a car accident victim had been admitted, so my friend was bumped. On Monday morning, they said go home and wait till Thurs because they were too busy. After some complaining on Tues, they asked him to come in 8am Wed. They squeezed him in, by 9pm and were no longer able to reattach one of the fingers. OHIP(Toronto)=free, but you get what you pay for.

Here in Mexico we have FREE (that's right, free) healt care insurance, paid by workers taxes. If you work, you and your wife and children have this insurance. If you get sick, you go to the doctor, you get fixed, and you don't pay anything. For real

If America doesnt improve its health care system now, the best solution for these people is to travel to other countries for such surgeries. Im sure it will cost them much lesser including the airfare, hotel stay, surgery or any other cost involved for travel. In any part of the world, S12,000 is a huge amount for this kind of finger surgery. And in $60,000, several open heart surgeries could be performed in the best hospitals of Pakistan.

His case is even more tragic if you remember that, for example, Canadians spend only half as much per person as Americans do for the priviledges of their health care system. I watched the full movie & honestly the health care system looks like from some stone age culture centuries ago. It's a shock to know that this is America.
