I would argue the flankers do provide 'driving force' in the scrum, they are very important. Not only do they help hold the props back if using the 'hang' before the engage, they also help drive the props inwards and forwards.
very nice. Where do the locks position themselves in the scrum. I see the props and hookers are the front 3 in he middle. Are the locks the ones on the sides or behind the props?
@bellyflop55 Locks go behind the props/hooker in a scrum. Used to play as the left side lock when I played a few years back.
Main downsides are a) getting the "pleasure" of having your head between two ugly, large front row arses in a scrum and b) praying your front row are strong enough to keep you elevated in a line out as the locks are normally the ones you see launched into the air to catch the ball, and trust me, a 5 foot crash down to earth when your props lets go hurts like holy hell.

I'm a flanker, 2nd row, number 8.. and fastest man on the team :S I'm 6ft and way around 13 stone should I try playing as a back for a bit ? :S
