  • The practice of floating is more about timing. Theres no magic shifting system on a tractor trailer that makes it any better. The biggest differemce is gear ratios and timing. Diesels have a shorter rev range which helps to make it easier to match, even in this case. Gasoline engines are trickier. The thing that damages is when you are doing it right. Slipping the clutch takes the load off of the trans from the crank. Otherwise, nothing different happens inside your trans.

  • Don't like country music, but I so wanna drive one of those

  • it would be better on clutch as the clutch is not slipping creating friction which wears it down

  • Yeah ur trans isn't gonna last long.

  • @griz4020 what do you consider not long?

  • @hammerdwn20 Floating the gears on your truck like that is extremely hard on your clutch and trans which will severely shorten the life on it.

  • @griz4020 you can shift these like big rigs bud way better on tranny stay of the clutch as much as you can

  • @johnnyjoezcat these tranny's aren't set up like a semi. Semi's don't have synchronizers as these tranny's do. You engage the clutch to synchronize the gears, shift, and disengage the clutch and take your foot completely off of it. If you don't, you'll wear out the shift rails prematurely.

  • AH! I can't wait to swap my Jeep ZJ's auto to a standard! also, what is wrong with floating (not using the clutch)

  • what is float shifting?

  • @elitecssplayer no clutch, just using the RPMs to shift. its fun but not so good for the truck

  • @jcolcord5 : why not so good, it is good for big rigs. what about a light jeep?

  • @elitecssplayer big rigs are different, and i burnt the clutch out on my jeep from not using the clutch all the time

  • @jcolcord5 : how long did it take and is that the only damage it does is burn the clutch?

  • @jcolcord5 no you didnt. The clutch linings only wear when you slip it. floating gears will NOT wear the clutch. Transmission wear is a different story.

  • @hammerdwn20 well idfk what i did to the clutch on my jeep then lol.

  • Gayyyy what a waste of nearly 2 minutes. Then the waste of me feeling obligated to comment on this shit vid

  • love the "Highway"

  • I heard from my transmission builder (he has 30+yrs exp) that the G56 is a weak trans. It is a med duty trans at best. It was dodges cheap replacement for the NV5600. Now they don't even make parts for the NV5600. Anybody else heard anything good or bad about the G56?

  • Fuck you cant hear the piece of shit for the shitty music.

  • The music is the best part. God bless America.

  • fk i love country but if i listen to it where i live ill get car jacked and beat up lmao

  • I'm a country boy. I listen to country music all the time.

  • what is floating?

  • @sillymonsterfromthe4 Shifting gears without the clutch. It's a quick and easy way to destroy your tranmission's synchros

  • @mannwhosoldtheworld not if its perfect timing though right? that's how semi's operate without burning up their clutch correct?

  • @sillymonsterfromthe4 Semi trucks don't have "Synchronizers". Shifting without the clutch doesn't wear the clutch, be it semi or car/pick-up. Semi trucks don't have synchronizors, so if you don't match the RPM you just grind (or destroy your U-joints if you try to force it in). Technically semi drivers are supposed to double clutch. Anyways, if you float gears in a car/pick-up you burn the synchros, and once those are gone you can't shift with, or without the clutch.

  • @mannwhosoldtheworld i meant burn up the clutch by using it so often when shifting in motion on semis haha not by shifting itself, and thanks for the info :) so even when the rpm is matched perfectly in a smaller vehicle youll still burnout your syncros?

  • @sillymonsterfromthe4 Theoretically, no. In reality, I think you miss the gear slightly more often then not. At my old job we had Sterling 10 ton trucks with 7 speed fully synchronized transmissions. The drivers never used the clutch because they were lazy, and by 200,000 kms (which isn't much for a big truck), shifting was a pain with or without the clutch. You basically just slammed it in as hard as you could. One of the trucks was driven by this old guy who always used the clutch, and his was

  • @sillymonsterfromthe4 Sorry, second part of the comments. The old guy drove the same kind of truck as the others, but his transmission was perfectly fine because he actually used the clutch for every shift.

As for double-clutching with a non-synchro transmission, you definitely wear the clutch faster, and if you don't grind gears, you won't hurt the tranny. As far as I'm concerned I'd rather a driver did NOT use the clutch in my non-synchronized trucks.

  • @mannwhosoldtheworld cool, we run a bunch of old cab over internationals and those non synchro dual range trannies are just smooth as silk when you know what your doing :) that special od ratio helps alot too

  • @sillymonsterfromthe4 Yup my Pete has an 18, took me a couple weeks when I first got it to learn how to split gears smoothly, but now it's like a hot knife through butter ;D

  • @mannwhosoldtheworld maybe one day we will reach lightsaver through butter status hahah

  • Sally !! you got to slow that mustang down.

  • Are you Techincally just rev matching it with the clutch and transmission???

  • @josh666675 He's revmatching without the clutch

  • wtf is floating gears? was there any real point to this video? other than someone listening to some shit american music while driving his truck?

  • @seannz100 Floating gears is shifting without the clutch.

  • @mmiller1188 ahh thanks for the reply

  • @seannz100 wow you must be some dumb city gangster, go listen to some more hip hop you faggot..

  • @rockstardrinker95 no im not a faggot, and the music was shit

  • @seannz100 well to be honest if you grew up in the country you wud understand why he is listen to country music because what do you expect out of a country boy, and floating gears isnt sumthin u do over night it takes practice especially in a pickup i had to practice to eventually get it right, its alot easier to do in a big rig or in dump trucks n potato trucks. im not tryin to be an ass im just tellin it lyk it is.

  • @seannz100 What's the point of your comment other than to be rude?

  • "Hurr, durr, let's ruin the transmission in a $35,000 truck". Say good-bye to you're synchros, dumbass.

  • must be nice living off of daddy's money

  • @Jeffreyrno everything i have i busted my ass to buy. im too proud to take money from people. maybe you should try working and you can have nice stuff too

  • @hammerdwn20 ha ha ha lmao,,, the funny thing is i'v done my 4.5 years in college and got two degree's and a promise i make enough money to keep the two new trucks i do have and the house i just had built sitting on 40 acres with a 10 acre pond.... so if your talking about busting some ass.... then i suggest you go get some busting ass lessons because you obviously dont know what it is..... nice try but your still a pussy...btw i got the house, land and truck in a year... so try me

  • @Jeffreyrno well good for you. unfortunately i cant afford that here yet. you get .5 acre lot for 300k and taxes at 10-18k a year its not possible on what i was making. Finally landed a decent job last month so hopefully things will get better for me. Theres no reason to assume that just because im young that my parents bought my truck. dont be such a douche

  • @hammerdwn20 holy shit man how are you still living there... i got all 40 acres for 35k and my taxes were no where near that by a long shot....

  • @Jeffreyrno its crazy here even trucks here are more expensive. Ill probably end up moving to PA with my new job since its only about 10 minutes into NJ

  • @hammerdwn20 Come to the land of milk and honey. 18,000 unfilled jobs, 3% unemployment rate, money flows like the oil that supplies it. Employers are paying for room and board, full benefits, high wages, etc. to get people here. I was born and raised here, avoided the oil patch like the plague, but finally gave in and am going to get my share and get out. If any interest there let me know and I'll give you the full scoop.

  • @sokodad actually im a Pipeliner now. I am curious as to what its like where you are. Im guessing you in Canada? i hear a lot about making some good money up there

  • @hammerdwn20 actually in ND. Biggest oil boom since ever. At first and still is overwhelming. They're finally getting enough housing to put people up, but still need lots more. Job I took is supplying me with everything. Food, housing, work clothing from boots to hat, company pickup to check frak sights. I'll be in safety/security. Starting at 70k a year and going up from there. Pipeliners, riggers, truck drivers making way more than I will.

  • @sokodad e mail me some details brother! :) Im an Army Sgt about to be a civilian again and need to make good money to fill my life style! Hook me up

  • @hammerdwn20 amen brother.

  • Its a ram 2500 correct? My cousin has the same truck and is loving it!

  • It's like ear poison coming out of my speakers

  • thumbs up just for listening to country, and another for driving a cummins.

  • how old are you?

  • @hammerdwn20 perfect age for that truck

  • how bout turn the radio down dumbass

  • They have a syncronized transmissions, kinda like showing how you can shift an auto stick shift.

  • @ihop54 you can still miss a gear so its not that retarded. it all comes down to how much i get from Adsense every month

  • @ihop54 lol an auto stick shift.. thats called a stick with no clutch. those are stupid. same with paddle shifts. neither require any skill.

a synced trans still requires skill and double clutching isnt really any harder. ive driven both and they require the same skill. also i drive a manual every day i refuse to drive cars for crappy drivers

  • hahaha i drive my car like this all the time only time i ever use clutch is wen im stoped then geting strted and wen im going from 2 in to 3 bc i hate the realy bad bucking thing ital do lol

  • Comment removed

  • ch59 RULESS LMAO

  • when i felt like driving like a trucker my truck had a low so id start out in low 1st then 1st and so on

  • You might be a redneck

  • safety first

  • I don't understand what's impressive about that...how bout you float them going down instead of rolling in neutral ... tool

  • @spcharwoodv I dont understand why you watched the video in the first place? Were you expecting something else besides a "dodge cummins floating a few gears"? Ill throw a Power Wheels Barbie Corvette in the next video just for you and name it the "most awesome Cummins video ever!!!". sound good? BTW there are videos of me floating down to first.

  • @hammerdwn20 i have a mazda. i once hump in a truck of a friend of mine who is big as his momma and its so big i didnt wanna go down haha. felt like was touching God. Jesus! lol

  • @hammerdwn20 dont do a stack, cool at first, but after about a month its so loud and you can't stand it anymore now i have a hole in my bed and nothing there

  • @freddythestandard yeah ill probably never do it. i doubt my neighbors would like it with me leaving at 530 in the morning and coming home at 12-3am

  • dude you have a cut on ur arm i hope ur ok...

  • Feeling one with the road and the mechanics of your own vehicle is almost as good as sex. I put over 60,000 on my 88 f-150 before selling it back in 06 (pushing total miles well past 200,000) floating gears on the regular. Never had one issue. To all the nay sayers of floating gears, Learn to drive. Put thousands and thousands of miles behind the shifter, learn, study, and comprehend every RPM your engine cycles through. Then let me know what you think about shifting.

  • I hope I don't mess my truck up trying this! But if it really works it will save me cluching all the damn time!

  • How is it you float gears i never quit under stood it

  • @countryboy702 you time the rpms to you shift on that trany i think its a 500rpm drop i start it at the 450 mark so i hit it at the 500 mark iv only mised it a few times since iv been flaoting gears and that was on my mom miata cus i was used to the granny gearing in my old silverado

  • @mpeters0991 A lot of it is feel too.

  • That G56 has rubber backed synchronizers, slip shifting it is like dynamite fishing in a barrel.

  • @fast4v302 i always prefered a shotgun for barrel fishing

  • You know when you're good at driving manual when you can dog shift on a daily basis without grinding.

  • @mpeters0991 you need to know how many rpms each gear drops. usually 500rpm for most gears

  • @hammerdwn20 and you know it when it was at the right spot, the transmission just falls into gear even easier than when using the clutch

  • you do realize that the actual truckers float gears it is because it is a non synced trans and to do it in a in a car trans is pointless unless you want to wear out you trans syncrodes

  • @Jzoutis do you realize that im an acutal trucker and a mechanic? As long as road speed, transmission speed and engine speed are the same its no problem. If the mainshaft and countershaft gears are at the same speed the sychros dont have to do anything. Sychros will give you a false feeling of being at this magic spot and thats when the wear comes. know your rpm drops for each gear and wait for the right time. holding the shifter against the gear until the syncho does its job is what kills them

  • @Jzoutis If you really want your trans to last then double clutch. you'll be getting a knee replacement instead. 99% of the time i use the clutch regularly. 76000miles 4 years and no problems yet.

  • @hammerdwn20

I drive a dump truck for a living, and I only use the clutch to start out, or occasionally to pop the tranny out of gear if I suspect there is tension on the gears. when I try to double clutch all day I get severe knee pains. and I'm only 19! no way in hell am I going to ruin my knee just so a tranny can last a little longer...

  • Really?? Retarded. Why is there a video of you just driving through town? Delete it and then be proud and have fun. Just watch the clutch...

  • anything with synchros that your floating into gear even if it dosent grind or goes in smooth its still hard on them

  • Ive got a 2007 Dually with a 6.7! I'm hoping that the emissions shit falls off soon lol.

  • @regdapimp06 make it fall off !!!

  • @hammerdwn20 Guhhhh I know lol. As soon as I get some extra coin. I have to put Tires on The 1850 Oliver first :(

  • @regdapimp06 Do it! I did and will never look back!

  • nice i thought i could only do this in my old 87 glad to see the new ones you dont have to use the clutch

  • What song is playing?

  • @343ofFDNYsBRAVEST It's America by Rodney Atkins

  • Floating gears is the only way to go...in a big truck. But in your nice Cummins Ram yur just gonna screw yourself doin that.

  • is this a 24 valve?

  • @TheDonkyPuncher common rail

  • wht year?

  • ah man i looove floating gears=)

  • Really like the truck. Have you experienced any trouble with the trans by shifting without the clutch?

  • @Z71offroad2 nope 90% of the time i use the clutch though. you just have to know when to stick it in gear or you will kill the synchros. When your engine rpms match the trans rpms for that gear and road speed it will slip in real easy

  • Thanks man

  • What year is your Cummins?

  • its pretty quiet in that cab even with straight exhaust

  • @marshall0792 cat was on in the video. thinking about straight piping it again

  • It's a Dodge Cummins...It's America!!! Rodney Atkins. Good tune! Haha.
