  • Meshuggah should perform live for a slaughterhouse haha... I'd watch that

  • "SÅ JÄVLA BRA!!!!!!"

  • I thought it said live at Mealtown :/

  • the tuning is something around A right?

  • @feverhood Somewhere around F#

  • @NoaOno The 8th string is an F to be precise, a regular 8 string tuned down half a step.

  • 0:45 awesome!

  • Anyone who likes Meshuggah is alright in my book. :)

  • Who else thinks that intro turn and headbang by fredrik thordenal was fucking awesome.

  • I just love how the guitar in the beginning just shreds through the air :)

    Awesome

  • Im somewhere in the middle of turnthatshitdown and PgasuazBasement, I just like predicting what they are playing... Like the first riff, I got really annoyed when it didn't start again after four times, but after six... So now i feel calm at the fourth and fifth time, waiting for it to start over after the sixth... It's chill.

  • at the risk of sounding stupid, I just really dig the music . I dont know shit about poly-what ever the fuck times and dont really want to . Just sit back and let the band grab you by the boo-boo with the kick ass music they make !!!

  • @turnthatshitdown Well said. you dont have to be a timing fanatic musician to appreciate meshuggah.

  • @SlaughteredInside Yes but you must be a moron...

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay And who the fuck are you to call me a moron? just some fuckin punk kid hiding behind a computer? cuz he wouldnt say that to my face in real life? Yeah thought so..go kill yourself you little troll.

  • If i might offer the debate cooling notion that the beauty of Meshuggah is that you can tap your foot though most songs because regardless of the way the meters might fall, they feel all the songs with a constant pulse, making it fresh and unique, but not alienating.

It also allows them to create some serious mosh-pit music. I love them most of that.. Being musically able, not musical wankers.

  • And of course if I didn't really dig them they wouldn't be my favorite band. I don't think you can "get" Meshuggah without having a special kind of appreciation for what they do. They are unequaled at maing music this way.

  • You guys seriously arguing over some guy wearing earplugs? :P

  • The most rotten riff in metal.

  • I love how the opening riff sounds so fucking huge and when the drums kicks in the sound just explodes !

  • Dirtiest opening riff of all time .

  • I 2nd that

  • what's with those kids in the crowd all they do is jump around.. damn need more metal heads into this world.

  • and they can't even jump around in tempo, lol

  • Kinda hard to find tempo in Meshuggah songs. haha

  • not one bit to me, u just don't got rhythm buddy!

  • haha. Don't know how to recognize a joke i see?

  • Actually, it is kinda hard to know how to listen to Meshuggah if you're new to the band and it can sound off-putting, since they use a somewhat unusual kind of syncopation.

  • its not so much an adjustment as it is leaving behind the formulaic prepackaged ever-so redundant and basic sounds\rhythms\melodies\cliches that most of us are used to.

only when you release the mind of those sonic shackles will you be able to fully immerse yourself in the meshuggah bosom.

    i never looked back.

  • That may hold true for you, but for me I can immerse myself fully in the uniqueness of Meshuggah and yet listen to other music. Music isn't so much about strucutre as it is about feeling and emotion. Once you realise this you will see all music in a new light.

  • @dujl Their music is bless, i was tumbling in darkness before I found them... now I'm enlighted

  • yeah my sobwoofer explodes!!!!

  • maybe he is like me... partially def from all the loud metal. I wear earplugs so I will still be able to hear it at all in 15 years.

  • pff what's with you fools. at metal concerts I don't go deaf by being there.

  • give it a few years, and that will change... my ears have been ringing for about 4 years and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Don't be stupid... wear your earplugs.

  • probably you put your ears all the way to the speakers and stayed there the whole metal concert. I know old metal heads and they don't go deaf.

  • you're the fuckin fool mate. i go to shows at least once every fortnight, and sometimes even more and i always wear earplugs. i have a constant ringing in my ears already and im only 20. thats irreversible damage. stop tryin to act tough cus im sure everyone thinks youre a fuckin neanderthal.

  • Haha, the guy at 0:07 says "så jävla bra!" which means "so fucking good!" in swedish :)

  • yeah man! That´s me.

  • stengah is a brutal way to open an album.

    They kill live.

  • first seconds are SOOO powerFULL

  • that riff at 3:25 kinda makes me wanna kill someone.

  • whatever, NATHAN GALE

  • So HEAVY!!! \m/

  • Probably the least dancefloor friendly band. But still FUKING KICK ASS

  • they are dancefloor friendly only to people who have rhythm, the people who hate this band has no understanding of rhythm, some people can't even keep the tempo to this, hence why they can't mosh, let alone even bob their heads to it lol.

  • Yeah, hate it so much when people call it mindless, its so much the opposite of that

  • nerd j/k ;)

i love the rhythm in 'stengah', almost as much as 'sol niger within'. the latter is probably easier to keep up with, but i think i'm also warming to the former.

  • headbanging on every meshuggah's song is impossible. but guitarists do wtf

  • Tomas almost always has something going in a 4/4 beat. :) If it's not the snare it's a cymbal in there somewhere.

  • i know but following a 4/4 with your head when guitar's time signature is completely different is a bit difficult don't you think so?

  • It is indeed. I guess they get plenty of practice though.

  • nope :).

  • true.. he often uses multi-tempos and one of the 2 tempos is 4/4 (usually the one he plays with the hands)

  • Polyrythms... Gotta love em

  • Zemieh, why did you have to say that? This will just trigger yet another long ass debate between a bunch of geniuses. IT'S ACTUALLY NOT A POLYRHYTHM, IT'S A POLYMETER HUR HUR.

  • dude, ain't impossible

actually, it's so much more fun and heavy than normal metal, the takes the beat and doubles it's impact, and adds a lot more attitude

  • that's because i love meshuggah! my fav band

  • sorry that's WHY i love meshuggah

  • SICKEST F'N MUSIC EVER F'N PERIOD!

  • polkamannen! @ 0:14

  • Everytime i listen to tomas haake my ears start to bleed!

  • good or bad way? xD

  • the good way!! :D

  • lätt bästa bandet på metaltown 2009

  • lätt

  • Haha, 07:00

    SÅ JÄVLA BRA

  • Jens gives a good vocal perfomance here.

  • that was great sarcasm buddy haha

  • wtf?

  • looool xD

  • Like with every meshuggah video, here is the obligatory time signature discussion: a polyrythm is simply two different rythems played at the same time. The time signature here is 4/4, like hip hop or pop music. The accents are just really wierd. Instead of on the one they are placed insanely over a huge pattern of up to 32 bars :O. The meshuggah sound is characterised by the fucked up accents (and the 4/4 China that everyone headbangs to) rather than time signatures. They reinvented the wheel...

  • @PgasuzBasement Yeah, i know what you mean, they're so good they make a square wheel roll!!

  • @PgasuzBasement Great explanation of Meshuggah's music. Bravo, sir.

  • @PgasuzBasement Amen to that!

  • This band is brilliant

  • two different time signatures

  • just 4/4

    polyrhythms

  • Shame there's no good recording from this song on youtube. love to see this song live with dvd quality

  • +1 !

  • hey, what do you mean???

  • Folks in the crowd naging on others calling them Un-cool cause they use ear-plugs, btw wtf? ^^ I clicked reply on somebody and came up here..

  • ...yes, there is...I've found it...

  • ok and whats the link for that video? love to see it. thanks

  • Go to my channel and I've collected the entire (original) Nothing album, except Glints Collide which I had to use a remastered track for.

  • Is the dude at 1:10 wearing ear plugs or hearing aids? I'm assuming whichever it is, it's for reasons involving Meshuggah.

  • It looks an awful lot like ear plugs and I bet it's somehow related to being in the close vicinity of Meshuggah.

  • ear plugs. Now that I have gotten older and my earing is failing me, I wear earplugs when I go to shows. As a matter of fact, you can wear them and actually here the music better. It muffles it slightly, but you wont have ear-piercing tones coming down on your eardrums. plus its easier to talk to the people your with.

  • Ofcourse you use earplugs, You have to be an fucking idiot if you dont.. (not you personally I mean)

It's so lame with all those thugs saying "nah you ai'nt cool if you got earplugs..."

  • Exactly, when you're 40 years old and can't hear shit then you're not as cool anymore.

    Wear eaerplugs.

  • protip: don't headband to a polyrhythm. especially a meshuggah polyrhythm.

  • protip: artificial groupings are different from polyrhythms.

  • What are artificial groupings?

  • An artificial grouping is a series of native subdivisions (8th note, 16th note, etc) that is incongruous with the given meter. In 4/4, you can string together 5 note 16th note passages and only change the emphases over the meter without changing the subdivisional increments (i.e introducing triplets). That being said, prior example will repeat exactly 5 beats later and then the whole figure will repeat with respect to 4/4 every 5 measures. So, in a sense, A.G's are opposite of polyrhythms.

  • So what's a polyrhythm then?

  • playing different feels within a certain time signature

such as 16th note triplets in a 4/4

  • That privilege is reserved for the shugg themselves only

  • Haha! Well, no one does it better than them

  • LOL I love how the crowd cant keep the rhythm, can't blame them

  • Yeah Its funnyl, especially considering there's nearly always a simple 4/4 sig on the crash/china or what have you. People just want a challenge I guess :) That's what Meshuggah are all about...

  • every show me and my bros go to we have a pact: first throwdown/ hardcore dancer u see u kick his ass. first one to fuck up a throwdown dancer gets a lucky 8 pack on the other guys. :)

  • the heaviest band ever

  • ...Boom da da da... "så jävla bra!!!" hahahaha

  • hahaha!

  • In no simpler terms, Meshuggah are brutal on a level that hasn't really been seen since Pantera.....

  • Hells yeah, they dont rely on gimmicks, costumes, attitude etc. it's just their music is so new and menacing and brutal it's punches your teeth down your throat and fucks your gum-vag with its musical phallus...

  • fuck yeah!

  • Wow Zaneknight, you're so tough. Y'know, you could probably beat my ass! You could kill me! But I'd like you to tell that to Meshuggah. Wow Zaneknight, Wow...I'm pretty sure Meshuggah are glad to have a fanbase no matter what the audience does.

  • i love how Jens just stands there glaring at the crowd.

  • SO GODDAMN HEAVY!

  • BRUTAL

  • they fucking destroy

  • maybe cuz ppl are there to actually see the fucking show and not worry about some fatass beer belly redneck knocking them out instead

  • no shit!!

  • some ppl are actually into the MUSIC and not just beating the living shit out of the smallest ppl in the pit. yeah, mosh pits r cool, but u gotta just listen sometimes

  • ...especially with bands like Meshuggah. I think Meshuggah's following owes more to the music's musical complexity and composition than it does to the ferocity of the sound... though they always hit the sweet spot in that regard as well...

  • I like gettin rough in a pit and i charge like a bull but if ur talkin ppl throwin punches and those douchebag karate demonstration kicks i usually end up pulling them out of the pit and being surprised by how many people help me do it too. kinda funny. they throw so many dangerous moves out there for other ppl but when ppl come threaten them they back down like pussies, but if they didnt back down they'd get their asses handed to them. don't be a douchebag in the pit is what im tryin to say lol

  • Stengah mean "half" in malayan. Just wanted to brag w my knowledge. ;)

  • Haha aren't you cool.

  • stengah!!!!!!!

  • no wonder why stephen carpenter loves this band so much

  • fucking killer song"""ª("/)ª)"¡!/)¿(!?¿

  • STENGAH RULES

  • That's the beauty of their music... Usually, all you gotta do is find that tempo being played by a hat or a ride or something, and you keep that rhythm and open yourself up to all their little breakbeats and stinger riffs! I love listening to bands that grab hold of you and MAKE you listen to them, not just by force, but by introspection...

  • u can do more confusing stuff with 4/4 than any other time signature, which does sound odd but theres just so much u can do with it

  • I can trust anyone who plays Brady.

  • lol. bradys r the shit. handmade in the great land of aus

  • that guitar tone is fuckin demonic.

  • agreed!!!!!!!!! I LOVE that sound

  • There is simple multiplication involved but they don't use math to write or keep tempo other than standard 4/4

  • Most of their stuff is 4/4 but most riffs go for more than 4 bars, thats why they don't sound repeated/looped.

  • Fucking nice vid!

    Hail Meshuggah.

  • They know there math! They are very good musicians. A lot of the metal pirate looking clowns don't really get it tho?.

  • Class video, even on the camera recording the guitars sound insanely cool.

    Freakishly tight!

  • This song is pure fucking sex! I FUCKING LOVE IT!

  • They use poly rythyms alot actually.

At least a great deal of times throughtout an album, there isn't entire songs like that, but they certainly love their poly rhythms

  • Great, I saw this live but my phone couldnt handle recording it haha.

  • seeing them at hellfest tomorrow!!!!!!

  • i wish metaltown was a real town. ide live there.

  • would be awesome to hear thordendal's solo in a good quality video!!!

  • dom e bäst!!!

  • fuk yeh

  • Thatz teh sound! 8D

  • there were no mosh

  • it's not all in 4/4, jesus christ! it's a fucking polyrhytmn, only the snare and high hat are playing 4/4

  • there's different ways to look at it. Members of Meshuggah have previously said that they view a lot of their music as heavily syncopated 4/4 rhythms, since much of their material is odd meters over a 4/4 drum groove.

  • Pretty much. The vast majority of their stuff is in straight up 4/4, in insane polyrhythms.

  • Beat displacement is what they do to sound crazy complex, but basically ever drummer alive uses polyrhythms, I mean, come on, how could you not?

  • im a drummer but dont no words for shit. wats a polyrhythm?

  • a polyrhythm is when the drums play in a different time signature to the guitars but it still works weirdly

  • Polyrhythm = separate rhythms at the same time that follows a specific pulse/tempo.

Or you could call it two or more rhythms sounding simultaneously.

  • Incorrect Hernru.. A polyrhythm is 2 or more separate rhythms being played simultaneously.

  • Isn't what they're doing polymetrics?

  • Polymetrics and polyrhythms are practically the same thing. The term "Metric" referes to time signature, temp etc. And poly just means 2 or more. When played.. You have a polyrhythm. Polyrhythms tend to sound "off-beat" although there isn't actually such a thing as "off-beat", people just use the term to express the sound of the displacement of a beat.

And with regards to Meshuggah, they often incorporate polyrhythms and or polymetrics into their songs such as this one and many many others.

  • why the fuck did i get 3 thumbs down for this one? know your fucking theory people! yes, they are awesome, yes, they use odd rhythms, but they rarely use polyrhyms!

  • You know why? Because you sole some polyrhyms... WTF? It's about the MUSIC!!!

  • sole?

  • man all their stuff is polyrythemic stuff :P

  • well yea but tomas is notorious for his ability to keep 4/4 with his hands then have something silly like 23/32 with his feet going. iv tried to do that, not hard once you can do it properly but it may take like 9 full days to get it right

  • LMAO people trying to headbang in that time sig

  • its not that hard just most of em probably dont understand odd time signatures

  • It's not odd time
