General anaethesia has a strong and lasting "drowsy" effect on any animal or human, and surgeries take a few days at least to stop aching from the incisions. Anyone who has been through a moderate surgery would know this. I would bet he was right back to being a happy pup no more than a week later, if perhaps a little bit calmer.
