They got the melee combat style of Byakuya all wrong. He would never use martial arts in a fight.

actually, he's quite proficient in hand-to-hand combat; he has to be to become a captain. he trained with Yoruichi when he was young.

Yes Byakuya did train with Yoruichi, but he hated her. Byakuya didn't want to do anything Yoruichi taught her, execpt once when he did the after image. And plus in the Manga as well as the Animated show. He only used Kido and fight with his sword. They never really showed his martial arts ability yet anyways.

just because they haven't shown it yet doesn't mean he doesn't have any skill in hand-to-hand. shinigami captains are supposed to be skilled in all three fields of combat; hand-to-hand, kido, and sword fighting.
