The BP are a great entry point for anyone curious about whats vital in jazz now. They're among ground zero for an eclectic new scene that, I believe, will increasingly blend forward-jazz with post-rock and even punk. Pretty cool considering how many look-back-bores in the jazz world churn out preservationist styles (example: "Dixieland") . We're ready for a rowdy and relevant scene. Saw TBP 2 wks ago, row 2 near drummer Dave, who wore a Rush t-shirt! He was a maniac n the show was awesome.
This band is amazing! I can't tell how popular they are to say if they should have "more popularity." I've been thinking about getting more into jazz, so, well, here I go.
my cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is so futuristic and monsterish! it owns all covers! and it finally puts soul in "Teen Spirit" come listen and judge for yourself!
this is not a good version .... I understand the attempt and I am a fan of jazz but this is not a very good version ... i think the drums are totally innapropriate from the get go ... it totally does not swing
@bishop199115 It definitely sounds "off", but that's intentional. He's trying to recreate the grungy, dirty, discordant sounds that Cobain used to include in his compositions. It's harder to notice on the guitar because of the distortion and the general sound of a guitar.
This is not The Bad Plus's best, but they're still a great band. I suggest if anyone wants a FAR superior version of this, check out this song on their studio-recorded album. It's a masterpiece.
@VictrW7 That's just jazz tho i guess! On the night it might not work the same! Jeff Beck is still notorious for being amazing or on par on his night, live, because he does things he's still never done to the guitar before, and no-one else has done either!
@sammyharris so true...besides these guys are all insane musicians so I can't even call it distasteful "making fun" even if that was what they intended (which I doubt it was).
@polishcomedy How dare you say something like that? Have some respect and stop criticizing people for playing different types of music. Both The Bad Plus and Nirvana/Dave Grohl are highly regarded and display incredible musicianship in their own right. Rid yourself of your ignorance.
@zembryoz There is no way Grohl could play in the style of Dave King, It's like apples and oranges. One being a "rock" drummer and one being able to do it all. King used to play in the Happy Apple, Halloween, Alaska, 12RODS, look him up on wiki. Grohl is a "rock" guy. There is simply no way. This is an OK cover. Not their best, but enjoyable nonetheless.
@DHermanEsq Grohl is a pure genious and I have no doubt that he could play this. He's easily one of the finest drummers alive and I bet he experiments with jazz styles from time to time when he jams - like all drummers do. However, this version of Smells like teen spirit hurts my ears. Bleh..
I would say that is very hard to get from this clip, as he is obviously closer to the camera, and this is definitely not a high quality recording.... He also seems to me to be a little more than solid.
they arent exactly a cover band. I mean i guess they have a lot of covers, but if you hear them talk about it, they say they are upholding the jazz tradition of reinterpreting popular music.
This is so refreshing to see. This is what music is supposed to be about. Jazz musicians have always taken popular tunes and arranged and improvised over them in this way. In nice to see a great group of players taking some newer tunes and using that tradition. As for the grunge comment. I think Kurt would have understood and dug this.
I LOVE Nirvana, but this a great version of this song, this song isn't meant to be grungy, it's meant to be an acid jazz song, and it is, I love the drumming here
It shouldnt remind you of grunge because they are clearly not playing it in that style. That is the point of covering a song to make it your own. Im not a big jazz fan and of course nirvana was better but you have to respect what they have done here.
such a tasteful approach. it doesn't sound cheesy!!! the first time i listened to this when it came out i saw it listed on the cover and was just waiting to be disappointed.
the dissonance with the chords is fitting. it sound like out of tune guitars and feedback. its punk rock to me.
