  • alright it was cool untill he killed it on the keybord

  • Ahh, que lástima que no los conocía cuando estuvieron acá en Argentina, ojalá me entere la próxima vez si es que vienen!

  • It's "SMELLS Like Teen SPIRIT". Come on, now.

  • you cant just change tempo and instrumentation and then call it jazz.....

  • Comment removed

  • @mateopumba747 hell yea you can

  • @mateopumba747 You're right. Good thing they're playing Jazz in addition to doing those two things.

  • goddamn i love that bass

  • The BP are a great entry point for anyone curious about whats vital in jazz now. They're among ground zero for an eclectic new scene that, I believe, will increasingly blend forward-jazz with post-rock and even punk. Pretty cool considering how many look-back-bores in the jazz world churn out preservationist styles (example: "Dixieland") . We're ready for a rowdy and relevant scene. Saw TBP 2 wks ago, row 2 near drummer Dave, who wore a Rush t-shirt! He was a maniac n the show was awesome.

  • makes Kurt sound like a sober man

  • monk meets nirvana... divine

  • meh, not nearly as good as the original

  • andeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • ho wel....

  • 57 people must be really smelly teenagers!

  • Very bitchin'

  • a Good Drummer

  • great!

  • I could actually see Taylor Hawkins taking a stab at something like that.

  • Wow! Nice jazzing it up!!!

  • 9 out of 10 people who leave a negative comment about this tune probably don't even like Jazz to begin with...

    Absolutely brilliant!

    I love it!!

  • This band is amazing! I can't tell how popular they are to say if they should have "more popularity." I've been thinking about getting more into jazz, so, well, here I go.

  • my cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is so futuristic and monsterish! it owns all covers! and it finally puts soul in "Teen Spirit" come listen and judge for yourself!

    it's on my channel!

  • Ohhh, the drums!!!!

  • o.O i think the guy on the piano is drunken :O

  • @Bohnethekeks the piano is drunken not me ..

search "Tom Waits - the Piano has been drinking"

  • this is not a good version .... I understand the attempt and I am a fan of jazz but this is not a very good version ... i think the drums are totally innapropriate from the get go ... it totally does not swing

  • @sweetfly66 "i think the drums are totally innapropriate from the get go ... it totally does not swing"

The drums are what totally makes it. I love David King's style!!1

  • great band, worth every penny to see perform live.

    thumbs up!

  • what a great cover. this is exactly what jazz has been since the beginning...creative, blue interpretations...

  • not a fan, don't really understand what the piano is trying to accomplish with the random notes

  • @bishop199115

Ethan Iverson is a highly skilled pianist. I can assure you the notes are not "random".

  • @bishop199115 It definitely sounds "off", but that's intentional. He's trying to recreate the grungy, dirty, discordant sounds that Cobain used to include in his compositions. It's harder to notice on the guitar because of the distortion and the general sound of a guitar.

  • Check out the hat Iverson has on. Is he paying homage to Monk, since he's playing at a club bearing his name?

  • I saw these guys open for the Pixies back in '04. It was pretty memorable. They didn't play this but they did play Velouria by the Pixies.

  • @TTOMO

Gotta be rough for the pixies to come on after Ethan. Would be like Eve 6 coming out after STP.

  • warum kann das nicht mein drummer sein...der is soooooo klasse an den besen...*neid*

  • This is mindblowing!

  • I think it was

    SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT

    but damn its Jazz!!!

    ^^

  • @Aneuriizma yes it is but i really dont want to change it hahahaha

  • @Aneuriizma

And Jazz was here way before rock showed up, explore other genre's, It's awesome

  • @Aneuriizma YES IT IS ! SO MUCH BETTER !

  • This is not The Bad Plus's best, but they're still a great band. I suggest if anyone wants a FAR superior version of this, check out this song on their studio-recorded album. It's a masterpiece.

  • @VictrW7 That's just jazz tho i guess! On the night it might not work the same! Jeff Beck is still notorious for being amazing or on par on his night, live, because he does things he's still never done to the guitar before, and no-one else has done either!

  • definitely smells like teen spirit.....finally someone who made sense of the lyrics....great compensation

  • They remind me of early Medeski, Martin & Wood.

  • So amazing this version.

  • @mrpigowns I believe you mean disonance.

  • Dissonance* : D

  • What a fantastic version.

  • incredible...

  • the drummer is beasting it up lol!!!

  • music for attorneys? weird fucking world.

  • How do you "make fun" of a song that is already making fun of itself?!? Kurt would have loved it

  • @sammyharris so true...besides these guys are all insane musicians so I can't even call it distasteful "making fun" even if that was what they intended (which I doubt it was).

  • way better than the original

  • Did you fall from BAOBAB? or are you the BAOBAB yourself?

  • @dude1gabe5

    what a stupid comm.

  • ahhhw I wanted to hear the bass playing the lead :) Yet, great version.

  • proper jazz drums...

Piano part is sometimes a tad too free (F#cked-up chords!!!) for my taste...

  • @eklectric I rather like the discordance.

  • wooord!

  • que envidia que no me enteré de esa fecha.

  • great stuff!

  • what a tasty drummer

  • such a cool version

  • I love instrumental music, particularly cover songs. Awesome cover!

  • actually, you suck. that drummer is fucking amazing.

  • i'd pay good money to see dave grohl try to play this drum part

  • hahahahaha, dave grohl has his own style..he's not the best in the world, but can stay simple and sound amazing.

  • I'd give my right arm.

  • @polishcomedy I have no doubt he could do it

  • @polishcomedy How dare you say something like that? Have some respect and stop criticizing people for playing different types of music. Both The Bad Plus and Nirvana/Dave Grohl are highly regarded and display incredible musicianship in their own right. Rid yourself of your ignorance.

  • @polishcomedy trust me , he will D:

  • @polishcomedy hay man dave grohl kicks ass on drums, u listen to breed or lounge act just listen to them man peace

  • @polishcomedy

Dabe Grohl is a pro drummer mate :)

  • @polishcomedy He's like number 6 drummer in the world. Grohl could easy play this style and with more syncopation. Ex drummer here.

  • @zembryoz There is no way Grohl could play in the style of Dave King, It's like apples and oranges. One being a "rock" drummer and one being able to do it all. King used to play in the Happy Apple, Halloween, Alaska, 12RODS, look him up on wiki. Grohl is a "rock" guy. There is simply no way. This is an OK cover. Not their best, but enjoyable nonetheless.

  • @DHermanEsq I think you need to investigate Grohl a bit more. He's well beyond a "rock" drummer, let along being well beyond just a drummer at all.

  • @DHermanEsq Grohl is a pure genious and I have no doubt that he could play this. He's easily one of the finest drummers alive and I bet he experiments with jazz styles from time to time when he jams - like all drummers do. However, this version of Smells like teen spirit hurts my ears. Bleh..

  • whoever says that this sucks doesn't understand it.

go and listen to paul anka. ROFL

  • I think that they do understand it.

    Right? ;)

  • I'm seeing them tonight, I'm pretty excited

  • I saw them live, they rock so hard cause they exactly know what they are doing and you can see in their face how proud they are.

  • Good musicians, crappy cover.

  • O show deles é muito bom !!!

  • I would say that is very hard to get from this clip, as he is obviously closer to the camera, and this is definitely not a high quality recording.... He also seems to me to be a little more than solid.

  • It's not just this clip I'm taking that opinion from.

  • how?

  • Finally, a worthy cover of this tune.

  • Smells Like Teen Spirit*

  • hahahahaha this is great

  • godd song

  • im happy someone uploaded this video, it's fucking great

  • what the fuk are those chords @ 1:20!?! i love jazz but playing it is so confusing to me

  • TOO many cover bands in the world. You're all good musicians, go and write some good music!

  • They're not a cover band. Just happening to be making a cover. Cool interpretation of Cobain's classic though. I reckon.

  • My mistake, they do have a few too many covers though...

  • lol IMO some of their covers are SO different from the original they can barely be called covers...

  • and what about all those jazz musicians who keep in playing standards? still some interpretations of those standards are pure genius in my opinion

  • They are more than a cover band. They are reinterpreting classic songs in a jazz context!

  • they arent exactly a cover band. I mean i guess they have a lot of covers, but if you hear them talk about it, they say they are upholding the jazz tradition of reinterpreting popular music.

  • @Cadence55 That's a fair point - some of my favorite jazz pieces have been 'covers' of traditional classics.

  • check out the new solo artist video "girls just passing by"

  • Dave King FTW! (The drummer.)

Didn't know that he didn't play traditional.

Their cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World is amazing.

  • Aha, aha. Dig them accidentals.

  • ummm what?

  • sweet

  • that's just sooo bad ass! the drummer's really cookin!

  • they are amazing

  • very special! Bravissimi!

  • that song gets a second youth there! awesome band

  • now thats music

  • отличная версия, но по радио с ними играла вокалистка...

  • WOW that was amazing!

  • This is the track that made me fall in love not only with The Bad Plus, but with jazz and experimental music overall.

The Bad Plus is totally one of the most creative contemporary bands on this planet...

  • Teen spirits = Breezer?

  • awesome

  • Wow!

  • Impressive. I would visit my dentist more often if he had this on in the waiting room.

  • lol

  • this is great

  • this must sound like a piece of sh*t to everyone without musical knowlegde but i'm impressed

  • catharsis in argentina.

    beautiful and upsetting.

  • this is what i want to hear in a Starbucks when i walk in.

  • This is so refreshing to see. This is what music is supposed to be about. Jazz musicians have always taken popular tunes and arranged and improvised over them in this way. In nice to see a great group of players taking some newer tunes and using that tradition. As for the grunge comment. I think Kurt would have understood and dug this.

  • nice to see people that "get it" on youtube.

  • uh yea its not supposed to sound like grunge you dumb fuck

  • I LOVE Nirvana, but this a great version of this song, this song isn't meant to be grungy, it's meant to be an acid jazz song, and it is, I love the drumming here

  • It shouldnt remind you of grunge because they are clearly not playing it in that style. That is the point of covering a song to make it your own. Im not a big jazz fan and of course nirvana was better but you have to respect what they have done here.

  • imprecionante!!!!!

es por eso que amo ir a Thelonious!!

  • Then don't comment on it and shit on it if you don't like it. Now you made me and a million of other people hate you. GOOD JOB

  • !!!!!!!!! 10 !!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing the way an instrument as elegant sounding as a piano can feel like Cobain's grungy vocals when played correctly.

    Fucking awesome performance.

  • such a tasteful approach. it doesn't sound cheesy!!! the first time i listened to this when it came out i saw it listed on the cover and was just waiting to be disappointed.

the dissonance with the chords is fitting. it sound like out of tune guitars and feedback. its punk rock to me.

  • Spirit*

  • Top notch cover!

I love how he slams on the piano

  • i love how deliciously dark and off-kilter they make this song

  • bonita versión

  • This plays in the Starbucks that I work...LOOOVE IT. Makes my day.

  • it sounds great to me. Very nice.

  • niiiice

  • awesome. I think these guys are great.

  • que grandes

  • Utterly amazing arrangement.

  • y??, fuiste??, yo no pude, como estubo???

  • no pude ir ¬¬ era para mayores de 18.

    fuck niceto club

  • nice

  • you obviously have no musical background or experience.

  • Who are you to say I have no music background? Know who I am before blindly insulting me.

  • al fin alguien ke entendio....

  • mmm...suena muy

    bien pero pues...es
