one thing for sure...I think those Korean fighters are some of the toughest fighters in the world especially if they are ever trained by the likes of Angelo Dundee or Manny Steward etc..
whatever happened to Korean boxer Aung Soon? I think that was his name. He fought Mark Breland in the 84 or 88 olympics, I think...He would've been a great fighter from Korea but never heard anymore from him since that Breland fight as amatuers..
I would love to see Chong Pal Park, the great Super Middleweight from South Korea. He was champ for awhile, then lost it to Fulgencio Obelmeijas in a great fight. i don't see Park on here, anyone got him on tape to post? That would be great
You're right the fight was in Panama, and I can't believe the ref didn't stop it. He was American, Jay Edson. While the IBF, WBC and WBO may not have the 3 knockdown rule, the WBA does, and I recall watching fights and having them stopped because of that rule, even though the fighter was unhurt. Sometimes what was clearly a push or the fighter tripping was ruled a knockdown by the ref and the fight was over.
I believe that the 3 knockdown rule was already in effect, but the ref valued his life more than anything, so it could've been 14 knockdowns and he wouldn't have stopped it. Even good refs don't dq Korean fighters when they fight dirty because of the same thing.
@guimbo1 most title fights dont have 3 knockdown rules. why would the ref be afraid for his life? this fight wasnt even in korea. if anything the ref would be on the side of his countryman.

I'm Filipino and there are other Asian fighters on pac's level. Infact I think the greatest Asian Fighter is Japanese - Fighting Harada - the man beat some of the best fighters of the day and should have won 3 titles in different divisions back when there was only one title for each.
Korean fighters are actually some of the best and most exciting to watch plus underrated. Especially Myung Yuh Woo, Sung Kil Moon, and Jung Koo Chang.
Definately~ and as a korean i thank you for that, we have that hot blooded, take every damn hit attitude XD. i love watching filipino boxers because they have some of the smoothest fights, where the hits connect like lightning, fast and precise. Honestly, i feel asian fighters in general are underrated, especially due to our small statures compared to american, canadian, uk, middle eastern (all beasts XD), and eastern european/russian boxers, which the crowds love.
Two things come to my mind: i) the amazing fighting spirit of the Korean boxer Hong; and ii) if this fight had taken place today, the referee would have stopped the fight in the second round probably after the third knockdown.
the uppercut at 3:32 ish was BEAUTIFUL...
no but seriously, that was a beast hit

I remember watching this fight with my father, who was an amateur boxer himself, as a kids in Korea. Thank you for the trip through my memory lane.

Yes, it would've been stopped today.
Another notable thing is that even the Korean announcers think Hong's got no chance--repeating "yukboojok"! :)
