I'm taking driving lessons, and i was in love with driving, but i was only on automatics. Now i got a lesson with a manual, and my first car will be a manual for sure! Auto sucks.
@2buck4dH8rz Depends on whether the car is geared for acceleration (gears' sizes allow the engine to gain speed more easily) or top speed (gears' size allows the engine to spin the wheels faster without itself spinning as fast); same concept as a multispeed bike.
But a general rule of thumb is, for a typical car with a 5 gear transmission: stay in 1st till 10MPH, then shift into and stay in 2nd till 20MPH, then shift into and stay in 3rd til 30MPH; you can see the pattern.
I drove an auto at 6, and drove a manual when I was eleven. It was alot of fun! It has been years since I had to drive another manual so for now I'm reviewing.Seriously, I drove better when I was younger. xD

Driving a manual these days isn,t difficult anymore, once you let the clutch up you already moving. Try to drive an old european manual car, then you learn it the fastest way :P

just one thing...it's recommended to start breaking and then pushing out the clutch...if you do it the way you showed us, the car starts moving faster since there's no contact with the engine and, as we all know, an engine without gas flow decelerates the car (engine breaking)...especially when the road is slippery your technique may cause trouble.
@dashfront21 stalling the car just shuts off the car, or as i imagine, because it does the same thing to a quad, so just hold in the clutch, put in back in neutral, and start over again.
what happens when you have to emergency stop? ur not really gonna think rationally enough to first hit the clutch and put it in neutral, all you think is fuck break!

If you wanna stop while in 1st gear just hold the clutch and break in at the time time, then press the gas a little and ease off the clutch to start going again. Q2. if i was so stop/brake immediately, how would i do that? eg if i was in 5th gear? do i apply the brake->clutch->neutral->brake? is it necessary to downshift of i can immediately go into netural and apply brake? or its not good for gear box?
Q3. Will i stuff the gear box, if i was @ 5th gear and don't downshift to 4th and went into 1st gear everytime?

its not just let goin of the clutch to change gears. You gotta do slowly and in the right timing or else itll stall a lil. Thats the number one problem i still need to fix :/

2) Starting on a hill: After you take your foot off the brake to give the car gas to switch into first, your car rolls back. Could you have the parking brake engaged and then disengage it once you're in gear and letting off the clutch while giving gas?

Man i must have watched every how to drive standard video on youtube. I got it after about 4 parking lot lessons but it was very frustrating leading up to that 4th lesson. For those still having trouble just practice every chance you get and ull get it down. no video can teach you that feel of your specific car

Today in my auto tech class we were doing a rotation, and i went to set the e-brake, i didn't know it had been ripped out already, when this kid asks me what I'm doing, i explain and he says "what are you talking about the e-brake is right there". I had to explain to him what a clutch is, in a high school auto tech class. Now I'm downloading this video to show him how to drive a fu&%ing manual. meanwhile my brother couldn't get into the class as the last spot was filled. guess by who.. FML.

Man i must have watched every how to drive standard video on youtube. I got it after about 4 parking lot lessons but it was very frustrating leading up to that 4th lesson. For those still having trouble just practice every chance you get and ull get it down. no video can teach you that feel of your specific car

What??? Put the car in neutral, THEN brake? Too late... you're just rear-ended someone. My god, is this really how they teach people to drive manuals in the States? Absolutely terrible. Take off the handbrake, THEN put in 1st? Right, so what if you're on a hill? Not once was the 'bite' point mentioned, or 'clutch control' on a hill. And if the gear is in neutral, you do NOT need to press the clutch to start the engine. Take absolutely no notice of this video. What a terrible instructor.

Today in my auto tech class we were doing a rotation, and i went to set the e-brake, i didn't know it had been ripped out already, when this kid asks me what I'm doing, i explain and he says "what are you talking about the e-brake is right there". I had to explain to him what a clutch is, in a high school auto tech class. Now I'm downloading this video to show him how to drive a fu&%ing manual. meanwhile my brother couldn't get into the class as the last spot was filled. guess by who.. FML.

@The240Project he is probably taking the class to learn. Gotta start somewhere. It makes no sense to offer a class to teach you about cars if only people who already know about cars take the class. Help the kid out and maybe he can do the same for someone else one day.
