2002 world cup was my official first, seeing that i paid more attention to it, and for me there was more controversy, and i guess it was the last of the players from the early 90's. Bless Bierhoff. LOL Michael Ballack seemed to young then too.
This world cup was enjoyable, i've only watched 3, as im 16, 98, 2002 and 2006, but this world cup seemed to have a nice atmosphere about it, and having a non cheating (unlike south korea) plucky host like Germany proving Hansen wrong every day was priceless. But much like Euro 2008 the tournement was played in good manner. And then France's reimergence out of nowhere was good to see. It was a bit of shame it was dominated by big teams, but that's because a lot of Africa's regulars didnt qualify
I have a feeling that 2010 will see the first African semi-finalists at least. Although I think if they'd hosted it in SA in 2002, their squad then would have been able to make a better fist of home advantage than their current lot. Ivory Coast and Ghana have overtaken them recently, while Nigeria and Cameroon are traditionally better anyway.
why do ppl always get upset when big teams dominate.. I like to see big matches, and personally I get annoyed if crap teams like South Korea and Turkey somehow reach the semis..
@moaizerecordbreaker wow i never clocked that i guess it ade sense rooney is the greatest player england have produced since gazza in terms of raw and technical ability
the BBC has become shit. BUT you cant knock their World Cup coverage, it was awesome. I only watch BBC2 now, only for Top Gear! But I'll be watching for Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010.
apart from 2002? id say that was one of their best to be honest, that and the athens 2004 olympics openings are probably the two best since ive been alive (born in 1986, first sporting memory 1996)
Zidane deserved to be in this talk about favouritism and putting Rooney in there.

This is much better than the ITV opening titles. They didn't show any reference to Germany at all.

WC 2002 was average at best, same for WC 2006 actually.
I enjoyed the last EC's more. EC 2008 was great, EC 2000 too, EC 2004 too except for boring Greece.

This World Cup was nowhere near as good or as thrilling as 2002. This was a good one though, especially the Italy-Germany semi!

This should have been the background theme to a movie trailer (i.e. Dark Knight, or Superman Returns) with the tempo slowed right down!

I agree, the BBC always produce quality intros for the big tourneys, but does anyone else find their overall football coverage a bit piss these days?
colster4life 4 years ago 2
England bias is one thing, but when it's so overwhealming and it's portrayed with such poor punditry you can't help but switch over to ITV.
evolvedtheobserver 3 years ago
Good point! I also think ITV win out on the commentators (Tyldesly, Drury and Champion are a good team). Beglin is alright for an ex-scouse too, ha!

when Wayne Rooney returned to fitness, did anyone notice that Gerrard was replaced in the opening titles?!

I did. Unfortunately I didn't manage to record the Rooney titles but it made me smile at the time.

Whwn it comes to the big occasions, the BBC add a touch of class to their production. Best ever intro, even better than Nessun Dorma in '90,
