@newhackcity I thought that too. But I built one anyway, the immense feeling of satisfaction of building one and getting it working (after correcting the occasional mistake) is unbeatable.
this is the best bass sound ive ever heard!! i was wondering, you say you have two basslines running, does that mean you are using two SID chips to make the sound? and what are you using to give that kind of i dunno, crunchy delay or feedback sound, or is it just how you programmed the midi to sound? im not familiar with midi or C64 stuff yet. could i get this bassline with just a C64 with mssiah or somehting or do i need several SID chips for the thick sound?
@oobiedoob MIDI isn't used here (although the name MIDIbox implies it ;) - the basslines are played by internal sequencers. In difference to C64 based solutions like MSSIAH, the MBSID bassline engine is more enhanced, since it doesn't rely on the slow C64 processor. E.g. MBSID allows to use all three oscillators of the SID, they are modulated independently at a much higher update rate. Features like Detune, OSC sync, ringmodulation, PWM are heavily used here. The delay has been added by ext. Fx

welll yeah i understand that this project is made by ure self....i gathered information about all stuff...and its pretty sad....there is no guide for newbie at all...sure there is tips at the web page how to make it...but still im lame....would be cool if someone would make video guide from 0 till nice midibox ))
actually there are excellent walkthroughs at ucapps . de, TK aka ucapps website and an active community. Oh and they sell diy kits, so you just need to solder all parts into its place, get a couple of MOS SID Chips (ebay, salvage from C64's, maybe someone on ucapps forums got spare ones) plug em into the sockets and get ready to jam! The MidiBox's microcontrollers are available with the latest software on em already... :D Easy as making a sandwich!
it's not hard to find old commodores in germany, they still come at a price though ^^ I already spent around 350$ (~250€)... gotta wait till all the commodores arrive and see if at least 8 of 9 chips work :) Still gotta buy front panel, knobs, wilba's PCB's (front panel & base board), case, PIC's... eventually I'll replace the mono potis w/ separate channel stereo ones and use the 2nd channel to drive LED's in a way they lighten up if the knob is turned to the right and dim if turned left...
@alpensaga i guess you could do some kind of external box for extra rotary encoders and buttons. the sammich box is pretty stuffed as it is so i don't think a DINX2 pcb or similar would fit.
sammichSID will get some special display modes. Yes, one mode displays the sequence steps, e.g. it would be possible to display all 16 steps in a row.
It's really explained in the manual; I don't know what information you are missing, and I think that it doesn't make sense to copy&paste the appr. sections into this limited YouTube text entry box. Btw.: probably it's better for you to ask in the MIDIbox forum for help if something isn't clear.
That's some good control you've got - always risky tweaking the sounds so much with feedback/delays and osscilator changes like that going on - I was amazed at how you managed to stop it from "running off" at quite a few places.
THIS IS MOTHERFUCKING MIND BLOWING SONG!!! TRULY UNDERSTANDABLY AMAZING!!! I have downloaded the mp3 version and I have listened almost every single day at least once a day. It is truly mind blowingly awesome.
I truly love the part where the distortion gets in even it wasn't planned.
All what I can say...
I WANT MORE DO MORE, I WANT MORE DO MORE, I WANT MORE DO MORE, I WANT MORE DO MORE, I WANT MORE DO MORE of this, pretty please. :')
Very cool. I had a C-64 with 6582, too bad I didn't got a resonable chance to explore the difference between that chip and the "ordinary" chips. You're lucky to have 6582 :)
Wilba sold more than thousand of these chips in the last months. These are new old stocks (not cannibalized from a C64) - if you are interested, search in the MIDIbox wiki for "Wilba's 6582A SID mega sale" :)
There isn't really a difference between 6582 and 8580. I guess that 6582 was produced as replacement part for repair services.

@DonMoza LoL, in Poland one C64/128 costs 15 - 20zł (5 - 6€) ^^
With all elements one midibox costs ~400 - 500zł (102 - 127€).

would the LEDs on the Sammich SID behave in the same way? I.e. displaying sequence steps?
Biopharmer 2 years ago
sammichSID will get some special display modes. Yes, one mode displays the sequence steps, e.g. it would be possible to display all 16 steps in a row.

you mean the sammichsid has a sequencer in? :O
Kurukusu 2 years ago
yes! :)
ucapps 2 years ago
Oh, thats awesome!..Can you control it from CC so i could have a midi-controller controlling the steps on it?
Kurukusu 2 years ago
No - there is a Roland TB like entry for basslines, and a TR like entry for drum patterns as explained in the user manual.
ucapps 2 years ago
Oh, but thats nice too, but how would that work on the sammich?
Guess i shouldnt bother you..will try to find it in the manual..just wanna know how it would be done on the sammich compared to the bigger brother.
