Social security was put into place when the average life span was 3 years longer than the time you can receive benefits. This was not something that happened by chance, they did this on purpose. IF you have to keep social security, you have to follow its intent and designed plan.

Funny thing is that currently SS does not add a penny to the deficit. Cutting benefits would 1) continue to send surplus SS taxes to cover non-SS budget costs and 2) remove the obligation of the US to refund past surplus payments to future recipients. Remember, these codgers PAID for these benefits for thirty-five years. Tax cuts for corporations and small businesses that outsource US jobs is the reason we're in this budget crisis in the 1st place. More of the same crap again! Medicare and SS, in fairness, do need to start at age 70. Medicaid and SSI should be available for cripples, but not lazy druggies that want crazy checks. Welfare makes people into burdens on society. Jobs make them prosperous and independent. Ask any unemployed person - they'd take an actual job and independence over a welfare check without question.

In Hong Kong by contrast you can start a business in a day and don't have to worry about minimum wage, so you can create low paying but still productive jobs, which is ALWAYS better than no job at all. They only have 3.6% unemployment, which looks pretty good when compared to the US doesn't it?

Not all jobs will ever have safe working conditions. There are many even higher risk than being a cop or fire fighter, such as being a farmer or a fisherman (they sound fairly mundane, but statistically they are some of the most deadly occupations). These high risk jobs also carry nice pay checks, so it a choice you have to make.

The thing is we often get too obsessed with everyone having jobs. They don't just need any old jobs though, they need productive jobs. You could employ half of the country to dig holes, and the other half to fill up holes, and you'd have 100% employment but I think you can see why it wouldn't work out too well.
