We just had a meeting with out legislators in southeast lower MI, and several teachers testified that on their current teacher salary, their children qualify for free school lunch and WIC!!! New state legislation will end pay steps, so if you start out at $28,000 per year, no matter how much more education you get (that you pay for yourself AND that is required by the state), you will never see a pay increase---UNLESS you can "earn" it through students' standardized test scores. Shameful!
We are suppose to find out tomorrow supposedly who is not being rehired...or what the "formula" is...either way, they are waiting til te last minute to tell people... And I thoughtteaching Math would give me a "little" security...not these days :~(

I'm doing my field work at a city school right now that's supposed to be top rated, but my teacher is doing her own technical and electrical work. This is because they have one guy doing tech support for two different schools. The lunch room is so understaffed that I have students going through the school day without any food. She has to enter grades and attendance into three different systems every class period. I also just heard that they decided to close the local alternative program.
You gotta be kidding? These uber lib teachers that turn out nothing but predators, criminals, and gang members with an over 50 percent school failure rate are upset? Oh gimme a break! Bulletin to employee union members, EVENTUALLY you will run out of other people's money! Taxpayers are TAPPED out and are tired of paying the tab for incompetent liberal whackos!
Wooooooooot!!! These guys are awsome!! >:] go teachers I don't want to have 50 other kids in a class and just one teacher! That's absurd how the heck will I learn with only one teacher! And my fave teacher got a pink slip I don't want to go back to my middle school and not see them there!!!
@filmfx66 That sounds like it would suck. I hear that teachers in California don't get to keep very much after they pay all their living expenses. I know of a couple that can't afford more than a trailer as far as housing, and that's just paying for the two of them. Imagine if they had kids of their own.
Teachers in CA are one of the highest paid in the nation. They make far more than the national average for a family.
And the only things in CA that are truly more expensive are the taxes (again, almost highest in the US) and that is to support the ever growing benefits of the public sector unions.
@MrWoodysClass huh? pretty much every part of living in California is more expensive than in the rest of the country. Especially in Los Angeles and San Francisco
Response to JACKHUSKEY - Yes RAISE TAXES to the wealthiest. Everyone that make over 250,000 per year should pay higher taxes. THAT would save 5,000 plus teaching jobs and some! Don't our children deserve better? If i made 250,000 per year I would gladly pay more. Correction officers do not make that much, do they?
GREAT RAP-Let them all know what is really going on...All those opposed to it are either from the private sector or against UNIONS...Lets not froget that UNIIONS are responsible for obtaining FAIR working conditions and wages for workers all over this country. The wealthiest 2% of this country dislike UNIONS. Argue THAT!

Great rap, lots of talent there... but I have to ask, how is this guy proposing that they pay his salery? The money has to come from somewhere? Raise taxes? So that private sector workers have to get fired cause the boss has to cough up an extra 30K this fiscal year? After the good years we have had, this recession is the natural reaction, and it will go away in time. I lost my job last year and am now a corrections officer, we are hiring.
@jackhuskey we are losing a lot of great young teachers. Wouldn't it be a special day if we get to a point where we can start training our correction officers to be teachers, because we are keeping young americans from going to jail. Takes tax money, and a society that believes in education to get there.
just remember people....these kids growing up now, without librarians in their schools, with 38 other students in their classes making any individualized learning next to impossible, will one day BE THOSE PEOPLE RUNNING THE GOVERNMENT.
THEY WILL BE MAKING AND PASSING LAWS THAT AFFECT YOU!!!
Do you really want them under-educated?? I DON'T THINK SO.
Yes support the teachers by freeing them of the manipulation of the unions. Allow the teachers to be free to properly teach our children. Protest the unions stranglehold on our failing public school system. Put the good of our kids above the interests of the unions since the unions obviously don't care about our kids.
Best to ignore all these John Birch Society types attacking teachers and unions. The California Budget Project blog clearly shows that if we taxed the upper quintile of income earners the same rate as the lowest quintile, there would be no budget 'crisis' and we wouldn't need to lay off teachers or shortchange our public schools any more. La lucha sigue y sigue.
@searcher619 Wow, that was a racist assumption. Is it because I'm bilingual? For what it's worth I'm of Irish-English descent, like the brave San Patricios were. Sorry to pop your little Klansman bubble, but not all Americans are monolingual English speakers. At least all the educated ones aren't.
LOL!!! You are the one being racist. I am a 2nd generation half Cuban half Mexican American. Calling me a Klansman is 100% OK for you? Oh, and btw, I speak 3 languages and most people I know speak at least 2. Where did I accuse you of being a racist let alone label you as a member of a group like the KKK like you did me? Americans come from all over the world so you aren't anything special. You come off as a snob by implying only the uneducated only speak 1 language.
@searcher619 My deepest and sincerest apologies. The only people I've ever known to be critical of the phrase "La Raza" are Minutemen, Birchers, Klansman, and other Supremacistas Blancos. Imagine my surprise that someone of your ethnic background to use the phrase as a pejorative. Of course, calling me a fool for defending public education and hardworking schoolteachers indicates that your politics might not be that far off from those that of those that use La Raza disparagingly. En la lucha.
I understand your frustration but LAUSD is WAY TOO BIG! It's mis managed and bloated. LAUSD needs to be broken up to many independent districts. For example, Canoga and El Camino and all the feeder schools should have their own district, etc.
What did you all expect would happen when you let in 10 million illegal aliens, that then have 1-5 children each? They don't pay taxes, but they want a good education for their children.
This is the result.
Don't worry, if they close our borders soon, in 10-20 years when the illegals are all assimilated, the problem should fix itself.
@1bangor so shouldn't your solution be to punish the people who hire illegal immigrants without documenting the labor and requiring both the employer and employee to pay taxes? or are you just xenophobic?
I know people who have been looking for a steady job for over a year. The job market isn't what it used to be. How bad it is depends on your profession but that fact is it will likely take you more than 1 month ti find another job.
Great song with an even better message.. I would like to share this on FB however the headline that comes up "Justin Bieber Raps" isnt going to get any views from my friends for sure....
What for? You can't pretend these budget problems don't exist. Your calls will do nothing. All states have to make cuts across the board. People all over the country are losing their jobs due to budget issues. Teachers are no different from me or any other worker.
Do you know how many students from LAUSD make it to college? Other countries in the world also have economic problems but they do not increase class-size to 42, fire teachers and decrease the academic school year. Have a look at this article at the New York Times on March 10, 2010 -Many Nations Passing U.S. in Education, Expert Says. PERHAPS BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE LIKE YOU DO NOT CONSIDER EDUCATION A PRIORITY!
Oh what crap. Our our public education system is a joke. It rewards mediocrity and ignores excellence. When I was in high school it killed my drive to excel. After I noticed how few teachers gave a *hit and how kids who were hardly doing any work were getting the same grade as I was I stopped and did the minimum and got the same high scores. My senior English teacher actually resigned when the administration tried to force him to pass kids who did no work at all.
That English teacher was one of the few good teachers in my school who actually gave a dam about his students. Your trying to give teachers a pass on this mess is pathetic and that's putting it mildly. I learned only one thing from my high school years. That I am NOT sending my kids to public school. After I graduated from that pathetic place I went on to college and went back to my over achiever ways. Anyway, we have the teachers union in large part to thank for this.
What are the names of the two teachers that wrote this? It's great and so creative! They mention having gone to Castle Heights, which is where I went.
listen up people: we are already cleaning our own rooms 'cause the custodial staff got cut so badly last year. we are on supervision at lunch and nutrition 'cause there just aren't enough adults to children for basic safety. now 5,280 of us just got RIF'd. class size is going to 39.5 students to 1 teacher. that's crowd control, not teaching. rise up!
@lilysparker Tell your politicians to close our borders. You are experiencing first hard what happens when all immigration control has just been totally wiped out.
We have huge populations (tens of millions) of people living in this country, with big families, putting their children through our school system and not paying for it. You should know this better than anyone else.
Our system cannot support it. You are but one victim. You're right, we do need to rise up. Just know the true enemy.

As a former public school teacher all i can say is-
PARENTS be prepared to teach your own kids in the future if you cannot afford to send them to private school.
Sadly- schools are decaying at a fast pace.
Thank God my oldest is now a graduate. As for my youngest, I will most likely be homeschooling him in the near future.
