Religion is bullshit. Don't get me wrong, but the bible never says Christ was born on December 25th. That was added later because of the winter solstice.
Wow... I hope Bill Maher has actually done research so he knows that all of this has been disproven and none of information on horus is actually in the Book of the Dead.
Jesus came not to create Christianity, and his teachings were for all people regardless of their personal beliefs.
Jesus came to show by example, that it was possible to live a life dedicated to the most complete showing of Unconditional Love. He illustrated that when you can find it within your heart to love all life including those who oppose you, it is possible to create balance and harmony.
@AoSSaint none of its true except that both horus and jesus were of royalty and in a manner of speaking both performed miracles. This was disproven a long time ago actually. Jesus has more similarities with Krishna than horus. And no, i am not a christian, i think religion was just what people did before they had science. Disproving a religious claim, however, should be done with research. Bullshitting bullshiters is never a healthy hobby, that type of shit will almost always get out hand.
I'd like to hear where he got his sources. December 25th is nowhere in the New Testament, and I highly doubt it's part of any ancient mythology. I also doubt how other gods were called the messiah, which is a Hebrew title.
one day every tongue will confess "Jesus Is Lord" that includes Bill Maher, satan, and every breathing person on this planet. God is love and loves every person no matter how great thier sin may be, as long as they are alive God will forgive them and if they accept Jesus they will recieve eternal life. All you must do is believe and be like Jesus was filled with love for everyone including your enemies and this world will be a better place.
@gambitx4000 , I know its hard to understand but Jesus Loves you, and gave his life to save you from eternal damnation. Read the Bible and do extensive research and you will see the truth. Videos like this are made to distort you from the truth bt it is very far from the truth.
@UncutEdge yeah Jesus was sent by god to be tortured and die so that he could save us from god himself, because otherwise god would have had everyone burn for eternity. Yeah! That makes a lot of sense
@gambitx4000 when God originally made man, the Bible says he was a perfect being he did not feel tempations or committed sins because God had provided everything. Satan a cast out angel from heaven was jealous of man and decided to make hime sin, since God is holy, when man sinned we were taken away from grace. The sacrifice Jesus did by being perfect and never sinning and being wrongfully punished gave way for people like you and me being able to recieve redemption even though we are sinners.
hell was not made for people, it was made for the devil and his demons but since we are sinners and the Bible states that the price of sin is death we are condemned to the same fate.God sent his only son Jesus to live among us, face the same things we do and to overcome them and die an unjustful death so we could have the possibility of reaching Heaven. The choice is ours, either you choose to believe or not, God gives us the choice. I chose to believe and accept Jesus as my saviour.
@UncutEdge Yeah, the bible says that, and it also says that the earth is flat.
Daniel 4:11 "The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH" (How could one tree be seen by all the Earth if they knew the Earth was round.)
Job 38: 14 "The earth takes shape like clay under a seal" (clay under a seal is flat)
@ishaan212 Those passages are quite metaphorical. The Old Testament as a whole makes use of figurative language. Regardless of your views of the texts' significance/purpose, I don't think it's entirely wise to make judgements about their knowledge of the earth's shape based upon the text.
@wildstyle2192 In that case, could you please explain to me the metaphor behind "the earth takes the shape of clay under a seal" (flat)? It doesn't really leave much to interpretation.
@ishaan212 It's important to look at the preceding verses. It's full of figurative language, which is mostly about buildings (flat surfaces and 3D objects). It talks about the earth's "dimensions," "foundation," and even its "cornerstone." It also talks about the clouds' "garments" and the "doors" of the sea. The clay under the seal is simply a continuance of the extended metaphor of the earth being God's creation.
@ishaan212 well its funny you mention those verses I actually read those about a week ago. In Daniel 4:11, Daniel was interpreting king Nebuchandnezzars dream and the dream was about how he was going to lose his mind and be humbled by God for being so arrogant, the text is about a dream it was not meant to be taken in literal terms, dreams never do, and in Job that verse is simply reffering to Jobs lands not the entire planet, you have to read the context not just a single verse. read the books
Star Wars episode 1. What a fucking dumbass. That doesn't count. Star Wars starts with "A New Hope", and ends with "Return of the Jedi". Everyone knows that. all the expanded universe is bs too. now go watch the original series, and wish you were half as badass as Han fucking Solo.
All I know that...I KNOW that's what I believe...I believe it because it's true...the bible says that all things are possible with god...it's funny you should bring that up because ANAKIN SKYWALKER WAS BORN TO A VIRGIN. I wish this man had interviewed more intelligent people in this video so we could have seen some proper debates, rather than just mindless, "You're wrong, because I believe, all I know is god THEREFORE my ignorance proves you wrong, blasphemer." The words of an insecure faith...
People conjure a few pyramid texts and compare them to those of the bible. They just make funny ways of coming up and comparing random sentence out of context. Without actually reading both whole stories. Then they watch zeitgueist and they believe every single crap that is shown in that movie as if it had any relevance or as if the stores altogether made sense. Or as if it made sense that 2 k yrs ago, imaginary characters created a book, imaginary cuz apparntally the apostles did not exist too.
@runemaster123654 "She raised up the inactive members of whose heart was still, she drew from him his essence" Tell me how I'm delusional. You can read a copy in your local library as I did, or, if there are no libraries around you "which there probably aren't". People keep making comparisons and drawing random pyramid texts... when you compare each story to the other it makes no sense. I can send you the online link if you're somehow unable to look it up on google... its the direct pyramid tran
You can lead a theist to knowledge but you can't make him think. Seriously though, this has been covered in much more depth in "the greatest myth ever sold"
@chasoepoch Whomever believes in the greatest story ever sold has never read the book of the dead, has taken random text out of the pyramid utterance, has not read or hates the bible, and has little or no understanding for other cultural dieties...
@kaiwaterz religous people are so narrow minded and won't ever think twice about what you say no matter how reasonable it sounds. all they refer to is the bible, which to them, is something etched in stone where one must not question.
the best part about horus is that his symbol is mighty eagle. jesus on the other had is hippy looking freeloader who has one of the gayst animals as symbol, the lamb. look it up. lambs are one of the most gayst animals on earth.
This is so retarded, Horus: **Was born of Isis after having sex with "her brother" Osiris' dead body "necrophilia" whose wang was attached by magic. **Was not crucified, and not resurrected, he is reincarnated in every pharaoh. **Who is annointed in oils, but baptized? Well, His uncle "set" tries to rape him in which he throws his semen into a river, in which he gains victory somehow by this" **His main goal is avenging his father. **He is half man half animal. **He doesn't die, his father does.
I wish there were more people like Bill Maher. That way we could just kill each other over money and jealousy and not pointless religions no one can prove
@drummerslovebtbam I can easily prove that these are just blatant lies and a combination of every mythology into a whole bunch of crap. Look at my other comment above. Also, **Book of the Dead hymn to Osiris: Horus never walked on water, he went in, drowned, drowsed, etc, but never walked on water. **Book of Gates Chapter 3: He didn't had 12 disciples, his grandafther Ra, had 24 gods that did his bidding. **Book of the Dead: He was never cruficied, his wather was killed and buried under a tree.
@CrippledKnight Then explain the obvious similarities between Mithra and Jesus smart ass. Can't deny that shit buddy... Mithraism predates christianity and yet had almost all the tenets that christianity has.
@rollbander66 Ugh... all you have to do is simple. I don't ask you to believe in Jesus Christ as I do, all I ask you is to understand that this is all bullsht. I won't insult you as you previously did... all that I tell you is that you go look for the ACTUAL history and claims for these previous dieties, then compare them, not go into a youtube video and believe every crap that an idiot says, just like ihn this video, bill maher completely distorts reality. Read the actual books, not this crap.
@CrippledKnight I have read this stuff i was very into egyptian mythology as a kid and young adult and still have a interest in it and the book of the dead does predate christ by over 1000 years and all the commandments given were identical to the ten commandments and so was the life story of horus it isnt bullshit its factual your just trying to hide behind your religion because you live by the simple quote "Because the Bible tells me so" use some logic you religious parasite.
@CANABALISTIC999 I'm a religious parasite, ugh, ok, let me try and not respond with hate, like you did, let me just reply that Horus, according to the book of the dead, which, of course, predates Jesus. Was NOT born of a Virgin-she laid with her DEAD BROTHER/HUSBAND, was NOT crucified, he never dies! He reincarnates in every pharaoh! So, I don't know what the heck you studied, but it sure wasn't egyptian so please, stop lying, it makes you look as retarded as there ppl.
@CrippledKnight he says specifically that he was crucified and virgin born, i bet your just pretending to have a clue what your saying and continuing to make stuff up to defend your beliefs. Please show me where you read the book of the dead so i can see for myself where you got your info
@CANABALISTIC999 as opposed to a book mass produced now that originated from the deserts where many uneducated sand people live NOW, so thousands of years ago it must have been written by a divine god or prophet who spoke to said invisible man in the sky who hears us and sees us all.
sounds like a load of crap to me. At least the dead are more credible then hallucinating arabs.
@runemaster123654 well put, the church of any and all religions is a serious problem they ask for donations even from those who cant afford it and they KNOW WHO THOSE PEOPLE ARE. The catholic and Mormon churches use those donations to pull political bills (ala Prop 8). Not to mention the churches brought about the crusades, spanish inquisition, witch burning's, and many other horrific events. After all of this anything that didnt have this massive brainless following would have been destroyed.
@CANABALISTIC999 And if you believe in Horus, I don't hate you, you have your choice to believe in the Lord of the Dead. But please, don't make the assumption that just because it uses complex words like the bible they're the same. Ppl that come up with this combine Horus with Osiris, with Ra, then make up a few extra stuff that's not even in the Hymn to Osiris, then combine it with literature from the early 1800-1900, then, they get to these conclusions. Please explain to me, how is that right?
@CrippledKnight I shouldnt have even posted that i know that people of faith refuse logic and come up with random stuff or refuse to listen to disprove the facts just as you obviously do. So i wont post about religion again because i know with a religious person you can never win.
@drummerslovebtbam That's what people have always done... and this guy is simply lying out his teeth, and if he believes it he probably has not read the actual documents... and the translation to lazarus? Wow, epic fail, so is the resurrection and virgin birth and most of the crap presented here.
this only proves to me two things, first Jesus was an alien, and Monty Python's life of Brian is more historically accurate than Mel Gibson's passion of the Christ.
We recently found living foreign organism from asteroid rock. So yes, there are living organisms out there somewhere in the universe other than species of Earth.
Seriously, even that stubborn fools at Vatican even admitted that there is a very high possibility of other species out there in the fringes of the galaxy other than Milky Way. Scientists recently found an Earth-like planet in Gliese 581 system galaxy. I guess someone will have re-write their bible to fit in all these discoveries.
@redfootninja No I do not think you are testing me. No matter what test God or satan throws my way, I will believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I'm sorry, I guess it's just the way I was raised. The words of Jesus Christ just make the most sense to me, I can't help it. I believe in Jesus. Why do people that don't believe in Jesus want to argue so much with the believers? There are more arguments on Jesus Christ than any other issue in the world. Believers want atheists in heaven.
@CHASEDONKYFISH Hello there bro. Keep doing that, sadly i got tempted by these retards one day. Thankfully I actually studied this books these people talk so much about being Jesus. the parallels are nonexistent and they take random verses out of context and try to make sense out of it. Just like in the bible, they do the same with it. This video is a complete lie, specially if you read the book of the dead. Keep believing in chtrist, he is not a liar like most retards in this blog. Respects :)

Satan is very clever and intelligent people. He is always inventing new messiahs and religions. But if you truly do some unbiased and thorough research, there is no question that Jesus Christ is the true Messiah. He is coming soon.
@CHASEDONKYFISH God should come back as a woman in the Middle East.
God made the Devil.
God doesn't have gender so stop calling God,"him". And study history that is older than Christianity. You will see the "Christ" stories before Christ existed. hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!! ;)
@TheREALforeverone Wow do you search me out or somethin? Why do you look so much at Religious videos if you are an atheist? Whats the point? Your just wasting time of your average of 75 life years before you say hello to the dark. But if your wrong about evolution and all that....But rest assured it will be nothing but blackness for you if your 100% certain we evolved from monkeys and animals are still evolving. There must be an evolving species somewhere out there. Oh guess not. Well GOOD LUCK!
We recently found living foreign organism from asteroid rock. So yes, there are living organisms out there somewhere in the universe other than species of Earth.

@CHASEDONKYFISH Who said I am an atheist? I believe in high power and evolution. the world isn't 5000 years old. That is just stupid. I am not wearing blinders like you. One more thing... The word is "you're" not "your". Yes, I followed you to see what other ignorant things you posted. Thanks for not disappointing me. ;). YOu people are annoying because you think everything is the "DEVIL". HAHAHAHA!!
@CHASEDONKYFISH The ironic part is there are evolving species in the universe and on Earth.
Your lack of understanding of the theory evolution is way too insufficient for a proper discussion.
What is with all this fear of death and blackness? All living beings dies, reality is crueler than people would like it to be.
I suggest you make the best of your average 75 years and stop running away. Since if I was God, I'd sent the fools who waste my gift of life waiting for the afterlife to hell.
never mind horus - look at sumerian texts eastern texts predating the old testament new testament which have the same basic story of a saviour son of god or god himself coming to earth being put to death then resurrecting etc- there are numerous myths and faiths that this basic story came from- joseph cambell covered this in his pbs series- all religions steal ideas from each other- the ideas in the bible date back to a further era
Through her magic Isis revivified the sexual member of Osiris and became pregnant by him, eventually giving birth to their child, Horus." (Richard Wilkinson, Complete gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt, p. 146)
"On this hour of the mornig, of this -----THIRD DAY ----, is come, when thou surely passet on to heaven, together with the stars, the imperishable stars"
Utterance 556 1382f
"When this hour of the morrow comes, this hour of the ----THIRD DAY---- comes, where the father Osiris will be reborn, at the place where the gods are born."
@teched246 Horus is not osiris in this text but ok, whatever. Then he is passing on to the afterlife, sht, you people really just take random text out of nowhere. Why don't you bring up the one when set shoots semen out to horus and he defeats set by throwing the semen into the river. Or the depiction of 24 gods meaning 24 hours of the day, but that is somehow translater to 12 poor disciples. These were PEOPLE, not gods. This is pointless, you see what you want to see cuz you try so damn hard.
The "sources" used for Zeitgeist are outdated, unreliable, non-academic, non-scholarly, speculative, and/or conspiracy-laden tomes written by folks who are not trained in biblical scholarship, historical Jesus studies, Egyptology, or related fields, and/or rely on other non-scholarly, outdated, pseudo-historical books, and are therefore filled with errors:
Here is some commentary on the "conception of Horus" from various Egyptian scholars:
"...drawings on contemporary funerary papyri show her as a kite hovering above Osiris, who is revived enough to have an erection and impregnate his wife." (Lesko, Great Goddesses of Egypt, p. 162)
"After having sexual intercourse, in the form of a bird, with the dead god she restored to life, she gave birth to a posthumous son, Horus." (Dunand / Zivie-Coche, Gods and Men in Egypt, p. 39)
@jrockphoto "Through her magic Isis revivified the sexual member of Osiris and became pregnant by him, eventually giving birth to their child, Horus." (Richard Wilkinson, Complete gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt, p. 146)
@jrockphoto "Isis already knows that she is destined to bear a child who will be king. In order to bring this about, she has to revive the sexual powers of Osiris, just as the Hand Goddess aroused the penis of the creator to create the first life." check your resources! found out what 20 leading REAL KNOWN Egyptologist are saying about G. Massey, Tom Hurpa, and Boyd Kuhn (who are SELF ACCLAIM EGYPTOLOGIST). The movie Zeitgeist is based on poor scholarly work, Dec 25th is not even found in the bible.Horus was born when Isis found the dismembered body parts of her husband Osiris and put him together to concieve Horus.ahahaha wow does that sound like a virgin birth! ahaha
@PatheticPony please provide exact quotations of this fact.. and your resources. google "The Leading Religion Writer in Canada ... Does He Know What He's Talking About?

read what REAL KNOWN EGYPTOLOGIST are saying about these commarisons.. and remember half of them are NOT CHRISTIANS!!
Where are his sources? Dec 25th is irrelevant. It's not in the Bible. Horus wasn't born to a virgin. Read the story. Does the sound like a virgin birth? It's a stretch. Horus baptized? Again, that's taking Christianity's definition of baptism and then manipulating it to fit with Horus. Baptism has no roots in Ancient Egypt. Tsk tsk.
There were like a hundred messiahs with stories similar to jesus, just google christ like characters or "other messiahs" or whatever will bring them up.

@Absalom231 I heard this jesus horus thing before, I don't even know the horus story nor the interest on ancient egyptian gods. The skeptic in me makes me doubt this because it could have been pulled out from someone's ass for all I know. I will check your source, thanks.
To anyone looking for the sources on the 3 day burial of Horus(Osiris) just google "Richard H Wilkinson Ikhernofret Stela" Wilkinson and 3 others are the translators
This egyptian artifact describes the 5 day Passion Plays of Osiris, in which he is entombed on the 2nd Day ,3rd Day, and 4th day (3 Days). After the 3 days are up, he is reborn/resurrected at dawn, as Horus, the rising sun.
Considering that each of these motifs are shared between the myths of horus and jesus (i.e Betrayal, 3 day burial followed by an immediate resurrection at dawn, 12 apostles, and the saviour spectacled on the cross ETC) you must be out of your cotton picking mind to convince yourself that the bible's authors haven't plagerized.
"Paul places jesus' crucifixion under the broader category of what it means to be hung from a tree" ....Exactly, crucifixion meant other things.
@teched246 The problem with this reasoning is that these parallels can only be presented in the broadest possible categories: Betrayal, 3 day burial and resurrection (where is this even attested?), 12 followers, crucifixion that really isn't crucifixion. And no, Gal 3:13 is not proof that "crucifixion meant other things." I can't even see the logic in this. Paul referred to a literal crucifixion as a hanging on a tree, not to hanging on a tree as crucifixion. There is a HUGE difference.
@wittenb horus spectacled on a Cross/Tree while jesus is spectacled on a Cross/Tree is no accident. Neither is the fact that horus had 12 followers who exorcised a serpent spirit on his behalf, as well as spread truth and recieved bread and wine. The 3 day entombment of Osiris during the 5 day Passion Plays of Osiris is a dead give away (See Ikhernofret Stela translated by Richard H Wilkinson and other scholars -- not the 4 part format).
Remember to recycle your bible when discarding it.
@teched246 You're aware, aren't you, that Osiris' body is moved from the temple on the second day, and that he's raised on the fifth. How is this three days?
@teched246 Exactly. Horus: Dead on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, reborn on the 5th--dead three days, raised on the fourth. Jesus: Dead on Friday and Saturday, resurrected on Sunday--dead two days, raised on the third. Don't try to fudge this by saying that Horus "is reborn immediately at dawn" on the 5th day. THAT IS A REBIRTH ON THE FOURTH DAY.
@wittenbergdoor No, Osiris is *entombed* -- not dead -- for 3 days (2nd Day, 3rd Day, 4th Day of the festival) and is reborn/resurrected at dawn on the last day of the festival (5th Day).
@wittenbergdoor When the authors of the OT spoke of the 3 day entombment, they specifically stated that the son of man would be in the tomb for 3 whole days and resurrected immediatley after. This is because Osiris was in the tomb for 3 days and reborn/resurrected immediatley after. It is not my problem that the authors of the NT are bad mathematicians.
All in all, the concept is egyptian in origin. Nit picking at trivialities is all you have left.
@teched246 Basically, the argument is as follows: Horus was crucified and raised from the dead on the third day. But it isn’t really Horus, it’s Osiris. And he’s not really crucified, he’s just “spectacled on a tree.” And he’s not really dead, he’s just "entombed" in a tree. And this didn’t really happen on the third day, it happened on the fourth, but don’t worry, it was just the dawn of the fourth day. The logic is piercing.
@wittenbergdoor The argument, if you listen to Zeitgeist carefully, was that Horus was buried for 3 days and was resurrected immediatley after, which is exactly what the OT foretells of the son of man. The egyptians considered Horus the son as also being father, Osiris e.g Horakty (Horus of the two Horizons, rising sun and setting sun).
Any discrepancies between the OT and NT only shows how false the bible is in it's claims.
@teched246 Where in the OT does it say that the Son of Man will be in the tomb for 3 days and will be resurrected immediately after? And if Zeitgeist (he he) claims that "Horus was buried for three days and was resurrected immediately after," then at least it has one thing right--except for the fact that he's not buried, he's trapped in a coffin that's encased in a tree. Oh yeah, we're calling that "entombment." The problem is that in the Bible Jesus is resurrected on the 3rd day, not the 4th.
@teched246 Can you provide links to an ancient, original Egyptian source that verifies your claims about Horus. Not some book written by a supposed "scholar." If not, then that should tell you something..
@teched246 And with regard to the alleged 12 disciples parallel--doesn't it make much more sense to say that Jesus chose 12 disciples to correspond with the 12 tribes of Israel? Not only does the New Testament make this connection (Rev 21:12-14), but it is actually part of the Jewish culture out of which early Christianity arose?
@wittenbergdoor According to the Ikhernofret Stela, after Osiris is entombed for 3 days during the Passion Plays, he is resurrected/reborn (reborn as Horus) at dawn the next day in a ritual known as the "Raising of the Djed Pillar".
In the Ikhernofret Stela, Isis and Nephtys are said to kneel at both sides of the tomb in which Osiris is to be placed. The imagery of the Djed Pillar combined with the CROSS, shows isis and nephtys kneeling at both sides of the Djed Pillar with his arms protruding out from the pillar, and from the Cross shown atop of it, Horus' arms outstretched.
Thus, you have your christian savior spectacled on a Cross/Tree, with two mary's (like Isis and nephtys) at his feet.
"Isis learned that the chest had been carried out by the sea to Byblos, where it had been gently laid by the waves among the branches of a tamarisk tree, which in a very short time had grown to a magnificent size and had enclosed the chest within it's TRUNK. The King of the country, admiring the TREE, cut it down and made a PILLAR for the roof of his house of that part which contained the BODY OF OSIRIS."
@wittenberdoor The Djed Pillar, in one of it's aspects, represents the spine of the bull (Osiris). However, in Utterances 574 of the book of the dead, Osiris becomes entombed within the tree trunk which is then identified as the Djed Pillar. This is in concordance with Plutarch's account, "The Legend of Osiris" in which he details the events following Osiris death, specifically stating that Osiris was entombed within the Djed Pillar.
@teched246 Concerning the Djed pillar--so Set tricks Osiris to get into a coffin, seals the coffin closed, throws it into the river, the coffin is recovered by Isis at Byblos, and a tree grows around it, which is symbolized by the Djed pillar. Oh my God, you're right! This sounds EXACTLY like the biblical account of Jesus' burial and resurrection!! ;) Can't you see how ridiculous this is?
@wittenbergdoor but cant you see the basic idea is the same- every religion takes a common theme and makes it their own- the fundmentals however are linked by similiarity- the bible ws written during a time when the authors grabbed bits of this and bits of that to tell a story- a little history some myths some made up bs and simple truths!
@salvadory First, there is the question of the data itself. Are these legitimate parallels? Moreover, how do we define fundamentals? And even if some fundamentals are similar, what follows? Let's not forget the immense differences between different religious ideologies. AND consider that many of the details cited by Acharya et al are peripheral and isolated. One of the greatest weaknesses of all this is that there is no plausible mechanism for the transmission of many rather esoteric traditions.
@wittenbergdoor use all the big intelligent words you want- it takes just simple common sense and simple understanding of mythology to see the bible is a hodge podge mix of various prior religions myths etc! Its also very clear that the savior and messiah stories existed many centuries before christ- as many of the bibles big stories like the flood- which dates back to sumerian myths-!
@salvadory This is exactly what I'm talking about. "Savior and messiah stories" is waaay to vague of a description. Every story that has a hero is a "savior messiah story"! This is parallelomania--seeing parallels where they don't exist. If you're defining the terms like that, of course you're going to find parallels. As for the flood, if such an event did indeed happen, why would it be surprising that various cultures preserve garbled remembrances of it?
@wittenbergdoor its obvious you are a bible believer so no amount of "data "will shake your opinion- there is no evidence for a worldwide flood so all the stories in the world whether they parrallel or not mean nothing- what they clearly mean is everyone has great localized floods - it happens everywhere so ofcourse every culture has a story- flooding occurs everywhere including in the middle east! The chinese also have ancient flood stories- they see some of the worlds worst flooding!!
@salvadory Nice dodge. Stay on track. My point in posting comments on this video is to comment on how I think that this kind of speculation regarding parallels to Jesus is shoddy scholarship at best, and yet it's paraded by Bill Maher who likes to present himself as an informed, learned individual. Regardless, does the biblical story require us to understand Noah's flood as a global flood? The "world," for many ancient peoples, spanned only a limited amount of known territory.
@wittenbergdoor thats exactly my point- as if your a person 5000 years ago whos knowledge of the world is the five miles around you and it floods- you assume the whole world has flooded because in essence "your little world" is flooded! There are many renowned historians and experts on biblical study as well as people like joseph cambell who was in fact the the leading figure in mythology study who point out these arguments- not just somewhat intelligent tv show hosts- !
@salvadory I agree (except for the 5 mile part ;). But so what? Why does the flood need to be global? And so what if Cambell believed these things? That doesn't make them true. Just because we can imagine connections between various myths does not mean those connections are true. And even if connections are really there, there is more than one way to interpret the evidence.
@wittenbergdoor the bible flood story is global so if it wasnt global which science has all but proved it wasnt then the bible is wrong ! the flood stories are all from different eras- so its clear they were seperate events! Yes campbells belief isnt absolute but it makes far more sense than the story of noah or the other flood myths- just as talking snakes and jonah the whale clearly should make the intelligent part of you question these obvious fairytales-
@salvadory And at any rate, the issue raised in this video isn't Jonah, the flood, or talking snakes--it's Jesus. The central point of Christian theology is the gospel. The claim is that the gospel is a recycled myth. I'm saying it's not. All these other stories are a different discussion. Not that I'm not happy to dialogue about these, but these are peripheral issues, they have little to do with the core of the Christian faith, and they're not the topic raised in this video.
@wittenbergdoor ok i admit i got off topic slightly- and im sorry for that but ill stick by the clear simple common themes that the christ savior myth echoes of previous saviour myths from all around the world and the historical and educated arguments hold far more water than christian claims-!
@salvadory no prob--that always happens with utube discussions. Nothing more to really add here, except that there are "historical and educated arguments" on both sides here, my friend. Just because someone is skeptical of Christianity does not mean that their arguments are warranted. Read my dialogue with teched246, if you like, and you may see what I mean. There just isn't enough [good] evidence to support the whole history of religions/recycled mythology position.
@wittenbergdoor thanks id still say the evidence favors the academics- religion is based on faith not facts- it has its place i guess but ill go with science nearly every time- because scientists admit mistakes- religions dont since they say they are the word of god who is infallble- pretty convienent to avoid skepticism! thanks for the debate!
For anyone curious observers out there, go back 2 or 3 pages where I've provided supporting evidence, from the egyptian texts) for the Horus claims regarding his 3 day entombment, the Star in the East (Sirius) at his birth, the virgin birth. If you need anything additional or more concrete just PM me.
@wittenbergdoor [Your own words] "You need more than this to demonstrate a clear link between jesus and horus."
Only by the standards of a desperate christian either in denial or whose pride has just sunk lower than the Titanic. Next you'll tell me that you're not a christian and that I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover XD
In Chapter 5 of the Book of Gates, Horus is mentioned as having ANOTHER group of 12 in his service, to whom he tells "Live delicatley on the BREAD of HU, and drink ye the Ale of Maat".The ale is later referred to as the "Tchersert Drink" which translates to "Divine Drink".
This concept is reworked in the NT when jesus, at the Eucharist, offers his 12 followers his body in the form of BREAD and his divine blood in the form of WINE
The 12 gods say unto Ra-Horakty: -- "Immerse thyself, O Ra/Horus, in the holy lake, wherein the lord of the gods immersed himself, whereunto the souls of the dead approach not; this is what thou has commanded. O KHUTI...Thier food consisteth of -----BREAD...thier vessels are filled with WINE-----"
The Book of Gates states: The 12 worshippers of Ra/Horus who are at Peace...They who praised Ra/Horus upon Earth...They who spoke Truth upon Earth (On Ra/Horus' behalf)...They who uttered words of power(EXORCISM) against apep (evil serpent spirit)"
In ancient egyptian art (and symbology), the egyptian CROSS (Ankh) was combined with the Djed Pillar (Osiris' tomb). The imagery of this combination shows Horus' arms outstretched from the CROSS with two Meri's (Isis and Nephtys) at the base of the figure, just like the two Mary's at the feet of jesus on the cross.
"I, jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright ---MORNING STAR--
Egyptian Book of the Dead Chapter 109 "I know the souls of the easterners, they are Horakhty (horus of the horizons), the sun calf, and the ---MORNING STAR--
Journal of Near Eastern Studies Ro Faulkner Pyramid Texts "O Morning Star, Horus of the Dlet, divine falcon, widwid-bird whom the sky bore..."
@teched246 And who cares if morning star was originally an Egyptian designation. What would that even mean? Son of Man was a Semitic expression. So what? Deities were frequently called by titles that other deities originally bore. Who cares?
@teched246 And it's not as if Morning Star is such a unique designation, anyway. You need more than this to demonstrate a clear link between Jesus and Horus.
The egyptians deified the sun as three different gods -- Osiris, the Father, Horus, the Son, and Ra, the Highest Sun -- each corresponding to at least on of it's 3 key positions throughout the day. Osiris represented the *setting* sun and is reborn as Horus the *rising* sun. Ra, who alone represented the *mid-day* sun, completes the trinity as "Ra-Horakty" (translates to "Ra who is Horus of the Two Horizons") the conflation of all three gods and positions of the sun.
According to the Ikhernofret Stela (2000BC), Osiris' Death and Resurrection was celebrated in a 5 day festival known as the "Passion Plays". He is entombed on the 2nd day, and remains so until the 4th day (3 DAYS). Afterwards -- on the 5th day -- he is reborn AT DAWN.
This is why Horus represented the sun's *rising* position, whereas Osiris represented the sun's *setting* position. Horus is symbolic of Osiris' rebirth/resurrection AT DAWN.
Note: Again, in the Book of Gates Ra is Ra-Horakty (Ra who is Horus of the two Horizons: the sun travelling from one horizon to the other.)
The 12 gods say unto Ra/Horus: -- "Immerse thyself, O Ra, in the holy lake, wherein the lord of the gods immersed himself, whereunto the souls of the dead approach not; this is what thou has commanded. O KHUTI...Thier food consisteth of -----BREAD...thier vessels are filled with WINE------"
In Chapter 5 of the Book of Gates, Horus is mentioned as having ANOTHER group of 12 in his service, to whom he tells "Live delicatley on the BREAD of HU, and drink ye the Ale of Maat". This ale is later referred to as the "Tchesert Drink" which translates to "Divine Drink".
This concept is reworked in the NT when jesus, at the Eucharist, offers the 12 apostles his body in the form of BREAD and his divine blood in the form of WINE.
The Book of Gates Chapter 3 also states that these 12 worshippers of Ra/Horus who spread Truth upon Earth on his behalf, ALSO exorcised unclean spirits: "They who uttered words of power against Apep (and unclean evil spirits)."
jesus' 12 followers are referred to as "apostles". An apostle is one sent forth as a messenger; one SPREADING TRUTH. According to Matthew 10:1, jesus' apostles also exorcised unclean evil spirits.

UncutEdge 2 months ago
@UncutEdge yeah Jesus was sent by god to be tortured and die so that he could save us from god himself, because otherwise god would have had everyone burn for eternity. Yeah! That makes a lot of sense
gambitx4000 2 months ago
@gambitx4000 when God originally made man, the Bible says he was a perfect being he did not feel tempations or committed sins because God had provided everything. Satan a cast out angel from heaven was jealous of man and decided to make hime sin, since God is holy, when man sinned we were taken away from grace. The sacrifice Jesus did by being perfect and never sinning and being wrongfully punished gave way for people like you and me being able to recieve redemption even though we are sinners.
UncutEdge 2 months ago
hell was not made for people, it was made for the devil and his demons but since we are sinners and the Bible states that the price of sin is death we are condemned to the same fate.God sent his only son Jesus to live among us, face the same things we do and to overcome them and die an unjustful death so we could have the possibility of reaching Heaven. The choice is ours, either you choose to believe or not, God gives us the choice. I chose to believe and accept Jesus as my saviour.
UncutEdge 2 months ago
@UncutEdge Yeah, the bible says that, and it also says that the earth is flat.
Daniel 4:11 "The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH" (How could one tree be seen by all the Earth if they knew the Earth was round.)
Job 38: 14 "The earth takes shape like clay under a seal" (clay under a seal is flat)
ishaan212 2 months ago
@ishaan212 Those passages are quite metaphorical. The Old Testament as a whole makes use of figurative language. Regardless of your views of the texts' significance/purpose, I don't think it's entirely wise to make judgements about their knowledge of the earth's shape based upon the text.
wildstyle2192 2 months ago
@wildstyle2192 In that case, could you please explain to me the metaphor behind "the earth takes the shape of clay under a seal" (flat)? It doesn't really leave much to interpretation.
ishaan212 2 months ago
@ishaan212 It's important to look at the preceding verses. It's full of figurative language, which is mostly about buildings (flat surfaces and 3D objects). It talks about the earth's "dimensions," "foundation," and even its "cornerstone." It also talks about the clouds' "garments" and the "doors" of the sea. The clay under the seal is simply a continuance of the extended metaphor of the earth being God's creation.
wildstyle2192 2 months ago
@ishaan212 well its funny you mention those verses I actually read those about a week ago. In Daniel 4:11, Daniel was interpreting king Nebuchandnezzars dream and the dream was about how he was going to lose his mind and be humbled by God for being so arrogant, the text is about a dream it was not meant to be taken in literal terms, dreams never do, and in Job that verse is simply reffering to Jobs lands not the entire planet, you have to read the context not just a single verse. read the books

CANABALISTIC999 3 months ago
@CANABALISTIC999 I'm a religious parasite, ugh, ok, let me try and not respond with hate, like you did, let me just reply that Horus, according to the book of the dead, which, of course, predates Jesus. So, I don't know what the heck you studied, but it sure wasn't egyptian so please, stop lying, it makes you look as retarded as there ppl.

runemaster123654 3 months ago
@runemaster123654 well put, the church of any and all religions is a serious problem they ask for donations even from those who cant afford it and they KNOW WHO THOSE PEOPLE ARE. The catholic and Mormon churches use those donations to pull political bills (ala Prop 8). Not to mention the churches brought about the crusades, spanish inquisition, witch burning's, and many other horrific events. After all of this anything that didnt have this massive brainless following would have been destroyed.
CANABALISTIC999 3 months ago
@CANABALISTIC999 And if you believe in Horus, I don't hate you, you have your choice to believe in the Lord of the Dead. But please, don't make the assumption that just because it uses complex words like the bible they're the same. Ppl that come up with this combine Horus with Osiris, with Ra, then make up a few extra stuff that's not even in the Hymn to Osiris, then combine it with literature from the early 1800-1900, then, they get to these conclusions. Please explain to me, how is that right?
CrippledKnight 3 months ago

Here is some commentary on the "conception of Horus" from various Egyptian scholars:

Where are his sources? Dec 25th is irrelevant. It's not in the Bible. Horus wasn't born to a virgin. Read the story. Does the sound like a virgin birth? It's a stretch. Horus baptized? Again, that's taking Christianity's definition of baptism and then manipulating it to fit with Horus. Baptism has no roots in Ancient Egypt. Tsk tsk.

After the 3 days are up, he is reborn/resurrected at dawn, as Horus, the rising sun.
teched246 11 months ago 4
@wittenbergdoor
"Paul places jesus' crucifixion under the broader category of what it means to be hung from a tree" ....Exactly, crucifixion meant other things.
teched246 11 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@teched246 The problem with this reasoning is that these parallels can only be presented in the broadest possible categories: Betrayal, 3 day burial and resurrection (where is this even attested?), 12 followers, crucifixion that really isn't crucifixion. And no, Gal 3:13 is not proof that "crucifixion meant other things." I can't even see the logic in this. Paul referred to a literal crucifixion as a hanging on a tree, not to hanging on a tree as crucifixion. There is a HUGE difference.
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenb horus spectacled on a Cross/Tree while jesus is spectacled on a Cross/Tree is no accident. Neither is the fact that horus had 12 followers who exorcised a serpent spirit on his behalf, as well as spread truth and recieved bread and wine. The 3 day entombment of Osiris during the 5 day Passion Plays of Osiris is a dead give away (See Ikhernofret Stela translated by Richard H Wilkinson and other scholars -- not the 4 part format).
Remember to recycle your bible when discarding it.
teched246 11 months ago
@teched246 You're aware, aren't you, that Osiris' body is moved from the temple on the second day, and that he's raised on the fifth. How is this three days?
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenbergdoor Osiris is taken from his temple to his tomb on the 2nd Day and remains in it until the 4th day...
2nd Day, 3rd Day, 4th Day -- 3 Days
On the 5th Day he is reborn immediatley at dawn as the rising sun (Horus).
teched246 11 months ago
@teched246 Exactly. Horus: Dead on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, reborn on the 5th--dead three days, raised on the fourth. Jesus: Dead on Friday and Saturday, resurrected on Sunday--dead two days, raised on the third. Don't try to fudge this by saying that Horus "is reborn immediately at dawn" on the 5th day. THAT IS A REBIRTH ON THE FOURTH DAY.
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenbergdoor No, Osiris is *entombed* -- not dead -- for 3 days (2nd Day, 3rd Day, 4th Day of the festival) and is reborn/resurrected at dawn on the last day of the festival (5th Day).
teched246 11 months ago
@teched246 Okay, so he's not dead, he's entombed for three days and reborn on the fourth. So it's an even lousier parallel.
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenbergdoor When the authors of the OT spoke of the 3 day entombment, they specifically stated that the son of man would be in the tomb for 3 whole days and resurrected immediatley after. This is because Osiris was in the tomb for 3 days and reborn/resurrected immediatley after. It is not my problem that the authors of the NT are bad mathematicians.
All in all, the concept is egyptian in origin. Nit picking at trivialities is all you have left.
teched246 11 months ago
@teched246 Basically, the argument is as follows: Horus was crucified and raised from the dead on the third day. But it isn’t really Horus, it’s Osiris. And he’s not really crucified, he’s just “spectacled on a tree.” And he’s not really dead, he’s just "entombed" in a tree. And this didn’t really happen on the third day, it happened on the fourth, but don’t worry, it was just the dawn of the fourth day. The logic is piercing.
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenbergdoor The argument, if you listen to Zeitgeist carefully, was that Horus was buried for 3 days and was resurrected immediatley after, which is exactly what the OT foretells of the son of man. The egyptians considered Horus the son as also being father, Osiris e.g Horakty (Horus of the two Horizons, rising sun and setting sun).
Any discrepancies between the OT and NT only shows how false the bible is in it's claims.
teched246 11 months ago
@teched246 Where in the OT does it say that the Son of Man will be in the tomb for 3 days and will be resurrected immediately after? And if Zeitgeist (he he) claims that "Horus was buried for three days and was resurrected immediately after," then at least it has one thing right--except for the fact that he's not buried, he's trapped in a coffin that's encased in a tree. Oh yeah, we're calling that "entombment." The problem is that in the Bible Jesus is resurrected on the 3rd day, not the 4th.
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@teched246 Can you provide links to an ancient, original Egyptian source that verifies your claims about Horus. Not some book written by a supposed "scholar." If not, then that should tell you something..
wildstyle2192 9 months ago
@teched246 And with regard to the alleged 12 disciples parallel--doesn't it make much more sense to say that Jesus chose 12 disciples to correspond with the 12 tribes of Israel? Not only does the New Testament make this connection (Rev 21:12-14), but it is actually part of the Jewish culture out of which early Christianity arose?
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenbergdoor According to the Ikhernofret Stela, after Osiris is entombed for 3 days during the Passion Plays, he is resurrected/reborn (reborn as Horus) at dawn the next day in a ritual known as the "Raising of the Djed Pillar".

@wittenbergdoor

"Legend of Osiris" by Plutarch
"Isis learned that the chest had been carried out by the sea to Byblos, where it had been gently laid by the waves among the branches of a tamarisk tree, which in a very short time had grown to a magnificent size and had enclosed the chest within it's TRUNK. The King of the country, admiring the TREE, cut it down and made a PILLAR for the roof of his house of that part which contained the BODY OF OSIRIS."
teched246 11 months ago
@wittenberdoor The Djed Pillar, in one of it's aspects, represents the spine of the bull (Osiris). However, in Utterances 574 of the book of the dead, Osiris becomes entombed within the tree trunk which is then identified as the Djed Pillar. This is in concordance with Plutarch's account, "The Legend of Osiris" in which he details the events following Osiris death, specifically stating that Osiris was entombed within the Djed Pillar.
teched246 11 months ago
@teched246 Concerning the Djed pillar--so Set tricks Osiris to get into a coffin, seals the coffin closed, throws it into the river, the coffin is recovered by Isis at Byblos, and a tree grows around it, which is symbolized by the Djed pillar. Oh my God, you're right! This sounds EXACTLY like the biblical account of Jesus' burial and resurrection!! ;) Can't you see how ridiculous this is?
wittenbergdoor 11 months ago
@wittenbergdoor but cant you see the basic idea is the same- every religion takes a common theme and makes it their own- the fundmentals however are linked by similiarity- the bible ws written during a time when the authors grabbed bits of this and bits of that to tell a story- a little history some myths some made up bs and simple truths!
salvadory 7 months ago
@salvadory First, there is the question of the data itself. Are these legitimate parallels? Moreover, how do we define fundamentals? And even if some fundamentals are similar, what follows? Let's not forget the immense differences between different religious ideologies. AND consider that many of the details cited by Acharya et al are peripheral and isolated. One of the greatest weaknesses of all this is that there is no plausible mechanism for the transmission of many rather esoteric traditions.
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@wittenbergdoor use all the big intelligent words you want- it takes just simple common sense and simple understanding of mythology to see the bible is a hodge podge mix of various prior religions myths etc! Its also very clear that the savior and messiah stories existed many centuries before christ- as many of the bibles big stories like the flood- which dates back to sumerian myths-!
salvadory 7 months ago
@salvadory This is exactly what I'm talking about. "Savior and messiah stories" is waaay to vague of a description. Every story that has a hero is a "savior messiah story"! This is parallelomania--seeing parallels where they don't exist. If you're defining the terms like that, of course you're going to find parallels. As for the flood, if such an event did indeed happen, why would it be surprising that various cultures preserve garbled remembrances of it?
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@wittenbergdoor its obvious you are a bible believer so no amount of "data "will shake your opinion- there is no evidence for a worldwide flood so all the stories in the world whether they parrallel or not mean nothing- what they clearly mean is everyone has great localized floods - it happens everywhere so ofcourse every culture has a story- flooding occurs everywhere including in the middle east! The chinese also have ancient flood stories- they see some of the worlds worst flooding!!
salvadory 7 months ago
@salvadory Nice dodge. Stay on track. My point in posting comments on this video is to comment on how I think that this kind of speculation regarding parallels to Jesus is shoddy scholarship at best, and yet it's paraded by Bill Maher who likes to present himself as an informed, learned individual. Regardless, does the biblical story require us to understand Noah's flood as a global flood? The "world," for many ancient peoples, spanned only a limited amount of known territory.
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@wittenbergdoor thats exactly my point- as if your a person 5000 years ago whos knowledge of the world is the five miles around you and it floods- you assume the whole world has flooded because in essence "your little world" is flooded! There are many renowned historians and experts on biblical study as well as people like joseph cambell who was in fact the the leading figure in mythology study who point out these arguments- not just somewhat intelligent tv show hosts- !
salvadory 7 months ago
@salvadory I agree (except for the 5 mile part ;). But so what? Why does the flood need to be global? And so what if Cambell believed these things? That doesn't make them true. Just because we can imagine connections between various myths does not mean those connections are true. And even if connections are really there, there is more than one way to interpret the evidence.
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@wittenbergdoor the bible flood story is global so if it wasnt global which science has all but proved it wasnt then the bible is wrong ! the flood stories are all from different eras- so its clear they were seperate events! Yes campbells belief isnt absolute but it makes far more sense than the story of noah or the other flood myths- just as talking snakes and jonah the whale clearly should make the intelligent part of you question these obvious fairytales-
salvadory 7 months ago
@salvadory How do you know that the biblical flood story is global?
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@salvadory And at any rate, the issue raised in this video isn't Jonah, the flood, or talking snakes--it's Jesus. The central point of Christian theology is the gospel. The claim is that the gospel is a recycled myth. I'm saying it's not. All these other stories are a different discussion. Not that I'm not happy to dialogue about these, but these are peripheral issues, they have little to do with the core of the Christian faith, and they're not the topic raised in this video.
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@wittenbergdoor ok i admit i got off topic slightly- and im sorry for that but ill stick by the clear simple common themes that the christ savior myth echoes of previous saviour myths from all around the world and the historical and educated arguments hold far more water than christian claims-!
salvadory 7 months ago
@salvadory no prob--that always happens with utube discussions. Nothing more to really add here, except that there are "historical and educated arguments" on both sides here, my friend. Just because someone is skeptical of Christianity does not mean that their arguments are warranted. Read my dialogue with teched246, if you like, and you may see what I mean. There just isn't enough [good] evidence to support the whole history of religions/recycled mythology position.
wittenbergdoor 7 months ago
@wittenbergdoor thanks id still say the evidence favors the academics- religion is based on faith not facts- it has its place i guess but ill go with science nearly every time- because scientists admit mistakes- religions dont since they say they are the word of god who is infallble- pretty convienent to avoid skepticism! thanks for the debate!

Horus: Trinity
The egyptians deified the sun as three different gods -- Osiris, the Father, Horus, the Son, and Ra, the Highest Sun -- each corresponding to at least on of it's 3 key positions throughout the day. Osiris represented the *setting* sun and is reborn as Horus the *rising* sun. Ra, who alone represented the *mid-day* sun, completes the trinity as "Ra-Horakty" (translates to "Ra who is Horus of the Two Horizons") the conflation of all three gods and positions of the sun.
teched246 11 months ago
Horus: 3 Day Entombment and Resurrection
According to the Ikhernofret Stela (2000BC), Osiris' Death and Resurrection was celebrated in a 5 day festival known as the "Passion Plays". He is entombed on the 2nd day, and remains so until the 4th day (3 DAYS). Afterwards -- on the 5th day -- he is reborn AT DAWN.
This is why Horus represented the sun's *rising* position, whereas Osiris represented the sun's *setting* position. Horus is symbolic of Osiris' rebirth/resurrection AT DAWN.

Horus: 12 Apostles Con't (1)
The Book of Gates Chapter 3 also states that these 12 worshippers of Ra/Horus who spread Truth upon Earth on his behalf, ALSO exorcised unclean spirits: "They who uttered words of power against Apep (and unclean evil spirits)."
jesus' 12 followers are referred to as "apostles". An apostle is one sent forth as a messenger; one SPREADING TRUTH. According to Matthew 10:1, jesus' apostles also exorcised unclean evil spirits.
