My uncle actually wrote this song... (Ed Nix from GA)... One of his funnier songs from the era. He passed away a couple of years ago now and was wanting to complete a song/concept entitled the "Bottom Line"... I'm workin on it...
Great song. reminds me of my 2nd ex wife. She took off with a Marine and the checkbook. I went to a bar that night and played this song until closiing then went home with a drunk barfly. Had to take out a loan to paythe mortgage but it was worth it. Last I heard, her new (3rd) husband used to beat her regularly.- poetic justice.
I finally got to where I told my ex she looked better with her ass going out the door than she did with her face coming in the door!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love all of these old songs and Roy Clark is certainly one of the all time greats. If records expired after 10 years and you couldn't listen to them anymore, I just wouldn't listen to anything today because there would be no music left.
In 1973 I dropped my 2nd. wife at a Greyhound station with her suitcase in Chattanooga, turned around, drove back to Dunlap, smoked a doob, drank a pint of JD, never saw her again, and hope to God I never do She just didn't like my lifestyle back then, and I didn't like the boyfriend she took up with. I really love this song!
Roy Clark was one of the greats. I saw him perform when I was maybe seven years old. He made me laugh even though I didn't understand most of what he said. Great song too. Thanks for putting this up, it brings back some good memories.
Isn't this a wonderul song? It perfectly captures the time my ex-wife left me, while I was in the hospital. It's as though Roy knew her personally. In my version I sing "Thank god and Southwest Airlines you're gone".
My husband and my first date was to a Roy Clark concert . We both had exs and when he sang this, it immediatly became "our song". We've now been married 38 years, have 3 sons and 5 grandsons.
Last night, I was in a "Hee Haw" themed show (a condensed version of the show I was in this past spring), and the guy who played Roy Clark sang this (it was a replacement for our Lulu singing "Shopping List", since the lady couldn't be there), and at the end of the song, the guy's wife walked across the stage with a penciled sign that read "SEE YOU AT HOME, I MISSED THE BUS".
Just saw Roy Clark yesterday. He sang this tune and he still sounds great. It was a great fathers day performance, he even brought an 11 year fiddle champion up from the audience to play with him.
I sent a copy of this song in one of those recordable greeting cards to my ex when our divorce was final (and what a glorious day that was!!). Come to think of it, she never said thank you!!
If you want some very early Roy Clark when he was still just a studio talent check out The Astounding 12 String Guitar of Glen Campbell, his first album. Roy really shines on The Ballard of Jed Clampett playing banjo (Search You Tube.) It also shows that Glen can handle a guitar.
I like Roy and Itzak Pearlman on the Odd Couple episode. Roy Clark is a concert violinist as is Pearlman. Roy played Turkey in the Straw and Itzahk ask Roy "How much do you make?" Roy says," XX Million dollars" and Pearlman says, "Catchy tune how'd that go again?" I have an instrument that was on stage with Roy Clark, Merle Travis, and Buddy Emmons on the same show played buy Bobbey Garret. These guys fingernail clipping have more talent than 95% of today's "artists" trying to play music.
How do we let ourselves get roped into these kinds of things? Oh, wait. I think I know. If we weren't all horndogs, this kinda shite wouldn't happen so often. We gotta learn to think with the big head. Cause ya can't live withem, & ya can't killem.
You can get rid of the "pops and clicks" on the vinyl, you know? Records don't magically grow stalagmites over the years, that sound is dirt. Clean your records and they'll sound like new. I recommend the Disc Doctor record cleaning kit, the brushes and fluid work great.
I love the pops and clicks....After a couple of years as a rock and roll DJ
I landed at a country station Turntables and a building (yes a building) full of albums and singles going back to the 1940's Urban Cowboy had come out a year before and I was at home. The format was 3Solid Gold cuts per hour. I was a kid from Long Island and found out that fans of country music are a loyal bunch. Got to meet Clark twice when his fished Lake Okeechobee. I found out that he was a true superpicker
love this song. had it on 8 track. i could hit the 'skip' button just after the song ended, and be back at the start for this one again. i'd play it over and over again.. thanks
If they say Toby Keith's "How do you like me now" is the best F-you song ever written, then this has to be the best "Kiss my ass" song ever written and recorded!!! LOL
@pro3tlb Mother in laws are good for that............LMAO...........I can think of a Mother in Law I would like to have thrown a coffee mug at...........
@pro3tlb ha, you sound like my dad! during and after divorce he has mentioned this song to me so many times! thanks for bringing back a funny and loved memory! :o)
Any man who's ever had a girlfriend, mistress, wife etc can all relate to this song.In fact you will eventually think this about all of them. In the beginning of the relationship you think they're angels but in the end you " thank god and greyhound they're gone". hahahhahah
@loganachilles1982 I had a couple of jerk MEN that come to mind myself.Same feeling at the end of it,too.Amazing.we really aren't all THAT different .
My girlfriend doesn't know too much about Roy Clark so today when I was singing this song in the shower, she took it to heart and thought I was singing about her. It almost started a real fight until I had her listen to this video. Thank God You had it posted here. :-)
When I out my ex-wife on a greyhound bus back home ( I know I should have sprung for Delta, but she is an EX) , I had to buy the song for my IPOD and play it as I left the station parking lot.
i think he told a comedy show story called "the great duck hunt". Does anyone know if it was him or a sound-alike? I have a copy on a recorded 8-track but it is not written on it who it was.
While visiting Branson awhile back on vacation, I was fortunate enough to sit in the Roy Clark celebrity theater and see this legendery man perform on stage. This was the first song that he sang after a little introduction at the beginning. I must say it, this was one of the best concerts LIVE i've ever been to IN MY LIFE!!! Thanks Mr Clark for a wonderful show!!! You're the greatest Roy:):):):)
Thanx for posting this song. It was written by my brother Larry Kingston who passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. Its great to see his music lives on and is still being enjoyed by the Country fans. (Ken)
As I was rolling out of the courthouse parking lot, seconds after my divorce, I popped this in the tape player full blast and rolled down the street. FREEDOM...and Roy sings it soooooooo well.
OH MY GAWD!!! I first heard this song by Roy over 30 years ago. And here I am today, laughing so hard I am crying! Thanks, Wilburscott, and I don't give a hoot about the pops and clicks. This is one of the funniest songs recorded. Ever.
Thanks for posting! I remember my mom saying that line when company would leave, it was years before I understood where she got the line and what it meant. Didnt know she was referring to a bus! LOL

Roy still IS one of the greats. Still doing shows in Branson, last I heard. He's one of the finest guitarists I've ever laid eyes on.
And this song, is solid GOLD... right there with "Yesterday When I Was Young", and Malaguena, which is just an amazing song to watch him play.
