Dan and Spooner came on my radio show in Adelaide they were two of the finest people I have ever met. So much humility and so much soul...god bless them and their sublime music
I worked with Spooner on CSNY Freedom of Speech Tour - He & his wife are some of the nicest people i have ever had the pleasure to meet. For the record yes he wrote this song & many others.
I'm a personal friend of Dan Penn. He and Spooner wrote I'm Your Puppet. Alex Childress was the lead vocal on the Box Tops hit The Letter, of which Dan was the producer!
I take case rested to mean no further challanges to my documentation as to the writers of I'm Your Puppet. other side bars still remain, but for the main trial I accept your acknowledgement I am correct and no further contest on the main issure will be put forth.
They performed this at the Ponderosa Stomp just like this. It's been stuck in my head ever since. Now I can see it again. Thanks for posting. Spooner has a really great style.
The context of Muscle Shoals/Stax was a place where music could be made and recorded by black and white musicians who dug each others playing; they could get off the street and leave the segregation behind. It's ironic that someone is trying to stoke all that up in association with music that was the antithesis of racism.
All of this is now shoved aside, as Oldham has been inducted into the RRHOF, and it will all be part of the official history.
DJ, why don't you get that big fucking chip off your shoulder and go make some music instead?
And if you do, try not to worry about the skin thing, it eats up too many creative juices and it works against that whole "music is the universal language" thing.
I believe Spooner Oldham, the other fellow in vid, wrote the song not Penn who is singing here. Some also think Dan Penn is the lead in most all of the Box Tops hits.
