the truck looks fuckin awsome. the way u said about the lines r u going with really thin paint or somewhat thick. e-mail lickmyfire05@aol.com thanks fuck the haters
Hey Mike i really admire your work. I have a favor to ask, if you could give me some advice on my truck i'd appreciate it. I have an s-10 with a surface rusted hood/tailgate and rust spots on the side. most of the original blue paint has chipped off. If you could hit me back with a comment or message on the steps you take from start to finish, not in detail but broad steps. like what you buy, how you sand, what grit, what method. for 50 bucks it looks better than a 400+ maaco job! a decent one
@kellontop I didnt tape it off on purpose, they are from 1988 and not shiny and clear, makes me have to wetsand them smooth and polish em again, now they look brand new
@kellontop That isnt no shit!!!Or tape up a fucking emblem. talk about lazy nigger work. I would rather leave it, and drive it fadded then to make it shiny and fucked up.He says he did it on purpose lol. hell for $40.00 you can buy new ones. This hack has nothing, I repeat Nothing better to do. His wife needs to put her foot up his ass big time.
@Buckshot3715 I had no set amount, I listened to other peoples recommendations, then went with my own. I took a bucket, poured the entire quart of paint in, then added mineral spirits with a wisk in a drill mixing the paint and thinner. I knew the paint had enough spirits and was ready to roll when looking in the bucket, the millions of bubbles created with the drill and wisk dissapeared almost immediately after stopping the drill. Within 2-3 seconds. Done...start rollin' :)
@gringo406 I take back that comment, you need to experiment with thinning it out before you spray duplicolor, its too thick from the "ready to spray" can, and will leave you loads of orange peel, gotta thin it down then it would work ok
one more quick question. does the more coats mean the more glossy it gets? because i made my hood look decent at one coat, but now its crappy again and i cant get it back...
i have a 96 civic that i want to only paint the hood, roof and trunk black after doing the roll on paint do i have to clear it if so how would i do that???????
im pretty sure my mineral spirits i used is why mine doesnt make the mirror. it is almost exactly like milk and is called Green Klean Strip Mineral Spirits. also, if i got some scratches on it now, how do i get them out? i tried sanding them out with 2000 grit but they still dont go away. will my ultimate compound make them go awaY?
@jschristian44 I only used clear mineral spirits not the milky stuff, I bought some of that but when I opened it I said......gloss black + milky white shit = might not work too good. so I went and used the clear and it worked perfect. Depends on how deep the scratches are. Polishing compound will take out 2000 grit scratches no problembut it wont take out deep scratches, go with rubbing compound then polishing compound
yeah thats what i did, rubbing then polishing. i just got some meguiars ultimate compound so i will work that in with my buffer after i get a decent coat of the black. the mineral spirits actually didn't make look bad, it just isnt clear...i dont think they would make it if didnt do the same thing as the other kinds, because who wants a different color after adding mineral spirits. and it does say for thinning paint on the container. i am getting decent results with roller.
when you use polishing compound, do you do it until it flakes off or until its rubbed in like suntan lotion on skin? how many times before you see shine, because i know one pass it makes it look pretty dull. how do you hold the buffer, because i have a hand held one not one on a stick. thanks!
@jschristian44 I let the rotary buffer make contact between the 12 and 4 oclock position on vertical panels use up and down on the whole panel then back and forth, keep polishing it out and youll get the shine
watching you makes me want to continuemy project, i have painted and cleared my car with hvlp gun but i have some bubbles in clear can i just 1000, 1500, than 2000 wet sand it and polish with meguilars polish?? will it make it shine?
@zxvcw I use only clear mineral spirits to cut it, I have tried other thinners and that works the best. You could shoot it very easily with a spray gun, just have to experiment for the best mix, and for how thick it lays down the paint
@zxvcw you could probably do the whole truck with 2-3 quarts with equal amouts of mineral spirits I just finished the hood today polished it out that was the hardest part of the truck to do and make look good
Looks great! I was also thinking of painting directly on epoxy resin. You said it doesnt like to stick to fiberglass, did you roll directly onto the fiberglass resin ? Was it epoxy resin or polyester with the glass? Also how has the paint held up to the UV rays or did you spray it with a clear coat.
@coconut5555 it does like fiberglass, but I had a couple of small dime sized spots where I must have not cleaned good enough, the old paint was chipped off and the glaff probably got wet, might have had a small bit of mold growth. Thats a great idea with the resin, I have tons of that I should have done that first, wel, live and learn :)
I plan to paint my 97 Thunderbird like this. Any advice on the plastic/fiberglass parts? My Tbird's bumpers are molded plastic and match the rest of the car. Also do you know anything about Rustoleums clear enamel? Think coats of that over the $50 paint job would give it a close to factory look?
if the parts are not bare fiberglass, and they still have paint, just scratch it and paint. if the parts are bare fiberglass use a good primer. I havent tried the clear but i think i will just for shits and giggles. When the truck panels are cleaned and waxed right now it looks better than factory. The clear is worth a shot for protection I'll try it and let u know.
@pixelbat hey im doing this to my mustang right now and its mostly fiberglass too... the rustoleum has a built in flex agent so it goes over fiberglass very well. If you want proof roll on a few coats onto some old plastic kids toy then bend it the paint bends with the plastic...
@DaBluedude100 just have to make sure the fiberglass never got wet if it was exposed for a long time, if it did, get some wax releasing agent for fiberglass before painting, i ran into that issue in one small spot on my rear fender
You know I used to look down on people that did these low budget paint jobs until a friend of mine painted his camaro with spray cans. I gotta tell yeah he suprised the hell out of me. Your right about taking your time because its all about good prep. Good job by the way.
so now that i painted and let the paint harden, i stared to cut and buff the car! IT LOOKS AWESOME. cant believe that 22 dollars worth of rustoleum and thinner got it done!
Do you use spray cans?
JimmyEG1 3 days ago
@JimmyEG1 nope I used quarts, thinnied out and a super fine foam roller for each coat.
