    phenomenal!!!

  • boring.....

  • @MrPocketGroover U r the best guitarist in the world asshole !

  • ahh such control, and a swish knocker, i want one! amazing drumming technique and style

  • PETEEER ;)

  • dat jazz

  • What is this ride cymbal?

  • @MrBrunodegois Zildjian constantinople ride and Zildjian left side ride

  • @MrBrunodegois K Constantinople Med Thin High Ride

  • 3:09... I've been moving that phrase of nine around for about a month now! I was wondering where I first heard it, maybe it was Peter...

  • I have four words for you.........BRILLIANT

  • You're a genius Mister Erskine !

  • GROOVE!

  • This is chops, its just different.

  • Does anyone know what song this is?

  • Hey, piece of cake!

  • i love it your playing

  • the greatest!!!!

  • Dido guys

  • Everybody's talkin' about overplaying here... Define it to me. Tell me why u think there is such a thing as "overplaying".

  • @jepa12 ... anything that is musically innapropriate or has a " look at what i can do " quality to it is overplaying

  • @sweetfly66

Whenever you play an instrument you are showing what you can play.

No matter what you play. And you can't say that something is "innapropriate" because that,

my friend, is a matter of opinion.

Someone could say that Peter overplays and you would not agree with him.

    Opinions.

  • @jepa12 ... that is not true .... for example , if the song is a slow ballad and i start playing loud , syncopated double bass in it , would that not be considered innapropriate ...of course it would ... its just a basic musical fact ... some things just dont fit with other things ... as far as " look what i can do " ..... there is a difference between performing and showing off innapropriately ... if you choose to ignore this fact , you do so at your own musical and professional risk .

  • @sweetfly66

Still, what fits with what is also a matter of opinion.

And if you can do something well, why not show it?

But man drums are kewl :D

  • @jepa12 ... well then we agree ..... " what fits " .... and if you believe that some things do fit , then you have to agree that some things dont fit and are thus innapropriate .

  • @sweetfly66

But that is still a matter of opinion, you can't argue with that. It just is.

  • @jepa12 ..... " matter of opinion " is a copout ...it doesnt mean anything , it doesnt support any point of view , it doesnt strengthen any argument .... its nothing but an easy way out

  • @sweetfly66

An opinion is something every single human has and they're all different.

It's not an argument or a way out, it's simply a fact.

You just can't tell someone that you think someone overplays if he doesn't think so.

Well yea, you can but it doesn't matter at all what you think if he's conserned.

  • @jepa12 ... you are wrong because there are musical standards that almost everyone adheres to in one way or the other . Its like Supreme Court Justice who said " I dont know if i can define what pornography is , but I know it when I see it " . It is the same thing with innapropriate drumming . Very difficult to define but almost everyone is in agreemant when they hear it .

  • i love how he stares down the ride cymbal. makes my day every time

  • Would anyone know where i could get some tracks like these without the set

  • @StewieDSynman ... you can get them on Peter`s web site ... he has play along material minus the drums on many of his instructional packages

  • Gracias por todo, Peter! Eres un maestro de la batería.

  • He makes all that seems to be so simple....Love him !

  • Great drummer, this is the sound of Charlie parker.

  • To 331paradiddle - DITTO! You explained it perfectly.

  • hes the man, one of fav drummers, what a dude!

  • I'm a student and, being that it's the middle of the summer, I haven't played with a big band in a while so my motivation's down a little bit. But man I tell ya, watch one video of Mr. Erskine and you want to go practice for hours.

  • soooooo good!!!

  • He supports the music perfectly and never overplays. This is a great lesson for all the drummers who think chops are everything. Not to mention you need great chops to play with this much control. Its just more subtle. His time is impeccable as well as his phrasing. We should all aspire to have this much musicality and control. Love ya Peter

  • @331paradiddle agree! musical mature chops? maybe....vs those childish showmanship ugly chops, love ya Peter too!

  • @331paradiddle Yeap this guy usually goes to my middle school and holds an assembly talking about drums almost every year. In fact, the very first assembly I saw him when I was in 8th grade Inspired me to take up drums and Ive been playing for 10 years now

  • The drumset he is using is a yamaha oak custom:)

  • @easternskys i don't think so. this set has nouveau lugs, it's rather maple custom absolute nouveau.

  • Always such a beautiful light feel on the ride. So smooth.

  • what drumset is this? i gotta know!

  • no words <3

  • best swing drummer ever. fact.

  • A truly Cat .

  • that is some solid swing...boy just sounds like the 50's all over again. How come all the music I hear this guy on is so lame?

  • the second ride he uses from 2:15 sounds like waterfall, isnt it? :}

  • @horvathazagergo Actually, I'm pretty sure that is a china with rivets. It does sound good

  • @Drumsauce136

its the swish knocker dude i have one its fearless!

  • Respond to this video...swish knocker

  • God , Peter swings his ass off. I saw him with Maynard Ferguson when first became known, then Weather Report, and Diana Krall. He is phenomonal

  • Peter Is just great man! Love that cat. A friend and I saw his clinic when I was about 16yrs old. AT the end of the show,. I had my Modern Drummer in hand for an autograph. My friend says "HE'S LEAVing...run up and get his autograph. I'm said, no maybe I should wait. Let him dry off. He said, You're going to miss it, HE"S LEAVing! So I listened to him and ran up and ask, "can please you sign this magazine for me. Man, he just glared and snapped, "yeah just GIVE me a minute! Pissed off my hero!

  • ironically all the jazz musicians i ever met were nowhere near as cool as the music they played...

  • fantastic!

  • My favorite jazz drummer----no overplaying,great chops,technique,time,the whole thing.

  • Amazing!

  • Peter Erskine looks just like my old grandpa. Holy shiznits!

  • Wow! watching the master have fun at work...loved it!

  • what ride is that?

  • @MrPearl123 I think Zildjian 20" costantinople ride

  • i wanna learn jazz so much!!

  • @StreetDrumm3r One important rule to learn jazz.... LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. Listen to everything, doesn't matter what type of music (I recommend jazz ;) ). Listen, Practice, Play.

  • Imagine meeting your new drum tutor for the first time not knowing who it was..and then PE answers the door...daunting or what!? The thing is though it looks like he has the perfect manner for a teacher....oh and a just a little bit of know how, skill and experience to go with it (!) I wonder how much he costs per hour... money well spent whatever it is I'm sure. You wouldn't have much excuse for not becoming good.

  • @elohead man you just summarized a dream i had last night (except in the dream he taught me for free, for no reason at all)

  • i've been playining for 27yrs now and consider myself a decent drummer.. anyone think it's too late for me to start learning this type of jazz?..i'm really diggin peter erskine's playing , and wish i wasn't limited technincally..he makes it look so easy and it's totally not the case..i've bluffed my way through some jazzy situations but nothing like this..this is like 40yrs of playing at least..

  • @blica1 In my humble opinion I would say that learning jazz has a great deal to do with listening. It's never too late to learn if you are passionate about it. I think most drummers who embark on learning jazz get turned off simply because they don't know where to begin or what to listen to in order to gain inspiration. Learning phrasing and how to comp the other players on the bandstand is the key. Good luck, and let me know if I can help in any way bro!

  • doesn't peter endorse sabian now ?..he's using k's here..

  • YES !!! God damn it...thats the way you do it !!!

  • He makes it look easy, but it ain't!! Erskine is one of the best big band drummers of his generation.
