@jepa12 ... that is not true .... for example , if the song is a slow ballad and i start playing loud , syncopated double bass in it , would that not be considered innapropriate ...of course it would ... its just a basic musical fact ... some things just dont fit with other things ... as far as " look what i can do " ..... there is a difference between performing and showing off innapropriately ... if you choose to ignore this fact , you do so at your own musical and professional risk .
@jepa12 ... well then we agree ..... " what fits " .... and if you believe that some things do fit , then you have to agree that some things dont fit and are thus innapropriate .
@jepa12 ..... " matter of opinion " is a copout ...it doesnt mean anything , it doesnt support any point of view , it doesnt strengthen any argument .... its nothing but an easy way out
@jepa12 ... you are wrong because there are musical standards that almost everyone adheres to in one way or the other . Its like Supreme Court Justice who said " I dont know if i can define what pornography is , but I know it when I see it " . It is the same thing with innapropriate drumming . Very difficult to define but almost everyone is in agreemant when they hear it .
I'm a student and, being that it's the middle of the summer, I haven't played with a big band in a while so my motivation's down a little bit. But man I tell ya, watch one video of Mr. Erskine and you want to go practice for hours.
He supports the music perfectly and never overplays. This is a great lesson for all the drummers who think chops are everything. Not to mention you need great chops to play with this much control. Its just more subtle. His time is impeccable as well as his phrasing. We should all aspire to have this much musicality and control. Love ya Peter
@331paradiddle Yeap this guy usually goes to my middle school and holds an assembly talking about drums almost every year. In fact, the very first assembly I saw him when I was in 8th grade Inspired me to take up drums and Ive been playing for 10 years now
Peter Is just great man! Love that cat. A friend and I saw his clinic when I was about 16yrs old. AT the end of the show,. I had my Modern Drummer in hand for an autograph. My friend says "HE'S LEAVing...run up and get his autograph. I'm said, no maybe I should wait. Let him dry off. He said, You're going to miss it, HE"S LEAVing! So I listened to him and ran up and ask, "can please you sign this magazine for me. Man, he just glared and snapped, "yeah just GIVE me a minute! Pissed off my hero!
@StreetDrumm3r One important rule to learn jazz.... LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. Listen to everything, doesn't matter what type of music (I recommend jazz ;) ). Listen, Practice, Play.
Imagine meeting your new drum tutor for the first time not knowing who it was..and then PE answers the door...daunting or what!? The thing is though it looks like he has the perfect manner for a teacher....oh and a just a little bit of know how, skill and experience to go with it (!) I wonder how much he costs per hour... money well spent whatever it is I'm sure. You wouldn't have much excuse for not becoming good.
i've been playining for 27yrs now and consider myself a decent drummer.. anyone think it's too late for me to start learning this type of jazz?..i'm really diggin peter erskine's playing , and wish i wasn't limited technincally..he makes it look so easy and it's totally not the case..i've bluffed my way through some jazzy situations but nothing like this..this is like 40yrs of playing at least..
@blica1 In my humble opinion I would say that learning jazz has a great deal to do with listening. It's never too late to learn if you are passionate about it. I think most drummers who embark on learning jazz get turned off simply because they don't know where to begin or what to listen to in order to gain inspiration. Learning phrasing and how to comp the other players on the bandstand is the key. Good luck, and let me know if I can help in any way bro!

Everybody's talkin' about overplaying here... Define it to me. Tell me why u think there is such a thing as "overplaying".
jepa12 6 months ago
@jepa12 ... anything that is musically innapropriate or has a " look at what i can do " quality to it is overplaying
sweetfly66 6 months ago
@sweetfly66
Whenever you play an instrument you are showing what you can play.
No matter what you play. And you can't say that something is "innapropriate" because that,
my friend, is a matter of opinion.
Someone could say that Peter overplays and you would not agree with him.
Opinions.

@sweetfly66
Still, what fits with what is also a matter of opinion.
And if you can do something well, why not show it?
But man drums are kewl :D

@sweetfly66
An opinion is something every single human has and they're all different.
It's not an argument or a way out, it's simply a fact.
You just can't tell someone that you think someone overplays if he doesn't think so.
Well yea, you can but it doesn't matter at all what you think if he's conserned.
