@SuperJimjoe - hmmm, the Bachmann A4 isn't quite right either. The shape of it isn't right. And this problem with the linkage only seems to affect about 50% of the models. So I would still go for the Hornby one - if you have any problems, let me know. Alternatively, if you do decide to go with the Bachmann one, then please let me know what you think.
I'd take InterCity82's Advice to go to the Hornby one, it's better all around realy. The Bachmann one is not as good in detail, or anything, the Hornby ones are mutch better.
All of the A4 Class has the Speedomiter cable, it records the speed. Some models won't have it because they are low detail and on some A4s in the LNER Garter Blue Livery you can only just see it
I'm not sure if this would have worked or not but I think you just needed to screw it back on. The Cable that broke was the Speedomiter cable. It is supposed to come as to remove the boady it needs to be removed. Also, just to let you know, my version of the locomotive is DCC Ready so yours might be two :)
that bit at the back, my mallard doesnt have that at all, its an old loco, but i cant recall any mallards having it at all. i cant even recall the real mallard having it.
Great job on the fix, but I had to laugh at "plastic firmly around" in the same sentence. Plastic and firm rarely go together in the same sentence. :)
yeah this does tend to be quite a problem, i had four Hornby A4's and this happened with two of them, and i also had a problem with the Hornby 'Sir Nigel Gresley' where one of the conrods got caught on the body as it turned a corner
Amazing loco. I picked it up last week - first I've bought since getting back into railways after nearly 20 years. The linkage on mine was fine, but it kept shorting out after only a couple of minutes. Eventually I realised the copper pins on the connection between the loco and the tender were to blame: bending them up cured it.
And yeah, she does run amazingly smoothly, thundering round corners at full speed without any derailments. The track or locos seem to have improved a lot since the 90s.
i bought the mallard todaya with my christmas money i will be doing a unboxing soon as i am only a beginner i will show a running of it but on a basic oval track love the a4's though there beauty's
I absolutely love the A4 - and as I said in another comment - I have this loco - just in Blue Livery - I think this version looks a lot better though! What a coincidence - the same thing happened to one of my GWR 1-3-0 steam locos - it jammed, but i fixed and now the front wheels have come loose and I haven't got round to fixing it yet! You'll probably see it on my new layout once I upload some videos!!! I really hope this doesn't happen to mine as it might be the name 'Falcon' at fault!
This is really good to know.. thank you very much. I do believe thats the exact same set we just bought. Was that Hornby's Limited Edition "heart of Midlothian" set? I do believe we have the falcon in our set. We also bought 6 other A4's so i'm glad i watched this to keep up on that issue.
That linkage to the A4 body shell is connected to a piece of fine wire bent to a double end pin superglued into two holes in the body. The assembly oscillates laterally thru its rotation, insufficient clearance causing it to strike the cosmetic plastic lubricator on the body shell. I have two of the Midlothian pack's "Falcon" and "Sir Nigel Gresley" LE of 2008. The problem presents on those 3 Hornby high detail A4s, valanced and naked . Inadequately pre-tested or yet addressed design flaw IMO.
@LemonyFuzzyBear - thanks! It sure is. The locos parked up in the siding are as follows... (from furthest away to closest to camera) Class 47 BR, Class 9F 'Evening Star' BR, HS4000 'Kestrel' BR, Class 57 Virgin
@FirstGreatWesternHST - lol, that's a very 'open' question lol - that would take far too long to answer for all the locos I have but the cheapest loco I have is a little Industrial loco from Hattons for £15, and the most expensive was 'The City of Manchester' (vid on my channel) at a whopping £116
@matanuialive2010 - yeah not all of them will, but a lot of them seem to have suffered from this problem. As for going slow... it could be the controller?
Right i now know that to get a bachmann a4 instead!
