  • Right i now know that to get a bachmann a4 instead!

  • @SuperJimjoe - hmmm, the Bachmann A4 isn't quite right either. The shape of it isn't right. And this problem with the linkage only seems to affect about 50% of the models. So I would still go for the Hornby one - if you have any problems, let me know. Alternatively, if you do decide to go with the Bachmann one, then please let me know what you think.

  • @InterCity82 bachmann have redesigned it's A4 and is V2 and it looks better than the old bachmann ones

  • @SuperJimjoe

I'd take InterCity82's Advice to go to the Hornby one, it's better all around realy. The Bachmann one is not as good in detail, or anything, the Hornby ones are mutch better.

  • @benjokazooie

All of the A4 Class has the Speedomiter cable, it records the speed. Some models won't have it because they are low detail and on some A4s in the LNER Garter Blue Livery you can only just see it

  • that might be what is wrong with mine but it is an old loco, and it powers from the tender.

  • @InterCity82

I'm not sure if this would have worked or not but I think you just needed to screw it back on. The Cable that broke was the Speedomiter cable. It is supposed to come as to remove the boady it needs to be removed. Also, just to let you know, my version of the locomotive is DCC Ready so yours might be two :)

  • that bit at the back, my mallard doesnt have that at all, its an old loco, but i cant recall any mallards having it at all. i cant even recall the real mallard having it.

  • Great vid

  • I have dcc mallard and its completly different motor and more detail

  • Great job on the fix, but I had to laugh at "plastic firmly around" in the same sentence. Plastic and firm rarely go together in the same sentence. :)

  • for power to the track how many do u have

    for your layout

  • yeah this does tend to be quite a problem, i had four Hornby A4's and this happened with two of them, and i also had a problem with the Hornby 'Sir Nigel Gresley' where one of the conrods got caught on the body as it turned a corner

  • ive got one .but no problems,my one is dc as well

  • same with mine

  • what company is this from?

  • @modelrailway100 - Hornby

  • ive got the Falcon as well

  • which part of the vitrains kit did you use if you can remember because mine has done the same

  • @class56jonzeyz - I'll have to check but I think it was just a small black pin made of plastic. Maybe a lamp hook or something.

  • Amazing loco. I picked it up last week - first I've bought since getting back into railways after nearly 20 years. The linkage on mine was fine, but it kept shorting out after only a couple of minutes. Eventually I realised the copper pins on the connection between the loco and the tender were to blame: bending them up cured it.

And yeah, she does run amazingly smoothly, thundering round corners at full speed without any derailments. The track or locos seem to have improved a lot since the 90s.

  • @Whiggles1 - excellent! :)

  • i bought the mallard todaya with my christmas money i will be doing a unboxing soon as i am only a beginner i will show a running of it but on a basic oval track love the a4's though there beauty's

  • mabie you should get mallard from the railroad range as they dont have the linkege at the back

  • @matanuialive2010 - I may get Mallard in time, but I'm in no immediate rush

  • ugghh mine broke down like that and has been parked in the shed ever since

  • great video

i have a similar a4 union of south africa

they are great trains and look amazing keep up the good work

  • I absolutely love the A4 - and as I said in another comment - I have this loco - just in Blue Livery - I think this version looks a lot better though! What a coincidence - the same thing happened to one of my GWR 1-3-0 steam locos - it jammed, but i fixed and now the front wheels have come loose and I haven't got round to fixing it yet! You'll probably see it on my new layout once I upload some videos!!! I really hope this doesn't happen to mine as it might be the name 'Falcon' at fault!

  • @2002And - the linkage problem seems to be synonymous with this type of loco

  • This loco would be mad dcc fitted and with sound

  • @jmsschooner - true - and it will be! with a lit firebox too

  • and is she dcc fitted

  • @jmsschooner - she currently isn't but she is DCC ready

  • can u make a vid of ure colection & what u use to fill the freight trucks

  • @superlonglegs1 - yeah sure! I'll add it to the list, so it might be a while before it gets uploaded tho

  • have you tried modifying a Low-Mac so that it can hold a camera?

That way you could run it parallel to the Loco/Train and video it!

  • @stuggit1 - we're working on somethigng much better than that! :) But it's top secret

  • are u puting a crew in the locos

  • @theshedrailway - in time possibly

  • This is really good to know.. thank you very much. I do believe thats the exact same set we just bought. Was that Hornby's Limited Edition "heart of Midlothian" set? I do believe we have the falcon in our set. We also bought 6 other A4's so i'm glad i watched this to keep up on that issue.

  • @midrange18 - it sounds like you have exactly the ssame set

  • do you own any hornby thomas trains?

  • @thebrawlinboyz - yes, Percy, Toby and Thomas

  • The Mallard broke down attempting the speed record (A4) So its real! lol But even though its real its not fun real.

  • cool love the a4s

  • I dont think that your replacement 'rod' was fat enough in the first place, that would explain why it would 'see saw' up and down.

  • @LondonMuckShifters - yes quite possibly. The important thing is the rod now moves as it should, and she has never ran better. :P)

  • @InterCity82 whats smokey joe

  • @gtasandman - the most famous 0-4-0 loco Hornby do

  • @InterCity82 ok

  • The Smokey Joe set was my first ever!

  • @stuggit1 - nice loco :) - classic!

  • Have you got Smokey Joe? I have

  • @MrScotsman82 - no, but I've always wanted one :)

  • when it becomes available, could you do a review for 2509 Silver Link, if you buy it that is?

  • @irwellsteam - there are no plans to review that loco as yet but you never know! :)

  • you should get the flying scotsman

  • @DaRkCaBoOdLe137 - that loco is popular enough without it needing me to have a look at it. :)

  • I have had that problem with my A4 Mallard but I fixed it with the exact same way!

  • @ExploreHornby32 - good on that man :)

  • That linkage to the A4 body shell is connected to a piece of fine wire bent to a double end pin superglued into two holes in the body. The assembly oscillates laterally thru its rotation, insufficient clearance causing it to strike the cosmetic plastic lubricator on the body shell. I have two of the Midlothian pack's "Falcon" and "Sir Nigel Gresley" LE of 2008. The problem presents on those 3 Hornby high detail A4s, valanced and naked . Inadequately pre-tested or yet addressed design flaw IMO.

  • @soaringstar - yes, thankfully this particular example is no longer suffering from this problem.

  • How did this Locomotive Break?

  • @MrScotsman82 - it's not known, but basically one of the connecting rods came off

  • @InterCity82 But How? did it fall off? Did it break of?

  • you should turn on the captions they are funny as hell

  • @matanuialive2010 - sorry? what?

  • @InterCity82 the transcribe voice recognition thingiy

  • Nice! It's brilliant to see Falcon back on track! :p What loco is that in the siding at 4:39?

  • @LemonyFuzzyBear - thanks! It sure is. The locos parked up in the siding are as follows... (from furthest away to closest to camera) Class 47 BR, Class 9F 'Evening Star' BR, HS4000 'Kestrel' BR, Class 57 Virgin

  • HE LIVES

  • @WestCoastRailwayBoy - lol, sure does

  • hooof do something new i want more vids plz but its good to

  • @ronop1 - more vids are being uploaded as we speak

  • do you know any good websites were i can get falcon or mallard for a kinda cheap price?

  • @Henryfan3 - try Hattons

  • @FirstGreatWesternHST - lol, that's a very 'open' question lol - that would take far too long to answer for all the locos I have but the cheapest loco I have is a little Industrial loco from Hattons for £15, and the most expensive was 'The City of Manchester' (vid on my channel) at a whopping £116

  • Nice to see it working well! I got a nice a4 just like that, mallard in green. 5*

  • @itfcsam - lol, I know! :)

  • Hi,I have just uploaded a video of my new A4 and found your video really interesting especially the close ups

  • @gearbox428 - thank you! I'll go check out your video now

  • I am so glad to see that falcon is back in action she has always been one of my favorites

  • @Henryfan3 - me too! :)

  • nice to see it running again :)

  • @itgamer100 - it sure is :) thanks

  • Is that an Eving Star I spy at 0:30?

  • @Femmenition - yup! :) very observant - vid is about 3rd or 4th in the queue

  • @InterCity82

    Then I shall wait patiently!

  • Great stuff! I love your Dapol MegaBox wagons!

  • @Javelin395 - lol, thanks Jack - they feature in a couple of upcoming videos!

  • when did u get them box wagons?

  • @zaccee1996 - haha, the first one of them was bought about a month ago, and the 5th one was bought just a week ago.

  • i have lner mallard and its never broke (apart from the buffer beam and brake on one side of the tender) and goes surprisingly slow for dc

  • @matanuialive2010 - yeah not all of them will, but a lot of them seem to have suffered from this problem. As for going slow... it could be the controller?

  • @InterCity82 when I sead slow I didn't mean that it was a problem i was just saying but it can go really fast as well

  • My Class A4 broke the same way and great vid By the way.

  • @theLEGOcommander1 - thanks

  • nice 5****s great video nothing better than a a br green a4

  • @jaannetts16 - thanks! yeah she does look nice
