  • but the riff at 06.35 is a song or improvvisation? very good keyboarder!! and good keyboard the M3

  • As a guitarist myself, all I can say is Derek is wicked on the keys. He is truly an awesome keyboardist.

  • Derek is the man :D !

  • Derek rox!

  • Does anyone know what organ set up he was using in the beginning of the video? Also, what Karma pattern or was it a standard factory preset? Thanks

  • @my2sons8791 - It was the factory combi A-008 "Ham n' Pickle", which uses a layer of two organs: Rock Organ Overdrive and M1 Perc Organ.

  • the organ sound is just amazing

  • Which piano patch(program) did he use in this video?

  • @tsanibaytchev - I don't know for sure, but I'm going to assume it was the original v1 piano (that later became an EX-USB sample after the release of M3 2.0 XPanded), because this was shot the first year it was introduced.

  • Derek is one of my fav keyboard players....great musician.

  • if god plays keyboard he sounds like sherinian thas 4 sure.

  • my favorite keyboard player on earth...

  • There's something very very pleasing ,the way this guy plays!

  • He's not that great a pianist in terms of technique judging by the video, but I haven't heard progressive rock like this before. Interesting.

  • @demosj

    HE HAS TECHNIQUE THOUGH!

CHECK OUT HIS WORK IN DREAM THEATER AND ESPECIALLY PLANET X

  • looks like nick swardson haha

  • goddamn!! that funky shit in the beginning!!!! he needs to do more of that shit not just rock !

  • M3 is an HAMMOND reference !

  • Hehehe... he's like the normal guy that plays awsomely...

  • The part at 4:00 is just sickness! Reminds me of some vintage Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis ish.

  • @ImyManz99 Kid Chamaleon

  • @ImyManz99 reminds me of Herbie Hancock's "Cameleon"

  • Not gonna say anything about the silly argument going on here, just thanks for the best m3 video showcasing the great sounds of this machine that I've seen

  • I love Bach...little info-before Bach people played with 8 fingers without the thumbs.Bach started to play with 10 because his music required it

  • I think he is one of the most complete keyboard players ever. He is not too technical like the new dream theater guy which is good. He has a good balance between science and art.

    Even worked with Malmsteen...

When he plays and write music you can feel its with feeling.

  • @dannywizz I think that's a great way of describing Derek and his approach to playing/writing. He can absolutely pull out THE CHOPS when it comes to playing with Yngwie, Planet X or some of the tracks on his own solo albums. But he's also a *killer* B-3/Fender Rhodes/"old-school" player and has a great sense of melody, which is the other side of his solo work as well as this video: all of his playing a "core" melodic concept, which many keyboardists in skip over for showcasing technique.

  • Daaaaaaaaaaamn, that's a cool organ sound !

  • whats the module at the side of the M3M?

  • It's a Korg Radias.

  • is it? i thought it was at first but then i thought it was too thick to be a Radius but you've just proved me wrong. thanks :)

  • Cool love the clav patch playing sweet ;-)

  • i love how so many people say you can't compare things because they're too different. The point of comparing things is to see how they are similar and different. lol Epic fail guys

  • What kind of scales he plays at the beginning?

  • He should have performed "Money Shot" from hes Planet X solo album!!

  • Why are so many people argue about JR, DS, and KM? They're all great keyboardists in their own ways. We can't compare them.

JR is the one with speed, DS is the one with unique style, and KM is the one with sensibility.

  • I love all three of them equally.

  • @logosmuziekfever

    i agree wuth u

  • @logosmuziekfever Who is KM?

There are a lot of other amazing keyboard players. No reason to concentrate on only 3...

  • @fedalxis He means Kevin Moore, who was Dream Theater's original Keyboardist, the one Derek Sherinian filled in for until he was replaced by Jordan Rudess.

  • @logosmuziekfever JR might have a unique samples but DS nail it on any organ samples. :)

  • if I made a ranking, it'd be absolutely obvious that the greatest DT keyboardist was Kevin Moore despite that I like Derek as well and I'm a very fan of Planet X. I think when Rudess banded DT about 2000 the mystic of the group faded away. Personally, i think Rudess prevails technique more than music and harmony and rock as the others are made of. he doesnt match the earlier years of DT.

  • I have to agree with you Felipe. No doubt all three keyboardists are excellent and definitely have their own unique style and advantages they bring to DT, but when Kevin Moore left 'something' went amiss, despite all the wizardry Derek and Jordan brought into DT that 'something' was never ever recaptured.

  • Oh you're just trying to be original, true after the album Awake it went downhill but Jordan would shit on Kevin Moore undoubtedly. Derek would as well

  • @felipeslayer28 you can't compare them, but JR is the best :)

  • 8:26 its BACH?? B.W.V. number ???? please

  • It is mentioned in these comments several times.

  • @malditonumero5

    847.......wtc, book 2, second prelude.

  • What is the name of that organ peace probably by Bach?

  • JS Bach, Well tempered clavier, prelude in C minor

  • Thank you!

  • Are all these factory sounds he is using?

  • Yes.

  • I guess Derek outgrew his flamboyant antics and garb from his Dream Theater days.

  • True, he was the most "Rock Star" of the band at the time (although Petrucci's "Hot Topic on Crack" Nu-Metal clothing and hair during the Gigantour easily topped Derek's "Shiny Shirts" ;-) but how many *rock* bands do you see in on-stage wardrobe offstage? That's the entire *point* of the latter, and in DT circa FII I'd argue it was the OTHER members of the band that were lacking in that regard and that Derek stood out only because he was the one *not* wearing a T-shirt and jeans onstage.

  • 7:35

    I love this part!

  • Wow que inspirador!!!

  • Derek has nothing to do with Jordan Rudess HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, Derek's style is much more groove oriented, even in his solos.

  • yeah jordan is a piano player not a keyboard player.. derek is so fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!

  • He use two M3 modules...with 76 and 88 keys you can use also the Korg RADIAS rack (and two modules of M3 with 88 keys).

  • I prefer the sonud of Derek...... is fantastic, is magic, .....

  • Haha I had to play that damn prelude in piano class for the final. I messed up the presto part in the same place. If only I could play the other stuff that he does.

  • muito bom, eu gostaria de ter orgão assim no meu yamaha pst 620..morro de inveja destes workstations!!!!

  • hey he played a lil' bit of "Lines in the Sand" there!

  • I like Derek's way of being a musician. He gets to play with some great bands, but if he went to the mall or out some where, I'm sure most people wouldn't recognize him. He gets to be a rock star, but without the hassles of fans pestering him all the time. I'm sure some people do recognize him, but he's not real flashy or anything. He just looks like a regular guy. GREAT Keyboard player!!

  • @alexl1001 He may not be flashy now, but did you see Derek back when he was a member of Dream Theater? THAT was flashy.

  • @alexl1001

I like that too but probably Dream Theater wanted a more flashy rock star keyboardist and that's why they brought in Mr. Rudess. Even Jordan's Korg product demos are more funny, he tells a ot of stories and jokes. He's a real showman actually.

  • That´s just tight !

  • Haha that damn Bach Prelude II in C minor! I tried for years to play it once flawless on the piano, never managed. Derek is fantastic but he also blew it on that crazy left hand part... No matter, great playing - love Derek's awesome Hammond chops -, fantastic keyboard!

  • I think Jordan is a better player for DT, but Derek is a great player too, and I think he's got better sound

  • I am a drummer, why am I watching this silliness! I shouldn't really be allowed here to be fair - but oooo he is good ! I fucking love Planet X and his solo stuff, great newest album.

  • derek one of my fave synth players^^

  • Whats that organ fugue he's playing at the end? Its sick. Wtb korg m3 plz.

  • It's a prelude in c minor by bach, the fugue comes after that part.

  • Jordan's sounds and patches are a lot better than Kev's or Derek's. When it comes to soloing, Kevin's more melodic but Jordan got tons of melodic riffs, check out Liquid Tension Experiment, u said u dont find his solos catchy, listen to that and the Rudess-Morgentein Project. Rudess has proven that he is the best keyboardist for Dream Theater and maybe of all keyboardist. "Keyboardist and Synthesist", not "Pianist"

  • Thanks for that last remark... I'm a keyboardist and I'm sick of being called pianist, and hearing other keyboardists get called pianists for that matter. Keyboardist is a wider term than pianist.

  • And pianists are sick of being called Keyboardists. Glad I'm both.

  • Great armenian artist!

  • wow this is amazing

look at his hands @ 8:50 its crazy

  • On 6:36 there's a DT riff, wich song is it?

  • I believe it's from the Piano solo on the Once in a Livetime album (preformed by Derek of course)

  • Yes, it is.

    Derek Sherinian piano solo

  • It's Lines In The Sand.

Derek uses it in his piano solo that finished on Once in a Livetime.

  • spectacular!

  • oh my god...

he So good, it Almost discouraging....

    wow...

i have the M3, but i do not have in incredible skill...

Wow. its all i can say.

    *boots up M3*

  • I love the string part he plays between 7:00 and 7:14... is that a planet X song?

  • Music major goal is to sound good and different , that´s why Petrucci is better musician than Michael Angelo or Chopin than other "virtuosos".Rudess has outstanding technique, maybe the best out there and is improvising is maybe same level(you can search in youtube some improv, where you can see that he can play all styles outstanding) .But its also true that my favorite solos also include Derek T.O.T and others from K.Moore,About Dream theater, they are more concrete, less improv band,

  • I also haven't really found any of Jordan's solos to be very catchy, but his arrangements and layerings, such as on orchestral pieces like Octavarium, are absolutely breathtaking. And in my opinion the way you contribute to the songs themselves is way more important than your leads. I like Jordan and Kevin pretty equally with that in mind, they're both very good at their own things, but as for Derek, I think he either takes all the attention, or none. Good for solo stuff, bad for band stuff.

  • I beg to differ. Petrucci is great, but MAB is da man! -Arroyo-

  • Oh man, I love that shit at the 3:45 mark! Sounds like some of that old school "Sonic The Hedgehog" type shit in the early 90s. Sounds totally badass!

  • nice. j.s.bach at 8:35.

  • Is it just me or was that something from Symphony X on the pipe organ part?

  • Nope, J. S. Bach Prelude in Cm

  • I have Derek Sherinians Korg Triton extreme signed by him used on tour by him for two years. Its for sale w/flight case if someone is interested in owning a piece of prog rock history. Message me.

  • 6:36 piano solo was played in a dream theater show :O

  • Yes, and this song are written by Derek in a special album for the Vic Firth drum stick.

  • I respect Derek Sherinian, but he just killed Bach.

  • and he agrees with that by the expressions on his face even!

  • i think he raised him back from the dead just so to slap him in the back of his neck for his playing....

  • Been using korgs for years now and there by far the best synths on the market imo. I currenly have an M1, triton extreme and a Electribe EMX1. Might add one of these babys to the setup soon! One thing i always find annoying about almost all the korg demo vids, is that they usually spend half the demo with a draw bar organ playing the same old funky crap. Then usually show karma with a lead guitar sound for the rest of the vid. Wish they would cater for other music styles a bit more in the demos!

  • No guitar in this one. ;-)

  • when he switched to that classic piano sound, did i hear some dream theater in there, or was that just me?

  • It wasn't just you, it's a section from Lines in the sand, which he used as his keyboard solo on once in a live time.

  • Lines In The Sand =D

  • I just bought the M3 and I cant find an instruction manual to explain this things features. Am I missing something?

  • I would suggest joining the M3 forum at:

    karma-lab(dot)com/forum/m3

(It's difficulty to post links here.)

They will answer all your questions.

  • Sherinian is FUNKY!

  • you're kidding???sheridian has nothing to do with jordan rudess... rudess kick ass (and i'm a pianist) grettings from spain

  • The keyboardist of the allmighty "Change of seasons." To talk about who's best of rudess and Sherinian is not worth spending time on. They are different in so many ways.

  • derek's amazing

  • i love this keyboard so much, it's like musical porn. it just costs too much.

  • heres what I feel this debate is coming down to. Jordan is the more "rudimentary classical piano player keyboardist" of the two, and Derek is more of a rockstar. Each is technically proficient in all aspects, but each has their specialty in a live setting/in their element.

  • What song is he playing at 8:40?

  • Free bird

  • no, thats not freebird

  • Funky dude

  • there will never be "the number one guitar player, keyboard player" or something

everyone it`s good on his style

  • well.. but planet x it's a more impressive band (more complex is not necessarily faster), tempos are crazy there.

i mean dt, has algo wild tempo changes, but planet x requires more effort and technique. mcalpine is a monster ad virgil donati runs circles around portnoy.

  • Amen to that. What happens here is that people just dont get Planet X's complex music, so they listen to Dream... when they learn SOMETHING about music, they will realize which band is the best. I mean, Donati > Portnoy, Macalpine / Garsed / Holdsworth > Petrucci, Sherinian > Rudess, Philpot / Johnson > Myung... However, Dream Theater still rocks and is a great start in Prog Rock.

    Greetings from Mexico...

  • Opinions are subjective, but I love both bands

  • No, it is not about opinions. This guy is comparing musicians and saying who's better... I sugest you should stop that senselessness shit and let each band cgange your life in the way they all are trying... they do it with me couse I am not thinking wich one is better...

  • Please can you stop to compare Jordan and Derek, they're great both in different ways. PERIOD.

  • these are the same fuckers that compare satriani with hendrix and stuff like that... you are asking for too much

  • or better yet, satriani with petrucci. Hendrix is WAY overrated and had very sloppy methods.

  • Hendrix brought the guitar to the front of the band and had a totally unique sound. Without him, there would be no such thing as the modern guitar virtuosso.

  • i think rudess has one of the most complex creative minds out there. Sherinian rips it up, hes basically making love to the korg in this one, but rudess just progressivley takes music to a higher level besides jamming.

  • I always liked Sherinian's musicality more, but always felt that Rudess had more technique. I guess I can't really put one above the other.

  • i watch rudess for years and he never had a mistake.i watch derek for 10 minutes and he had a big one at the prelude in c minor(the last song)rudess is light years ahead at technique.its like compare a ferrari with a hundai.sorry for my english

  • I prefer rudess.has more tecnic,and is more "musician"(for me)scuse me for the english.xD

  • Both are great; I prefer Derek personally, but I'd still bow to Rudess any day.

  • I prefer Derek too. He seems more geared towards making listenable music instead of showing off.

I find Jordan a bit too technique focused. Not that his technique doesn't make good music, but if you listen to it almost every day, you'll find that he does the same things over and over, and it gets boring. Sometimes he does something spectacular though, and that's worth it.

  • Amen.

  • Very well said! I think the biggest compliment I could give is that as a bassist whose done a fair amount of professional studio and live work, I'd *much* rather play a session with Derek rather then Jordan.

  • Derek compares to Jordan as John Petrucci compares to Joe Satriani; they're both awesome and both have a unique style :)

  • I personaly prefer Derek, Jordan is without a doubt the best when you are only considering technique but i would take Derek's songwriting and creativity anytime over that.

  • on the note of who is better than who, i think its impossible to determine who is better out of great musicans like derek & jordan. They are both extremely talented. I personally couldn't say one is better than the other but I can have my own personal preference over one (in this case i prefer Jordan to Derek), but that's not to say that Jordan is better than Derek or vice versa.

To say one is clear cut better than the other is impossible. Its indeterminable.

  • Yeah Jordan ascended the DT music in a way that Derek couldn't even imagine.

But don't forget that both are 2 different unique pieces of Dream Theater era.

    Love them both.

  • Derek is better....A)he is Armenian like me.....B)Planet X is better because Virgil Donati may not be the best drummer, but he is deffinately WAY better then MIke portnoy, because portnoy CANNOT count or stay in time

  • are you mad virgil not the best drummer?lol....are you listening at what he is playing at all?i think you havent at all or if you have then you dont understand nothing...dave weckl says about virgil-can you imagine how good donati is

  • Both Derek and Jordan are very talented musicians. I happen to very much prefer Derek's style to Jordan's. I think Derek doing his own thing was the best thing that could happen to him. I actually listen to Planet X more than Dream Theater nowadays.

  • I dont like people to compare Jordan to Derek.

    Very childish.

I prefer to say that both are 2 different unique pieces of the Dream Theater era.

    Love them both.

  • unique?just another keyboard players.....you cant imagine how many player can match them!!!!CHICK COREA IS UNIQUE

  • chick corea is a genious.He rules

  • Better than Rudess! hahaha

My little 12 year old niece can whip

this guy's ass. That Bach excerpt

from 8:26 on was just too painful to

listen to with all the mistakes and slop.

    Rudess eats Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninov

    for breakfast!!!!

  • yes he is better than rudess...thats why derek is playing with tony macalpine and the great virgil donati...and rudess is playing with john petruci(LOL) and mike portnoy(LOL)..you are problably not musician so you cant understand this!the best play only with the best so look!Chick Corea playes with Fran Gambale!gambale playes with virgil donati!and donati playes with scot henderson, chick corea, bred garsett, derek sherinian, victor wooten, john patituci, and dave weckl said that donati is the best

  • MUCH BETTER THAN RUDESS

  • Heeey, he does something with the organ that really sounds like Dressed to Kill by Symphony X...

  • Good point, actually the structure of the unison from Dressed to Kill is similar as with Bach's Prelude no.02.

  • unused Radias-R

  • True, but Korg just had an M3-73 unit sitting up there on the stage loaded with a Radias-R at the same time. Derek didn't have the opportunity to prepare for using it, it was just "there".

  • thank God derek´s no more on dream theater...In that way we had PLANET X and his solo work too!!!!! Love you derek

  • Exactly! His works with Planet X and his solo albums are more of his style.

  • Holy Groove!

  • I understand the little slip-up in Bach's prelude, I've been playing that almost everyday for 3 years and I still make mistakes. Tricky Bach.

  • I love the samples he plays from Black Utopia, especially the one with the Rhodes riff (7:35)

  • Yeah, Stony Days is an awesome song!

  • I have the M3. I can honestly say that its the best syntheziser i ever tried.(ok Oaysis is cool but too expensive for a 20 year old to buy). Really cool, easy to learn and totally completes my rigg. If you want a good mix of synths you sholud do as i.

    Korg m3, Yamaha ES7, Korg X50 and V-synth vers2-

  • hi there Derek. guy from UK here,im hoping to get my M3 soon just getting the dosh together.

Loved ya demo!!!! and a wicked PIPE ORGAN number as well! loved it, i wanted to know what sort of PIPE Organ sounds are in the M3.

    thanks and enjoy your playing.

    regards

    Karl

  • It's Ross from friends!!!

  • derek plays all synth parts on yngwie malmsteens coming cd in juli.on tour malmsteen have another guy.

  • Yeah, Michael Troy, another amazing keyboardist!

  • Listen to the keyboard solos on Quantum by Planet X. They blow Rudess' work away.

  • yeah! specially the one in the last minute of Quantum Factor

  • Scott Storch is better than both Rudess and this Derek dude.

  • Dude I just watched Scott Storch and I must say I never heard of him before but you must be on crack because I can play keyboards better than that and I don't even play keyboards lol. I like Jordan and Derek each player has their own style and I like both. But there is no doubt that Jordan Rudess is a modern day Liszt. His technique is inhuman.

  • You are talking a lot of shit.. Dont compare the guys that reach the top, they are there not for competing but making our poor lives better. You started to hate each other becouse of "who is better" when those guys admire the others work

  • No no no...... Rudess is the BEST in solo....

  • derek is unique in his own way. he pwns at fusion.

  • dereks solo sound has mush distortion and delay.think jordan r.has a more clearer sound.but the key.solo.master is jens johansson,ex rising force.

  • Derek Sherinian is the best my favorite keyboards. From turkey

    i like the planet x and macalpine : ))

  • I like Planet X more, but I like Jordan Rudess better

  • Derek S. is the best my fav keyboards, and I admire since Dream Theater. es fantastico, en Planet X, me gusta mucho su estilo. felicidades Derek. Santy ..... from Madrid.

  • The DT tune is from Lines In The Sand's intro.

    Derek kicks some major ass!

  • which DT tune is it?

  • It's cool how he played a Dream Theater tune at the end of the sixth minute. Especially when it's been so long since he left the band.

  • From the back, that definitely looks like an M3 and a Radius next to each other in the same case. He may only be playing the M3, but there's Radius on the left in that case (on the right in this back view).

  • derek sherinian has now finnished keyboards for this years malmsteen record.but i think yngwie are using another guy on his tour.

  • He's been kicked out !

  • did this guy get kicked out of dream theater or did he quit? I remember seeing him on the malsteem tour two years ago and he looked like he was hating life. Not that malsteem is bad but far from how D.T. preforms.
