What is the weight on this engines and what series number would you need to use to get parts for them just in case you would like to convert a old mecanical one?
There were a pair of 350hp DDEC Silver 6V53TIA's on ebay back in April.
The seller wanted $9,950 for each of them.
If it helps any, the seller's number is: 586-749-0600
Many of the internal parts will interchangeable between the older mechanical engines and the new electronically controlled ones.
The main differences are heads, blower (has no governor on it), ecm, injectors, block (it is machined differently), and some small proprietary stuff ...
the main difference is Silver 53's have cross head pistons all 53's have had 4 valves since the 60's. These ones are DDEC III. They are the only detroit 2 stroke still in production!!!
absolutely right these engines trace their linage back to the late 30's with the advent of the 6-71 series.nothing sounds like a 53 wound up to 2800rpm or more.....im getting one built to the tune of a 500 hp twin turbo, man i can hardly wait....
Back in the 1970's these engines were everywhere. I can recall seeing many GMC engine-forwards and tilt-cabs with 6V-53's in them, White "Compact" tilt-cabs, a few Brockway tilt-cabs, a few Ford Louisvilles, many International engine-forwards and tilt-cabs, even one in a Mack MB tilt-cab!! 6V-53's were also very common in custom fire apparatus of late 1960's-early 1970's vintage, especially in Seagrave, American LaFrance, Maxim, Pemfab, Hahn, and Coast fire apparatus.
Silver 53 series came out in late 1984, and were mechanical engines with a number of improvements on the previous Turbo engines.
I'm not sure when this 6V53DDEC came out, but guessing after 2000, as it was never a civilian engine (military only). This engine has a whole number of improvements over the 6V53T, lots of the same goodies and then some.

what is the "silver" 4 valve head vs 2 valve?
Jthumper 3 years ago
The silver, to my knowledge, denotes a DDEC-equipped engine, not necessarily the # of valves, but I could be wrong.
lilbrudder32 3 years ago
@lilbrudder32
There are mechanical silver trim Detroit Diesels.
There are set of features for them, but blower bypass stands out. All silvers are 4 valve, but so is most production since the sixties.
Silver instead of green paint is a good cue.
