I'm a freshman college student and in general I spend almost all the time not spent sleeping (4 hours typically, by the way) studying and doing homework, even when I don't have finals or midterms. I don't have time to relieve stress and I wish wholeheartedly that my school would buy itself a heart and bring in therapy dogs. I think its very callous and unsympathetic of these two to say these things and find myself wondering what subjects they were studying in college.
The difference is that you pay to go to college, a job gets you money. On top of that it is expensive as shit and when the fate of the rest of your life weighs in the balance it's something that you will most likely never experience again in your life.
I'm sorry, but these two people make complete asses of themselves every time they open their mouths on this show for several reasons. You cannot use the "back when I went to school" argument because institutions change dramatically over time. A study published in "The British Journal of Psychiatry" suggested that one of the most important factors in preventing students from committing suicide during school and finals is to provide adequate means of alleviating academic stress and worries.
I'm totally with Jayar. My school had this kind of stuff (no dogs, but massages, chicken tenders, tater tots, ice cream, games, etc.) not because they were babying us and felt so sad that we were stressed, but because it gave us a break from studying. I also think the fact that it made us think that finals week wasn't 100% awful had something to do with it...
our uni offers free pizza and other things at times, while other events cost money. i assume it's evidence-based, and shown to improve grades, retention of material, etc. it makes sense psychologically. politically you guys are great, but i have to say, intellectually you facepalm often. ;)
My university did this (the dog part). It works. When you pet a dog, you're blood pressure goes down. Good for the health of your students, and the dogs like the attention.
I thought it was well understood that interaction with animals relieves stress. I always felt better after stroking my cat. They don't judge you like people do and they are always happy to see you.
I go to a private college, and they bring in therapy dogs every semester for finals. I preferred to de-stress by getting my actual work done, but I've always thought it was a really sweet gesture.
I'm with Jayar. This really isn't a huge deal. They do the whole therapy dog thing at my school. It's not babying students at all...at least I don't think so. Who the hell suddenly has all their problems solved because they got to pet a dog? Babying students would be having someone to do their homework for them or giving them A's for doing nothing.
Therapy dogs or not, you're still going to have to take the test.
Although, I would rather my school spend money on fixing dorms and classrooms.
I dunno, if I've been stressed and I come home, sit on my couch and my cat sits on my lap and starts purring and kneading it definitely makes me feel a lot better.
I have said it before i will say it again Colleges and University these days are nothing more than expensive day care centers for Young men and women these days.
Eliminating Sallie Mae's loan scam and lowering tuition to a reasonable rate would be relaxing, especially when the economy is self-destructing and degrees are a huge gamble today compared to yore.
If destressing the kids works, to improve grades or stop suicides, i don't care if its "pussy" or "not what we did when i was your age" - if it works it works!
Traditionalism be damned.
What we should be focused on is that this is a waste of money, that could better be spent on expanding access to education - unless it really really stops dropout or suicide rates which i doubt because it doesn't SOUND like something that'd work (i need to see evidence man).
Why not invest in suicide prevention? Wellness centers and massages may be nice for students who are stressed but they are not going to be effective in helping suicidal or mentally ill students. I think the problem with universities is that they are run like businesses because many of the presidents now are former business executives. I saw it at my alma mater.
I find that I perform better mentally if I'm not stressed. A lot of students don't have time to unwind outside of school and their performance in class suffers.
Cenk and Ana make it sound like school (and life) is SUPPOSED to be stressful, like that's how things are and how they always will be. I strongly disagree.

Kinda torn on this one. They sound like nice perks and all, but I'd rather see lower tuition or help with buying all of these blasted textbooks. $250 USED for a basic genetics text. Plus I already have a dog, just let me bring her to campus during finals, no expense to the college and I'll even pick up the poop. Well maybe.
My bf works in a field where they sometimes have had things like the massages on site. But he also works in a field where they may work 6-7 day weeks, when busy they were working sometimes 14-21 days in a row. Often the workers have no benefits and when the job is up don't know what they'll do next. So I can see people spoiling them. They also take dogs to work. Look at what industries do well in the US, the ones that treat employees like this school program (tech, entertainment, etc).
I'd rather a kitty but this makes more sense than ignoring stress and leaving it unchecked. It's not like the school is giving the kids the answers to the finals, they're encouraging the students to do well by offering relief if they want it. Sounds like something that should be offered in jobs to help people so they can work better and don't suddenly snap.
I'm at Kent State and students in the dorms sometimes get dogs. I don't see the point in making fun of people for wanting a stress release, and a University that's helping to give it to them. Personally, I play instruments and generally make my own fun. For the kids who don't, I see no problem with the university providing basic stress relief services. I'm not sure if any research has been done, but the program will most likely lead to less stress related illnesses, and therefore better grades.
If ur feeling alienated and blue by the pressure and expectations college imposes on you, I could imagine spending a few hours with an unconditionally loving animal could go a long way towards making you feel better. I'm sure medical doctors in the future will discover that fostering a positive emotional disposition is a necessary ingredient in any good holistic healing routine.
I'm with Jayar on this one...you guys keep mentioning that 'real life' is just as stressful as college, but in real life you have money and can decide what to do with your free time and where to spend it. Most college students are struggling financially, and generally fall into a numbing routine of going to school during the day and hitting the books in the evening and/or working some low level job...often there isn't time for much else, including stress relief.
@argonaaut It also depends on the individual because real life might be easy if you're just a single person working some routine job in a store, but not if you have to search for employment in a more competitive job to support a family and pay off your debts. College students generally aren't really forced to attend every class like in high school, as long as they do well on the exams, and some are still living with their parents. And aren't college students known for partying a lot.
i'm with Cenk and Ana. it's things like this is why people are getting soft. stop coddling everybody. let them suffer through studying for exams like everybody else.
We did it here at UMD just a few days ago during finals. College students pay a ton and commit suicide at a much higher rate than the rest of the populace. We aren't allowed to have dogs on campus the least we can get is fuckin 2 minutes once a semester.
Sounds fine. Maybe it's an experiment. Lots of schools do stuff like this, like barbecues & such. JR totally was right. Ana & Cenk are like those two muppets in the balcony.
The schools aren't forcing kids to do these stress relievers, they are making them available. If the kids want to take advantage of the dogs/salsa/laser tag then good for them, they are dealing with real stress. Also the schools are covering their ass from the growing number of suicides that are happening from stressed out kids on college campuses.
Kids at my school often spend 18 hours a day in the library during finals and getting pizza bc you didn't have time to go eat is wonderful.
@literaturechick12 thats the part when girlfriend or boyfriend maybe friends or pff family can give you that massage by just asking u dont have to pay for it i mean they will not give you a pro massage but theyll take the stress out.... and you can also try smoking weed once in a while it will take the stress out of you 100% guaranteed :) aight peace :)
I agree with Cenk & Ana. What are you going to do when you're out of college, working at a stressful job? There isn't going to be midnight massages or therapy dogs. You're not going to know how to deal with the stress by yourself and you're going to break down. You deal with stress by yourself, not with massages. You are not 5 years old -.-'
The comments system on Youtube is seriously broken. What is going on with the "Highest Rated Comments"? It makes absolutely no sense. Is it that difficult to organize them like on other sites? What's the point of a "Highest Rated Comment" if it disappears in a few hours? Also, if you keep refreshing the page, you can thumb up/down indefinitely. Epic design fail.
I have a theory about the department that creates and recreates and recreates the comment section for Youtube. Every several months they throw a giant drug party, get completely wasted, then come in and implement the new comment design the next day.
A lot of this stuff is covered by the student government, and they use the money left over from their budget for the semester to buy stuff for finals. At my college if we had money left over after the year was over we would loose the money which led to some crazy year end expenditures.
Lots of people (even in real life...) have many different types of therapy. All these colleges are doing is actually showing kids how to deal with their stress, which most kids aren't taught on their own.
I think personally that if I was handed a dog that needed taking out on walks 3-4 times a day, food and attention I'd be even more stressed because now I have to take care of a dog instead of concentrating on my damn finals.
jayar is wrong for once. the real world doesnt baby u jayar. u guys have christmas partys because ur working hard and u earned it. these kids arent even paying for college their mommy and daddy are/loans. jayar just likes to disagree sumtimes.
Just because Cenk and Ana had it rough during WW2 doesn't mean we can't improve the community today.. -_-'
60 years ago, people would probably make fun at everything we have now, "spoiling" ourselves with bottled water and air conditioning.. Making exams less stressful will not change the students' perception of the real world! If anything, it will drive the new generation to improve the community after college. Which is why we drink clean water today -.-
Oviously the Turks don't get any perks at their jobs. Stress is a killer. If everybody got a massage a day the world would be a way better place. Cenk doesn't know whats up! Chill out Cenk! Why are you so pissed off. Come on you sound like an asshole Cenk!
Cenk & Anna, you have to realize something. Colleges don't have a big pile of money that they draw from whenever they have to do something. Each aspect of the college has its own separate fund pool. And when someone donates money to the college, they typically specify what they want to happen with that money. So if someone donated money to the college saying they wanted it to be used for stress relief for the students, that's what the college has to do with it.
I think therapy dogs are a bit much... But maybe encouraging student yoga programs, which benefit health and reduce stress, stuff like that, is worthwhile because it reduces stress and teaches healthy habits for life. Laser tag won't be practical for real life. It costs money. A yoga mat doesn't cost much.
This is why I can't afford school? Because they are paying for massages and therapy dogs? Fuck capitalism. Shit is becoming more elitist by the day. Average working class\middle class people won't be able to afford this at all in a few years.
College is stressful. Most of the money is wasted on things that don't benefit students. Promoting a society where people care about the happiness of others is not babying. It's just being a good person. Our generation has more debt, fewer jobs, higher expectations, more competition, etc.
Oh yeah the laser tag thing is a bit ridiculous but what I didn't like is how they looked at stress a common part of life and a laughing matter when it is not.
This is a great idea. I went to a VERY intense University in Toronto and it is notorious for being harsh, serious. Students suffer from severe depression at this campus and they brought in a wellness clinic to help. Pressure from parents for perfect grades, ivy league competition, and very little school spirit leads to unreasonable amounts of stress.
I went to school for Engineering. The tests and subject matter are tough. The only time I was stressed out before a class was when I did not prepare properly. Go to class, do your homework, study your notes and graded assignments. College is easy once you get your routine going. If you party all day well then you will be stressed out, and in my opinion shouldn't be in school to begin with. Go to class, do your work and you'll be fine on the overwhelming majority of your tests.
yes ana, the red sweater with mic pulling down the neck line a little bit DOES do something for me, but seriously, dogs being used as therapy is a gimmick??? dogs rock!!! think i'll need to watch this vid a few more times but with the sound off. thnx
I'm terribly disappointed Cenk & Ana, you're acting like a bunch of Republicans. If these things, that I'm guessing aren't that expensive, helps the students dealing with the stress, raises their quality of living, and helps the scores? It's brilliant! You reduce the stress, which might save someone from going over the edge, or drives others to drugs, or whtvr.
Companies that pay for massages & gyms tend to increase productivity, it's the progressive way of saving money, if it works, WHY NOT!?
I with JR on this working is so much easier than studying. At college every thing rely's upon you to go to classes submit assignments take the tests all your own work and little help where in the real world if you need help ask a colleague or your boss projects are worked on together and dead lines are not a tight as when your in college Let the kids play with dogs if you don't want that don't part take
At CSULB during finals week, we would have coffee, donuts, and free 15 min massages and a piano player in the union. They would also offer exercise classes too! I see nothing wrong with this!
Besides it's not the administration that pays for this. It comes from the Student LIfe and Development, which we contribute money too every semester.
engineerign and science students i understand but arts no no no stress in any shape or form

I'm sure medical doctors in the future will discover that fostering a positive emotional disposition is a necessary ingredient in any good holistic healing routine.
argonaaut 1 year ago
I'm with Jayar on this one...you guys keep mentioning that 'real life' is just as stressful as college, but in real life you have money and can decide what to do with your free time and where to spend it. Most college students are struggling financially, and generally fall into a numbing routine of going to school during the day and hitting the books in the evening and/or working some low level job...often there isn't time for much else, including stress relief.
argonaaut 1 year ago 21
@argonaaut It also depends on the individual because real life might be easy if you're just a single person working some routine job in a store, but not if you have to search for employment in a more competitive job to support a family and pay off your debts. College students generally aren't really forced to attend every class like in high school, as long as they do well on the exams, and some are still living with their parents. And aren't college students known for partying a lot.

We did it here at UMD just a few days ago during finals. College students pay a ton and commit suicide at a much higher rate than the rest of the populace. We aren't allowed to have dogs on campus the least we can get is fuckin 2 minutes once a semester.

Give the kids a break...

I think personally that if I was handed a dog that needed taking out on walks 3-4 times a day, food and attention I'd be even more stressed because now I have to take care of a dog instead of concentrating on my damn finals.
No thanks.
SupaAmi 1 year ago
a trained therapy dog costs about 20,000$
massage therapist (NOT masseuse!) about 20,000$/yr
laser tag is a one timer at probably 100,000$
- give the kids 5 dogs and 5 massage therapeuts - all that stuff they do for the students will add up to about 500-800k a year, i guess.
so, where's the problm here? itz's noit that big of a deal. really not that expensive compared to tuition fees, right?
come on, studiyng today's more stressfull than it was in Cenk's days i highly suggest.JAYAR is RIGHT!

A yoga mat doesn't cost much.

helping teach kids to deal with stress? how is that babying?
ztakn 1 year ago
College is stressful. Most of the money is wasted on things that don't benefit students. Promoting a society where people care about the happiness of others is not babying. It's just being a good person. Our generation has more debt, fewer jobs, higher expectations, more competition, etc.

At CSULB during finals week, we would have coffee, donuts, and free 15 min massages and a piano player in the union. They would also offer exercise classes too! I see nothing wrong with this!
Besides it's not the administration that pays for this. It comes from the Student LIfe and Development, which we contribute money too every semester.
