The recent failures in intelligence leading to the invasion of Iraq is a clear sign that our country's intelligence is not good enough. Funny how people suggest we solve this problem by shutting down CIA completely.

I love how everyone criticizes the CIA, yet they don't know the lengths that the Agency goes to keep the country safe, while we remain unaware of the threat, the CIA has already dealt with it so we can sleep safely. I for one would be honored to work for the agency.

I love James Bond movies. I get the idea that there is no intelligence without the agent in the field actively engaging the reality and updating the network on the particular program. But being human, the think there is less mission accomplished as in the movies.

bond pictures are great, the books are better. best was tv drama "secret life of ian flemming" with sean's son playing ian. he even has sandy hair like the real ian but good on camera like sean. and the good shepard was the best DC drama ever. just wish it had an extra love scene.

Weiner states that there WERE several CIA sucesses during the Cold War (ie. Iran, Guatemala). IMO these sucesses werent relevant to the end result of the cold war; the US didnt win the cold war, the soviets lost it. The soviet system was doomed to failure because, unlike democratic capitalism, it ran contrary to human nature. Also IMO, Gorbachev did more to end the cold war than any US president.

What McLaughlin says about Weiner's book is true. Its a great survey of CIA history, but Weiner consistently fits every episode into the same mold of incompetence and dumb luck. I is hard to believe that we won the cold war without a few CIA successes worthy of note.
