Made In India is an inspiring film. The documentary addresses a major conflict that many US citizens with immigrant parents’ face –which traditions can you call your own? Deepti Paul captivates the audience by allowing them into her most intimate moments when finding her own identity and deciding her future - arranged marriage or love.
Don't you drag our country into this you dumb bitch. You are an American and anything you do reflects on the United States and not on India.
If you are so cool and desirable as you think, you'd find someone in your country to marry you. Clearly that has not worked for you...you dumb loser...perhaps it is because you are insecure about your own identity and give out that unsure loser vibe. Nobody is gonna sleep with you.
@Mrparrot73 how ignorant are you? I mean, really? How come youtube hasn't just blocked you for being so ignorant?! I mean I'm all for freedom of speech but come on...
@oluwaba I don't understand. Did you see how she mentioned going to India and in the same frame showed an NYC sewer? If someone compared your country and your people to a sewer, would you be pissed off... particularly, when the person trying to show you down is more or less a nobody...
@Mrparrot73 ... that's interesting that you're judging the entire 1 hour film on a 5 minute trailer, very interesting that you can't have a discussion without name calling. The sewer cap you mentioned is actually part of the opening montage where I show shots of NYC that actually look like they could be in India, trying to convey how the east and west are merged. The sewer cap is a literal metaphor that India is part of the groundwork in NYC. Obviously, that's not what you got from it.
@brownscape That's a good one. What if someone were to shit on the word "America" and say... "Shitting is an essential activity...I was just trying to say that America's role is essential to the world"?
nice video. i would be really nervous about meeting someone for an arranged marriage. that's a big decision to make. do you have any more videos like this? just curious.
hahaha....k.....i was born n raised in kerala....now im in US....i wud nvr ever marry a girl who was born n raised in US....i wud date them....dats all!!!
Hey Deepti , this such a good documentry..my name is also deepthi i m a mallu tooo ...and i live in canada ....i approaching marriagable age according to my parents...and seeing your video has really helped me in a good way as to wat to expect.....
Hey Deepti, I love that you made this documentary. I'm also a christian girl from Kerala, and I understand exactly what you went through. I'm researching arranged marriages from my grad project and your video is such a breath of fresh air. Thanks so much!
This girl is Americanized. I think Theresa Theckanath wants to have a lot of diverse experience in SEX and DIVORCE, without which most Americans can't live.
This young lady has grown up in the US. She looks Indian but doesn't think like a Indian. She is not made in India. Solution is to find a Indian man with here type of thinking who lives in the US.
oh yeah.. if that was the case you wouldn't be so hurt and getting hyper. and to top it, replying to this comment. obviously it does hurt LOL! gal go get a life! and some more sense.. cos noone wins and argument by using foul. thats the last resort of losers
more than 300millions are there in america, all of them choose the bride and groom in their wish.but none of the marriages are strong like indian marriage.divorces after 3 months after getting marry.i strongly believe in indian marriage.they are very much responsibility and seriousness in it.they dont consider marriage as games,or changing wives or husbands like we changing clothes.
dear deepti,in america, they each other knows very well, after they get marry they dont take the responsibility to love each other they had promised b4.but in arranged marriage,if sons and daughters agree with their parents choice, always there is support from both sides.if we live with the guy in our own wish, will be like loneliness.
In this world different community have different systems and traditon on marriage....arranged marriage realy works in Kerala,India.Even if family life is miserable it is very difficult to get divorce in christian community in Kerala.Any way you go ahead with your stand...By tha way have you found any boy as life parter?..."Best Wishes"
I agree with Deepti-- presenting ideas that your family instills upon you and your reaction to it isn't making fun of your family. This is art; art explores our minds, and our feelings, and brings them out candidly.
I think that the pressure of arranged marriage varies from person to person, family to family. Being from the same state in the same country doesn't mean that one's experience with a cultural force will be exactly the same. I don't believe that the people in the video look like weirdos. That too, is very subjective, and depends on how someone views arranged marriage, and how much exposure he or she has towards it.
Its a nice video. But the way u presented it makes it look like u r being forced to marry someone. I'm frm kerala, n I don't think its a big deal. Its 2007; ur parents usually just suggest a guy and u r the who decides if u wanna marry that person and u get to know him b4 u marry him too. U were kinda insulting ur Grandma n parents by making them look like they were weirdos. India's culture is not something u should make fun of. Its much better that some others. by the way, I support divorce :-)
Thanks for the comment. I don't think I was making fun of anyone, my entire family are fine with the way they were presented. They said what they said and they stand by it. If you think they look like weirdos, that's all you don't you think? And if we never questioned our background, culture, and heritage how do we learn about ourselves?
Hey, congrats on this film! It looks quite interesting, especially since we rarely get any documentaries on arranged marriages from the Malayalee perspective. Any screenings with South-Asian Churches?
I would like you to know about the tradition of 'swayamwar'. I hope once after knowing the tradition of swayamwar you will know what really is called 'Made in India'.
Deepti i hope you do realize that arranged marriage is originally a hindu custom. for hindus love marriage is a foreign concept coming from western world or from christians. Another thing - sanskrit or any of the native indian languages don't have a word that means divorce. muslims invented the word talaq. I hope you also realize that india falls under the bracket of countires with least percentage of divorce.
Pretty typical closed-minded view of America as the Sodom & Gomorrah of divorce. The highest divorce rate is Belarus, btw. The lowest- Macedonia. As for Hindus coming up with the idea of arranged marriage, Puneet isn't familiar with the Western European dynasties that had no idea of Hinduism that were required to marry a royal with 1country with a royal from another to form political alliances. I could go on, but there's only 500 characters allowed.
ok so macedonia is the lowest percentage of divorce...but tell me, can you actually even think of comparing macedonia's population to India's? i'll let you think on that =)
I have absolutely no idea what you're referring to. I certainly have no clue as to a place where I claimed that marriage isn't practiced all over the world. Message me if you really want to duke this out instead of writing a response 3 months later.
my dear dickhead nksrivastav please read my comment once again before stinking this place. u might find difference between "invented the word talaq" and "invented it." it might help if u get ur education at a place other than madrasa .
I met some really cool mallu chicks in kottayam who took me to kochi to get a tatoo. Its like in the states, you go to horse country tennesse your not going to get a city guy from new york. You can have an arranged love marriage but if your a person with a really outgoing personlity and lots of various intrests it takes time to find someone compatible. You might need to place ads of what you want online and in the papers and then goto kerala to be more successful.
1. I think its cool to analyze the pros and cons of being single and who it does or does not work for in the long run. Personality,Health, Money and Physical appearance are the key factors I think.
good video bt dont agree wth th views on arranged marriages...it works more thn love marriages and itz never forced now a days and itz ur choice whether u wanna marry him/her...just bcoz u met tht person thru parents rather thn in a pub or cinema doesnt mean tht it is bad...
Well made. If you want to avoid the whole arranged marriage get up, do what I plan to do. Go to med school! Ha. Of course, if that's not an option, you should consider talking to your parents. Arranged marriages are just kind of goofy nowadays although I guess they work.
Brilliant, Deepti. Being an Indian (malu) from the US like you who's been living in India now for 2 years, the part that totally rubbed me the wrong way is how if one says that they have any allegiance to America (or wanting to live there), they're considered "Bad Indians". I've gotten this many time, just like you did with, "that means you hate Indians."
Keep going with directing- you've CLEARLY got talent and if you need an actor for something, let me know. :)
Well I have to say this was a very well made video. Well everyone have different opinion about marriage according to were they are living.I don't agree with the arrange marriage fact!!!
You did justice to your perspective with fabulous editing. I believe in "Different strokes for different folks". So none can generalise a rule for everyone. Since your folks in India have imaginary depiction of America, I am not surprised to hear all those comments. Same is true for folks in America have derogative opinions of India. Good of both worlds would be a better situation. Irony of the matter is - People love to hate a way of life more than to borrow good from it...Good work, Deepti.
Hope you get married soon if you have not already got married by now. Video is enjoyable and depicts the state of a person at the crossroad of life. Conversion by forefathers has also added a new dimension to a culture that is hard to forego. Wishing you all the best.
This was an excellent documentary. I wish you would post an update on this...what have you done since...have you gotten married now?
