saw ZPZ last night at the Crest Theater in Sacramento. amazing. and yet, can't help but wonder just how much more amazing FZ would have been to seen in concert. thanks Frank!
Don't understand the Frank haters, naysayers, ignorers. Hey, he may get a bit potty mouth or cutting for you, but if those little things bother you in excess, then you're missing out on a LOT of genius music. But if you can't take his social criticism, maybe, just maybe, it's hitting too close to home, and what you hate most is that, yes little brotha and sista, he's talking 'bout you!
@probrojeffro No I'm cool with it. Frank's a sexist homophobic dick who happens to be a fucking musical genius as well. No reason to ignore his insane skills both in writing and performance.
@MsKillah13 ; uh, Frank got Eric to play on Were only in it for the $. He kissed his ass, then had eric play into a reel to reel so he could copy his licks.
I was twenty eight years old working at a factory when an eighteen year old chick started working there. we started hanging out, didn't think about where it could lead. Then I found out that she also had Apostrophe, we have been married now for ten years.
Why would anyone compare a musical cover comedian to a music legend, who writes original, in both senses of the word, songs. It's like comparing used apples and psychedelic oranges.
What's this about Weird Al? I love Al, but he's all about the words and the music is just a slight push from the original - almost a "cover" as it were. Zappa is all about the music. All the intensity is there.. Then, to satisfy demand to have lyrics at all, he gets out his big fat bright colored crayons and writes something that he finds amusing.
This is the major difference between zappa and yankovic who are constantly compared due to thier songs mainly being comedic, however yankovic is a clown who changes words while zappa is a musical badass
@AzariaViviana - Don't forget the children of all those older guys, I'm one of them! I was brought up on Frank Zappa, among others, but Frank was a mainstay in our household. We had at least 30 of those green jewel cases made by RycoDisk that Frank released his CD-albums on. Long Live the King of Cool Tunes!
@MrBird58 A bazaar is similar to a flea market, the word you are looking for is bizarre, meanig odd or unusual. Frank was an extremely prolific musician and writer of many types of music. He wrote his music by hand and his transcripts look like they were produced by a machine. The archive of his unpublished music fills a wharehouse. He was an amazing and original talent. His passing is sorely felt.
One of his best instrumentals ever, and yes, FZ is credited with playing the fuzz bass on Apostrophe, according the the LP sleeve notes. I saw Zappa Plays Zappa doing this only two days ago and their bassist was very good, but here was only one FZ.
@ThievingFox I wasnt my dad hates rock music all together and my mom never liked zappa, im 14 and i found him on my own. and i just started listening to him, i always knew who he was but i never actually decided to check him out until i was looking at an iron maiden album and the guitarist were wearing shirts that said "were not an english rock band were just dental floss salesman from montana" so i finnaly decided to look him up last week now i cant stop listening
@AzariaViviana I only just qualify at the top range of your survey, having turned 45 recently and I love seeing a young girl getting it. Trying to get my daughter into it as well (12yo) and she is responding, although slowly.
@AzariaViviana you forgot a few age groups. I'm 52 and still listen to Zappa as does me soon to be 75 yr old father. Who, by the way still rides his bike daily and has been since the mid 1950's......always has and will ride American Iron!!!!!
@stevecrosby99 Jack Bruce from Cream was credited on the album for co-writing this song with Zappa. Thought in an interview he said he didn't play the bass, but the Cello parts. (Seeing as there are no Cello parts, that's kind of odd).
Frank Zappa was quoted that he did play the bass guitar on this song, as he was a friend of the drummer Jim Gordon.
Me too! As far away as South Africa we were blown away by him. My friends and I would save up and give people money who were traveling to the US to buy and bring back his albums for us.
Frank Zappa didn't write music. He made sculptures. Sculptures out of sound. If you could see them they'd have about 200 different limbs, eyes, mouths, noses, and would probably be painted in every colour you could think of
Love the bass line on this song, didnt realize that jack bruce was doing the bass line. the whole album is tight. frank was a pioneer for those of us who love electronica.
OK, so Frank was wierd. Yeah, he was "out there" alright! That's probably why he never achieved mainstream popularity. But he was a fine composer and guitarist. There are those of us who know...
hahahahah Zappa was a Dr. of music. A Doctorate's Degree! Every little nuance was written into the music. He intimidated other artists when they worked with him because he was so far ahead of them.
Jack Bruce plays bass on this! He was supposed to play the cello, but the one they brought
for him was too bad so it ended up with a jam with the bass.
