  • The long exposure time pass really intrigues me! how was this done?

Fantastic film. I really appreciate the cinematography used here and the direction is just superb.

Curious, what was the primary ISO used here?

  • music is in nature

  • I’m very curious about your DSLR workflow. What’s about it? pls.

  • This is an awesome film, Gyton Grantley (Underbelly's - Carl "Fat Boy" Williams) is a terrific actor, his hand gestures made be believe that he was a Maestro and at the end, he was actually happy, at peace. Combine that with Adam Antony's genius natural light camera work, the great city of Sydney and a moving script depicting mental illness and homelessness. This is truly a moving film.

  • Omg this was amazing! No offence but this shouldve gotten first instead of tht animal beatbox one :L

  • Like if you're watching this because of an Unthought Known video :O

  • @LikuifiX I first head Unthought known at the end of episode 2x21 of "Castle" and went hunting, I found the Fan video by Inmytre2003 that included sections from "The Maestro". The author left breadcrumbs to here.

  • @DiracSoftware I also would like to see this film merged completely with unthought known to make one awesome music video. I am not sure what Eddie and the boys would say to this, nor the score composer of The Maestro who did a good job.

  • IF this doesnt deserve to win, then nothing does.

  • my favorite!!

  • ... well, at least it looked nice.

  • I love The music someone know the title

  • @variosyjuegos The music was all composed for the film by Benjamin Speed.

  • He's obviously just some strung out hobo who smoked assloads of meth before going out for a walk that night.

  • I was doing a film for 2011 but couldn't submit on time, but after seen that ridiculous Animal beet box thing won I though that was killing talented people like you to submit videos like this. everyone doing hard thing to win that then stupid beat box .. Mate this is really nice and great work.

  • Honestly A LOT of crap gets into tropfest, I don't how? but it does. But this was beautiful. Music was a little weak but done well. But other than that, it was great, well made, a solid idea, executed very well.

  • how could this be one of the finalists this year???

nothin special, not funny at all. what does this so called short film try to tell us, i wonder...

  • excelente!

  • ecxelente!

  • no meaning... no moral ... sorry but i didnt like this one at all.

  • An excellent short, I like the way the depth of field is used to isolate the protagonist. Music is a little weak, but well conducted.

  • He must have been at the Red Sea

  • really well made, well done

  • This one is just so stupid.

  • I love it.

  • He's HIGH.

  • good good stuff

  • visually stunning!

  • big woop @ technology. Who cares. It was boring and self-indulgent. Was like the film maker discovered after effects for the first time and went to town.

  • @locomangoz you can think it is self indulgent thats fine, however you should know most effects were actually done in camera, there was a real time pass done and then a long exposure time lapse pass, then the to images were comped together.

  • definetly the most technically sound entry of the tropfest, loved the filming technique used in this, visually intricate=awsome

  • My best film from tropfest... It was so deep.. i think it means no matter wht situation a maestro is in...he will always find his artistical powers. u can never stop him...

  • Loved the beginning but unfortunately lost me at the conducting. Looked fantastic tho.

  • What camera did you use to shoot this?

  • @imann3 canon 5d mk2 cheers

    tony

  • There should have been cats and dogs and cats and dogs and cats and dogs and it would have cleaned up.

  • I agree, how the hell did animal bx come first? It was just a bunch of teenagers getting high and failing to rap

  • Wow

  • Beautifully shot...

  • великолепно, браво!!!

  • Now that had poetry rhythm was cool & had a point direction and story unlike animal bx that just had poetry and rhythm and that's all;.

  • he looked after his glasses well, not one scratch on them

  • @jamiespinks why the fuck would they be scratched?

  • @ThisOneGuyRightHere The Maestro is homeless, having a clean pair of glasses is hard to achieve.

They are necessary for the camera work using reflections and being able to see his facial expressions properly.

Perhaps it is a statement about the free health service in Australia

    - If you have poor vision, you can have nice shiny glasses

    - If you have a mental illness, you are out on the street

At least he can see clearly how destitute he is.

  • bad conducting, spoiled it for me. unfortunately, because I rather like the idea.

  • @VictorMLudwig because a homeless person is supposed to be a great conductor, right?

  • this was my favorite

  • But does he have a golden voice?

  • @RaginBu11 Please marry me haha (:

  • Fantastic!!!!!

  • The Key is at 1:00 on the poster

  • where was the key?

  • sure winner, owns the bloody animal shit

  • This is beautiful...

If you need a tip for the standard of film that will win next year please head to my channel. In the interest of sharing creativity..

  • Only problem is that he isn't actually conducting. The pattern is simple and would've added more realism to the film without any extra effort.

  • I want the drugs that he's on.

  • maybe he should bathe in that ocean...

  • This is by far my favorite...this should have won...

  • And that's what happens when you take acid.

  • @ tony gardiner - did you use any portable lighting on the realtime hobo nightshots or was it purely ISO and exposure?

  • @mbalfour all available light, alot of recce'ing went into it though to find the right locations with the right light and the 50mm L series 1.2 and 24mm L series 1.4 were my best friends!

  • Beautiful.

  • Is he Aang from The Last Airbender?

  • @MoonFooABC his the light bender..lol

  • Love this concept - and beautifully filmed!

  • we all wish we were in control of something>anything>great short

  • BRAVO

  • howd they do those light things

  • I don't understand... are we supposed to take this literally?

  • great

  • Who let this retarded hobo wizard out of his cage?

  • Dogs & cats & dog & cats Monk Key

  • 5:11 water bend!

  • August what?

  • @leadpipepro

August Rush, what a great movie.

  • hes a light and water BENDER!!! haha

  • doesn't this clip resemble a key scene from August Rush?

  • drugs are a hell of a thing

  • interesting....

  • Looks like someone introduced THE MAESTRO to THE ACID PILL

  • coke product placement?

  • What kind of camera did you use?

  • @BiGgDrE5000

I was going to ask the same thing, but I doubt anyone will know. However, if I had to guess, I'd say either the 5D Mark II or a RED camera.

  • @Michaeldoeslife tony gardiner here (i was the cinematographer on the masetro) this was all shot using the 5d mkII boith the timelapse and real time

  • @skippy2095

Awesome. Thanks for the conformation! You did an extraordinary job as the DP. It literally couldn't have been any better. You should, if you don't already, look into doing this for a living.

  • thanks watch, dont fish and drive!

  • AMAZING CAMERA SHOTS

  • great work by far the best

  • This movie is so artistic that most people won't get it.

  • 2:38 is that a dead parakeet in his pocket??

  • wow

  • freddy's sweater...

  • AMAZING

  • should I know tomatos?

  • No words for this one, really...by far the best of all of them.

  • The Rubbish ones always come first. That's why I stopped going. This has great imagination, cinematography, editing, colours, music etc etc etc. Definitely should of come first.

  • nice effects

  • Definitely deserved first place. A magical film.

  • A masterpiece ! Visually exceptional.

  • wats the name of the song an wer can i hear it alll i love this film absolutley fabulous! loved pearing into his creative insanity!

  • The amount of effort put into this one compared to that of the winner is un-comparable. The winner was done in a room with stop motion, this takes it to the next level.

  • GOOSEBUMPSSSSS

  • Altiyan Childs?

  • The best, it should have won first place.

    Well done Adam on third.

  • Loved this, fabulous shooting.

  • Comment removed

  • Why didn't this win? It's such an amazing clip

  • i cant seem to make sense of it...my only logiccal reasoning is either

    a) he's on some craaazzzyy drug

    b) he's just straight up insane

    c) he's got telekinetic powers that make him move things, with HIS MIND!!

...thats all i took from it

  • @MastaG11 its about the power of imagination and creativity- how its everywhere at any given point, any given place, and even the most overlooked person can use its power to wonderful affect.

  • wow this is so......wow :O

  • IN TERMS OF SOUND, THIS OWNS DOG CAT DOG CAT

  • You were my choice Adam... watching it live in the Domain on Sunday night on the big screen really gave your movie impact... congratulations on a job well done.

  • Can anyone find the key in this one?

  • @xazn4lyfx 0.59

  • COCAINE IS A HELLA OF A DRUG!!!!

  • @carlosperu11 METH* ;)

  • Cooooool !!

  • From one film maker to another... awesome job man! Would like to see some of the director's other work : ) Handsdown winner!

  • DKNY undies!

  • absolutely should have won, amazing film. well done guys.

  • Very nice effects, but i love the film overall - very well done! :)
