This is an awesome film, Gyton Grantley (Underbelly's - Carl "Fat Boy" Williams) is a terrific actor, his hand gestures made be believe that he was a Maestro and at the end, he was actually happy, at peace. Combine that with Adam Antony's genius natural light camera work, the great city of Sydney and a moving script depicting mental illness and homelessness. This is truly a moving film.
@LikuifiX I first head Unthought known at the end of episode 2x21 of "Castle" and went hunting, I found the Fan video by Inmytre2003 that included sections from "The Maestro". The author left breadcrumbs to here.
@DiracSoftware I also would like to see this film merged completely with unthought known to make one awesome music video. I am not sure what Eddie and the boys would say to this, nor the score composer of The Maestro who did a good job.
I was doing a film for 2011 but couldn't submit on time, but after seen that ridiculous Animal beet box thing won I though that was killing talented people like you to submit videos like this. everyone doing hard thing to win that then stupid beat box .. Mate this is really nice and great work.
Honestly A LOT of crap gets into tropfest, I don't how? but it does. But this was beautiful. Music was a little weak but done well. But other than that, it was great, well made, a solid idea, executed very well.
big woop @ technology. Who cares. It was boring and self-indulgent. Was like the film maker discovered after effects for the first time and went to town.
@locomangoz you can think it is self indulgent thats fine, however you should know most effects were actually done in camera, there was a real time pass done and then a long exposure time lapse pass, then the to images were comped together.
My best film from tropfest... It was so deep.. i think it means no matter wht situation a maestro is in...he will always find his artistical powers. u can never stop him...
@mbalfour all available light, alot of recce'ing went into it though to find the right locations with the right light and the 50mm L series 1.2 and 24mm L series 1.4 were my best friends!
Awesome. Thanks for the conformation! You did an extraordinary job as the DP. It literally couldn't have been any better. You should, if you don't already, look into doing this for a living.
The Rubbish ones always come first. That's why I stopped going. This has great imagination, cinematography, editing, colours, music etc etc etc. Definitely should of come first.
The amount of effort put into this one compared to that of the winner is un-comparable. The winner was done in a room with stop motion, this takes it to the next level.
@MastaG11 its about the power of imagination and creativity- how its everywhere at any given point, any given place, and even the most overlooked person can use its power to wonderful affect.
You were my choice Adam... watching it live in the Domain on Sunday night on the big screen really gave your movie impact... congratulations on a job well done.
The long exposure time pass really intrigues me! how was this done?
Fantastic film. I really appreciate the cinematography used here and the direction is just superb.
Curious, what was the primary ISO used here?

An excellent short, I like the way the depth of field is used to isolate the protagonist. Music is a little weak, but well conducted.

he looked after his glasses well, not one scratch on them
jamiespinks 1 year ago 20
@jamiespinks why the fuck would they be scratched?
ThisOneGuyRightHere 5 months ago
@ThisOneGuyRightHere The Maestro is homeless, having a clean pair of glasses is hard to achieve.
They are necessary for the camera work using reflections and being able to see his facial expressions properly.
Perhaps it is a statement about the free health service in Australia
- If you have poor vision, you can have nice shiny glasses
- If you have a mental illness, you are out on the street
At least he can see clearly how destitute he is.

bad conducting, spoiled it for me. unfortunately, because I rather like the idea.
