flcl had hillarity and insanity while still having a feeling of it being profound, but it was never profoundly sad except at the very end.

Even though FLCL was a really funny anime, it actually has a much deeper side which I don't think many people seem to see. The more times I watched though, the more I picked up on those things. In any case it was a great show if not for the depth, for the comedy. And for everyone discussing EVA, it actually puts off a lot of people too because they just don't get it. ;)

i watched the first episode of this anime and this is one of very little amount of animes I actually COULDN'T stand. this anime sucks, this song sucks too. Please tell me something to change my mind about the anime, as for the song - it's only suitable for sad moments in movies, shitty movies.

FLCL isn't supposed to be watched like a normal show. It is not so much a real show as an experimental film. It was created as a chance to let the animators at Gainax stretch their muscles after Evangelion.

By itself, it is pretty meaningless, but you really have to appreciate it as a testing ground for techniques that would show up in future, more coherent Gainax productions.

The artwork in FLCL is undeniably beautiful, the animation is fluid and the themes are interesting at least.

Artwork means nothing if story/theme/point/lesson isn't there. To be honest I couldn't get past the first episode - it's like an acid trip, in other words - meaningless. As for Evangelion... i've never seen it (yet). Do you recommend it? I hear either it's the worst or the best. If I tell you I enjoyed Black Lagoon, Gungrave, Deathnote, Berzerk, Bebop, Trigun, NHK...ETC... would you still recommend it?

The story is tough to follow, but it is there, along with some actually fairly strong themes. But, as I said, it is primarily an animator's playground, I think you are missing out if you aren't willing to just roll with it. You just have to have a high tolerance for visual metaphor. Plus, the first episode is crazier than most and the series settles down by the second episode.

If you can't sit through FLCL, I wouldn't recommend Evangelion, if only because the end is 10x crazier than FLCL.

actually, eva is a very psychological type of anime. you have to understand that there were kids used to control robots that had humans put into it. also the tension on the mind can drive them insane. thats why it seems so odd. the creators probably wanted the viewers to see how it is for them or something. i also didnt understand it at first. i agree the ending is also odd but it isnt up to the point where the black screen with white text appears frequently. eva death and rebirth explain a bit

evangelion is a unique anime. if im correct, the creator of eva actually was going through some serious times during the creation of eva. so a bit of his "insanity" was dropped into eva and it spread a bit too much. its a unique anime, as i have said, and its supposed to be paid close attention to. read my other comment i accidently wrote to perigeez
