  • how much did that ornament weigh (approximately)? Looks like it would have been big enough to bend the branch of the tree.

I wish I had a decent video camera, I'd post some of my stuff too.

Oh, not sure you answered this from another video, but what glue gun are you using? I've heard of a lot of stories of some where the glue just comes out the wrong end or continually flows, neither of which is good, and just don't want to waste money on bad tools.

    Thanks,

  • @nicholls611 Not sure on the weigh of the ornament but it's hollow, Not sure on the brand it's an industrial glue gun.

  • Hey Carl, I was wondering if you have have a collection of ornaments that you put on your Christmas tree every year, and if so could we see a picture of it?

  • @soulcade I don't, I have given most of them away to friends and family over the years.

  • Thanks Carl- I watched the video again and I see it now. I'm still surprised that you don't use some fancy hollowing tool with a curved arm or one of those with a disc on the end. I thought I was going to have to get one of those to be able to do this sort of hollowing. Nice to know I don't have to get another tool.

  • Donna,

I do have both of those tools, for doing for reaching around the corners on bigger pieces, but for something simple like this, a small bowl gouge will work fine. Getting more tools; however, is part of the fun. :) And isn't Christmas coming up?

  • Hi Carl- I've always wanted to make some like this. I have no trouble with spindles but I seem to get catches whenever I go to interiors. What tool(s) did you use for the inside hollowing? It looked like a square-ended scraper to me, but it wasn't too clear. tia Donna Menke

  • Hi Donna,

I used a small 1/4" bowl gouge to hollow it out.

    Carl

  • What type of hot glue do you use for your glue blocks so that you have a strong enough hold? Love your videos. Brad

  • I am not sure about the brand, I just picked it up at a craft store. Just make sure it is good and hot when putting the pieces together.

  • Carl just awsome!!!!!!! I will try to make a few ornaments for our christmas fair in November

    thanks for the insperation

  • Thank you,

  • Very nice work carl all the best john.

  • Thanks John,

  • So i think i'll have to use a bolt with a bigger head on it or just use a small pair of vice grips to tighten it. They just made the handles to cheaply. Kinda suprised there are 2 handles instead of just one. I'll have to make a table for it because a regular table height is a little to tall for me. Several inches i think. I can put that table on wheels and roll it outside on nice days. You can always put an extention bed on it to. Can't think of anything else right now to say about it. Leonard

  • Great idea Leonard roll it out side on nice days. Glad to hear you got it.

  • There is a washer and a retainer ring that holds it together. It looks like the groove on the Tailstock lead screw for the retaining ring isn't deep enough. So the ring pops out of the slot. They are sending some new parts. It's not hard to work on. They have 2 tool rest lock handles which are on 2 allen wrench head screws to hold the tool rest in place. They are plastic and don't work well. I used an allen wrench to tighten the screws. But eventually the allen wrench will strip the head.

  • The Shop Fox W1752 Lathe arrived at about 7:30 pm on Thursday night. Nice little lathe. It only takes maybe 10 minutes to set up and clean. They put oil on it before packaging. Runs pretty quiet and the belt is pretty easy to change for different speeds. There was a problem with being able to run the quill up tight to the wood piece. It wouldn't snug up to the wood very well.I called the dealer and they walked me through taking the tailstock apart. Found out the rubber collar was missing.

  • That ornament should be the best one.

  • Right at 2000.

    Carl

  • Another great job Carl. Thanks for all your videos'

  • Thank you!

  • awesome job!

  • Thank you!

  • As always great stuff !

  • Nice project Carl, I have a feeling there will be several hanging from my tree this year.

  • Send some pictures.

  • Carl is that the same wood i sent if so you sure made it look allot better than anything I made from it you got talent Just a question How did you measure the end on the finials to make sure they would fit in the globe or did you just sand till they fit. Thanks for your response

  • Hi Allen,

Yes, it was the sycamore you sent to me. Thank you. I use calipers, did I cut that out of the video. Oops. Sorry. I wanted them to fit farely snug so that they would be centered.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Wow, that looks good. I think I know what a few people on my list will get for Christmas this year!

  • :)

  • FANTASTIC.......nice job as always

  • Thank you.

  • Another great job, Carl. I wish I could do my hollowing as easily as you do. Seems I'm always getting horrendous catches and then resorting to scrapers.

  • Thank you. I still get catches sometimes too. I use a scraper when I get walls thinned down.

    Carl

  • lovely piece of work Carl great job as always

    take care

    Robbie

    Take Care,

    Carl

  • Thank you.

  • Master Carl, will you make a menorah too?

  • I might be able to, but I am not sure about bending the wood. I will have to look into to it.

    Carl

  • Looks great. Im definitly going to come back to this when making christmas presents
