I just absolutely lovvvvedddd this movie as a kid...it inspired me all the way to the fridge...really...I did love it..I remember going outside and trying to let "some beat " inspire me...plus...just loved some of those songs...I was so hurt by some GUY...that funny butterflies really hit home when he BROKE UP w/ me...ahhh...memory...lane......
They showed this on the 3:30 Movie one afternoon in 1979. It was fine as it started--the theme they played over the opening credits was o.k. ("She wears clothes like a Billie should wear")--and wow, what a cute hair style she had: it looked really contemporary, not like the flip she wore on "Patty Duke." I got as far as Dick Sargent making small talk with Billie's Dad--to me, the general gist of his talk during the 70s seemed very dated & filled with gender discrimination, so I turned it off.
9 years old...crouching under a coffee table in my mothers living room while she was on the phone in the next room. I fell in...lust..with Patty Duke...at that age. Never knew the name of this movie...until now. Thank you...for bringing back memories of my childhood.
I remember watching this one on the WUHF Sunday Afternoon movie in the early '80's and back then Patty was lookin' pretty good in those shorts to this adolescent lad.
Have looked for "Billie" for years, but couldn't remember the name. I went outside and tried to get "THE BEAT" and run fast. I was 10 at the time. It was a fave. Couldn't ever find anyone who had heard of it. Thanks for sharing it!
The lead dancer in the locker room scene was Tom Cahill. We were both in Headquarter's Platoon of the 535th. Engr. Co. stationed at Taylor Barracks outside of Mannheim, Germany in the early 60's. Does anyone happen to know what happened to him. I saw him in a few other teen movies. Later he was dancing on Shindi or Hullabaloo. PFC Jim Plowman
my dad and mom took us to the drive in to see this movie when it came out. Yes, we were Patty Duke fans, but also because my name was "Billie". I was and still am a tom-boy, did all kinds of boy things, wanted to be like the boys. Am I a lesbian? No, very happily married, mother, and still tom-boy. Still a Patty Duke fan. Lots of good memories surround this clip.Thank you for them. I downloaded all 4.We have to remember the simpler times, not all this crap today. I just love stereotypical folks.
@4MaryAnna Studio vocalist Gail Heidman did the singing voice for Patty in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. In the same movie, singer Margaret Whiting provided a singing voice to Susan Hayward for her one song.
@JohnnyGNV thanks so much for answering my question. I was watching this clip again and couldn't help but laugh...gosh Patty looks terrible as a blonde. She looked so nice in her tv show with her brown hair.
Parents took me (age 7) and my sister to drive-in when it was first released and also bought us the LP. We were fans of the show, much cuter on the show, too butch in Billie. More depth in her voice than similar star Annette. Kind of thought this was long forgotten. Seeing it in a drive-in was fun, 1965.
Most look at this movie and compare Patty's (lesbian like) hair cut to the very Public lesbian Ellen Degeneres. I don't think because a woman has a short blond hair cut she is a lesbian. I have to admit it so cute Billie saying she wished she was a boy. LOL
Poor Patty, being forced to wear that awful hairdo. In her book, she said her managers made her keep bleaching her hair, until her scalp began developing sores. (Even without the sores, just making a girl LOOK like that constitutes abuse....)
Aww! I think her hair was cute it was like a blond helmet. But your right poor Patty she was forced to do a lot of thing as a child actor. I would not any child to be in show biz unless the parents have close supervision of the child and there agents.
I own the DVD, but if I didn't - If you pay for my digital cable I'd be able to watch it. I'm at war with Cablevision and refuse to give them ONE EXTRA PENNY of my own!!
Wow, the trailer alone has Charles Lane (RIP this month at 102 years of age), VO by Mason Adams (of Smucker's fame); Donna McKechnie, Jim Backus, choreography by David Winters (I think), shmaltz, a big dog, Patty Duke looking like a lesbian gym teacher, Jane Greer (!), the word 'sex', and gay guys dancing in the locker room. Wow. Clearly this is the greatest motion picture ever made. Thanks for posting.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes... no - one boy is straight. I love Jim Backus' line "I don't know why we sent her away to school when she could have done the same thing right here and much cheaper!" It was quite bold [for the '60s] to actually say the word "SEX."
I posted the trailer for all the reasons you mentioned!!!
You actually BOUGHT the movie!?!? I thought that I was the only one who bought it 40 years after it's release!!! So, is it better than the typical crap of the '60s, like I wrote above?
The 60s were full of fantasy Moves, TV show, etc... I wouldn't really call 60s entertanment crap. If you have watched today Movies and T.V. Im sure u would call that crap I know this movie is for young girls but I thought it was good and yes I can say it was cheesey! in its own way.
Not ALL.. just the beach movies, like I wrote way above this comment. I commend BILLIE for being more bold with its characters and even the "sex" angle. "This could make a cute B'way show," I thought.. Then I read the credits. The movie WAS adapted from a B'way show!! COOL
All she needed was the dot earrings and she would've been a full-fledged woman gym-teacher!

wow, it amazes me that there are films like this that we never get to see on British TV, but are worth a look.

Patty Duke did her own singing in "Valley Of The Dolls." Margaret Whiting dubbed the vocals for Susan Hayward in that film.
LouJGee 3 years ago
Does anybody know who did the singing for Neely O'Hara in Valley of the Dolls? It couldn't have been Patty, since her voice is barely passable.

I'm sure lots of people know, in fact I know...
Oh, I guess that YOU may want to know! Patty's vocals were dubbed by pop/jazz singer Margaret Whiting.

@rodanvideo Actually, singer Gail Heideman dubbed in vocals for Patty Duke in "Valley of the Dolls"--not Margaret Whiting.

@jmdocs : don't forget, the older sister is played by Susan Seaforth-Hayes, a daytime staple on "Days of Our Lives" since the late 60's.
