Don't confuse economic systems with the political systems, capitalism, communism and socialism are economical systems, democracy, dictatorship, teocracy are political systems, and one thing don't link to another ok?!
there's some dictatorship in the world that are capitalist, so keep your mind open to another things and possibilties
and openSource software ins't a instance of communism, it's just a instance of the humam capabilty to share things
Open Source is not communist, Linux for example was written by a man from Iceland, you can't get much more democratic. But what people fear about Communism is actually corruption of it. There is for more corruption of closed source software.
open source is not communism, it sounds like communism, but it isn't, it is simply letting people see the code behind their software, the way I see it, it is like putting a nutrition label on food, it is information, I always am amazed at what length microsoft will go through to keep us from knowing what the hell we are putting on our computers
The idea of Open Source, hobbyists writing stuff in there free time, is more anarchism than communism. Everybody is contributing (or not) without someone telling them to do.
But i think that the most open source code is actually written by professionals, and is used commercially, so it's capitalism too.^^
I disagree with everything this video says. Yes, I know it's "satire", but you see, I'm the biggest asshole in the world. I have to make everything about me and my agenda, because I'm a sociopath and I have the petty need to control everything.

Although I'll admit they suck and make the cards run hot as hell. At least I get SOME 3D acceleration o.o
open source software is the only application of communism that WORKS.
and so long as people enjoy making software it always will.
communism failed mainly because it made no mechanism for stopping assholes. it assumed nice citizens who would work to make the country better. it also failed to realize no one WANTS to work at mc Donalds, or do half the work that needs done.
software design is different in that its an art, and people will do art whether they get payed or not.
@tuseroni open source software is not true communism. the people who made the software are giving it away free of their own free will, as opposed to communism, where they are forced to do so.
@tuseroni Open Source and Free Software isn't even remotely tied to communism. In fact, it might be a lot closer to capitalism than proprietary software. Since everyone is competing on an equal field, the best and cheapest solutions survives. Where communism would have a tightly controlled system, most open source and free software isn't controlled at all, in fact everyone can even redistribute and sell it.
@JonJahren open source software DOES have some control on it, namely the GPL (or similar licenses) which say that you must provide the source for any changes made to software licensed by the GPL.
in capitalism you OWN the product you make. if i make an invention is OWN the invention, i can patent it, sell it, and have exclusive rights to it. communism everyone owns it. i MADE it but i dont have any more right to it than anyone else. open source is like that. i make the code but i dont own it.
@tuseroni You still own your code, copyright provides that. What the GPL prevents is for other people to take your code, close it and sell it. The software patent system is broken, so I don't regard software patents as valid. You own your code, no matter what claims you try to make otherwise. With GPLv2 you can even patent if, if you should be so inclined.
@tuseroni The problem with this is that artists think differently. If they don't get paid, all hell breaks loose (see also: MPAA, RIAA, WMG, etc.) Artists need to learn that art is not a necessity in life by any means and often doesn't even qualify as a full-time profession. For example, the only people who think music is critical to their life by any stretch of the imagination are ignorant teenagers (who, by the way, don't have any money in the first place and are quite content with pirating).
open source is freedom its like starwars the bad are told they are good and the good guys are the enemy. you dont pay to talk and communicate why should you have to do it with software
Open source is a dilemma, it's true that open source harms the economy on the other hand no body wants closed standards and monopoly.Technically it's almost impossible to sell open source let alone to create a thriving business around it (with some notable exceptions though)
@cr561979 Open source doesn't harm the economy. Some people decided tu patent software to make profit but that doesn't mean that no lucrative software is harming anyone. Let's put an example, you want some mayonnais on your food, you have 3 options, buy a patented good looking mayo, buy housemade mayo from a neighbor or make your own with an egg, oil, salt and lemon. if you make your own or buy from a neighbor you are not harming the mayo industry, you are just being free.
I'm against patents but your mayonnaise parable isn't sound at all because articles of food ARE generally patented (As are most consumer products today) which doesn't present a problem in the first place since "your mom" is free to reproduce the recipe (given she knows the ingredients) but she can't make money of it.But yes "your mom" could harm the mayonnaise manufacturer if she could convince an entire nation to do the same. Why do you think the industry is against Linux ?
@cr561979 Privative software is against GNU/Linux because they are being left behind, open source technology is more advaced and far more efficient. Protecting the privative software companies is to protect just the big company leaders and they don't care about the workers, so yeah, for a free mankind with autonomous access to technology I encourage people to use open source.
@cr561979 Tell that to companies what makes big money just simply with open source. Like Mandriva, Red Hat. There are so many companies what just sell open source software and none of the proprietary software. And they does not harm economy at all. The open source markets are working exactly in the original idea as the capitalism was meant. The best wins. And new companies gets started and old ones get drived to bankrupt. Companies stay small and so on they offers more jobs than bigger ones.
I don't know where people get this from but the facts are, Mandriva has repeatedly announced bankruptcy (last time i checked a couple weeks ago).Novell has been struggling to survive until they signed a deal with Microshaft worth 250 million...the list goes on and on.There are very few like RedHat who made a fortune primarily on support.
"Companies stay small and so on they offers more jobs than bigger ones."
Dude don't drink to much, M$ employs 100'000 people ! Canonical 300.
@cr561979 Mandriva was near bankrupt in many years ago (2005). But it survived from it. What is very rare thing in France. It got financial going fine but now there are again problems but there are few parties who would like to buy it. There comes times when all companies has problems, not just open source ones. It can be enough that your sell drops 10% and you are out. And supporting FOSS is FOSS. Few friends of mine has support for few FOSS.
@cr561979 And there are multiple studies that show that bigger the company, less it will need workers than what would be needed when there are multiple smaller companies. Same time they will take bigger share from the markets. It is counted that it is about 30-35% what big companies needs workers than what would be needed if there would be multiple smaller companies. More competition and more offerings for all customers.
I despise monopolys but govenmants don't really care wheter M$ has an unethical business going as long as their profitable.Surely a centralized monopoly won't employ as many people as would dozens of competing small companys.Efficiency is a common business practice.
But then again its comparing apples to bananas because FOSS hardly generates any income.Summa summarun you end up having a bunch of corporations not being self-sustainable.Many of those (so called) surveys omit this fact.
@cr561979 Oh and forgot to mention. Novells and Mandrivas problems comes as well from Canonical. Canonical has "magical pocket" where they get millions without problems. Mark Shuttleworth brought un-balance to linux distributors. Instead offering money for them by making Ad's or hiring people to upstream projects. Mark started own distro what does not help upstreams at all, does try to get users from to use it etc. Others companies does not have magical pocket behind them.
I disagree, Mark Shuttleworth is a blessing, he has brought an end to
the CHA-OS.Frankly i don't care about Mandriva or Novell if they can't get their business right. We're living in a meritocracy that's how our society is structured. If you cant stand the heat, get out of business.Go ask PSA-Citroen,VW,Nestle,Daimler-Benz,Novartis etc...do they play nice ? Of course not, they do lobbying, bribe of politicians etc.Thats why FOSS will fail because its out of touch with reality.
@cr561979 Why blessing? Ubuntu use exactly same Linux OS as any other Linux distribution there. Canonical has brought nothing than own marketing of Ubuntu. And because you do not care about who is twisting the markets without letting markets to rule that good product survives and it is allowed to someone drive competitors away with unethical ways, you will never understand why Canonical has negative effect for FOSS. You can not start company and competite against Microsoft, can you?
You misunderstood mate i'm not advocating unethical business behavior as i wouldn't advocate performance enhancing substance abuse in professional sports,i just don't live in Fairytale World.
BTW don't you think its morally repugnant to accuse Canonical of having an negative impact on Linux ? I mean this guy has spent millions out of his own pockets and now he's Dr.Evil ? Linux used to be a terminal fetish OS with literary no recognition, therefore such claims are @ best silly.
@cr561979 If you cosider the "economy" to be that of the people that restricts users freedoms then yes, it does harm it.
And you can sell free software (open source as you call it), if someone is going to pay for it. This usually happends when you have something original to offer, i mean, you have something that you developed and can't be found elsewhere. And I think this should be that way, so to profit whith it you dont need to cut user's freedoms. See The Free Software Definition for details.
this was his first video, and it got me interested, and eventually lead to me now using linux (Ubuntu 10.04, with more complicated OS in VM) and Chromium. so ya, and maybe his opinion changed, if this wasnt a joke in the first place ;)
If communism is that one party (government) is saying what you buy, what you use and when you update. Then the communism is what closed source, closed standards, patents etc are doing.
Microsoft tells what you buy, what you use and when you update. User has no freedom to choose what software to use, how to improve the software, how to solve problems, how to help other users with their problems etc.
@TheFri13 That is a misconception, communism doesn't make people to obey like machines, that is the uncle Sam vision of communism. Communism means that there is no propietary, private property in the industry, distinction between workers involved un the production, etc., in open source it is the same, there is no owner of the source code, development is not restricted to a group and so on. You can say it is real freedom, not like the capitalist parody of freedom.
@MullenThomas1507 That was my point. That IF communism is what is told to the people (the uncle Sam vision), they are itself supporting the communism.
In US, people are frightened so badly about communism and socialism that they can not even recognize what it really is. It is sad and actually terrifying how it is so easy to control mass with media (Fox news, NYT etc).
Same thing is on closed vs open source fight. How open is bad etc etc.
@TheFri13 Yeah, in the U.S. there are many cases where privative software companies take to trial (don't know if I said properly) open source developers with the argument that they steal from the privative software. This is not true of course, but the jury most of the times get tricked by the lawyers to believe that open source is like pirate software. Sad indeed.
@MullenThomas1507 I did not know that would be even a common function in U.S. But it is easy to do and it happens in all countries. But thats why open source coder should not take the job where coder is coding software what is same as what he does on own time. Or then participate the projects what are on same software class. That is sad that jury is so easy in simple cases to get believe what wanted.
that was the most stupid video i have ever seen. you gave absolutely no reasoning why open source is bad. all you did was a stupid voice. like that is going to compel us to agree with you, you loser
Worse than any form of communism is the bullshit Microsoft spread about it and why? because my dumb freind that make lots of lovely fat cash out of saps like you for something you could get on freeware for nothing! next time you buy MS software ask for the source material too, MS is the son of Satan...and run by large corporations who get work done for them by lowly paid engineers and keep all the profits themselves...Bill Gates you are a THIEVING CUNT
@finnsia To put it simply: with open source, the user (or community) has power over the software, with closed source, the maker (or corporation) dictates what the software does.
No, Opera is not open source. It's freeware, similar to Internet Explorer in many respects... it's technically 'free' as in 'free beer' but Free/Open Source Software gives you the 'freedom' to examine or change the source code and use the program in any way you see fit. I would recommend checking out gnu (dot) org or fsf (dot) org for more detailed info.
Communism = Everything you make belongs to the state, making money is bad.
Open Source = If you like, you could give it and its design away, and let others improve it. Charging for support is a good way to make money if you like.
As far as I seen, many institutes, companies have signed contract with software vendors which limit them to use other software. They are restricting the development of IT industry and narrowed their exposure to other software in the world!
Srsly though, all my experiences with firefox, AOL and any thing that is not a built in art program I can mess around with and create something deacent without knowing anything about the program on a mac, have been quite frankly, terrible. They just don't work.
Firefox is the best, internet explorer sucks. Chrome is okay, but their is no need for it since we have firefox, it is like trying to reinvent the awesome wheel.
@chiffmonkey Well that came out of your arse. Yes, community input may mean more development. However, that may just as well end up like me trying to perform arc welding on a coffee cup. I.E. idiots doing stupid shit.
Yes, Internet Explorer is all bad. But that's just a generalisation. I'm sure there are proper closed-source browsers out there.. Even though I know of none :).
Phew, it's great to know all open source software is officially licensed under the OSI approved licenses ain't it, I wouldn't trust those EULA though, I can't use Microsoft software to distribute nuclear material...
The OSI does not control the licenses, nor are they the ones writing or modifying them. In fact, the most popular "Open Source software license" is the GNU GPL, which is actually, by the GPL itself, FREE SOFTWARE, not Open Source. The man responsible for the GPL is Richard Stallman, and openly and personally hates the term Open Source and the corrupt ideals behind it.
Heh, the best thing to do is splice the good points of all ideologies such as communism, socialism and capitalism all under one roof. Everyone's rich, everyone can speak out and kick evil government's ass if they wanted to with no fear.
@NickAllenStudios I dunno... IE6 was OK whereas Firefox has mut\ated into an overbloated disaster that makes IE7 look lightweight (IE8's unredemable)! Personally, I use KMeleon (which IS open source) and Lynx (ditto), but revert to IE if I want to go on a site that won't open on non-mainstream browsers.
If any of you got mis leaded by this video, you should certainly read about "Richard Stallman".. open source is not like communism agenda of "food for lazy" instead "freedom to live"
lol So, can I take it that you DO like OpenSource?

Same time they will take bigger share from the markets. It is counted that it is about 30-35% what big companies needs workers than what would be needed if there would be multiple smaller companies. More competition and more offerings for all customers.
TheFri13 1 year ago
@TheFri13
I despise monopolys but govenmants don't really care wheter M$ has an unethical business going as long as their profitable.Surely a centralized monopoly won't employ as many people as would dozens of competing small companys.Efficiency is a common business practice.
But then again its comparing apples to bananas because FOSS hardly generates any income.Summa summarun you end up having a bunch of corporations not being self-sustainable.Many of those (so called) surveys omit this fact.
cr561979 1 year ago
@cr561979 Oh and forgot to mention. Novells and Mandrivas problems comes as well from Canonical. Canonical has "magical pocket" where they get millions without problems. Mark Shuttleworth brought un-balance to linux distributors. Instead offering money for them by making Ad's or hiring people to upstream projects. Mark started own distro what does not help upstreams at all, does try to get users from to use it etc. Others companies does not have magical pocket behind them.
TheFri13 1 year ago
@TheFri13
Of course not, they do lobbying, bribe of politicians etc.Thats why FOSS will fail because its out of touch with reality.
cr561979 1 year ago
@cr561979 Why blessing? Ubuntu use exactly same Linux OS as any other Linux distribution there. Canonical has brought nothing than own marketing of Ubuntu. And because you do not care about who is twisting the markets without letting markets to rule that good product survives and it is allowed to someone drive competitors away with unethical ways, you will never understand why Canonical has negative effect for FOSS. You can not start company and competite against Microsoft, can you?
TheFri13 1 year ago
@TheFri13

@cr561979 "it's true that open source harms the economy..." <-- Facts, please?
Hallonkaffe 1 year ago
@cr561979 If you cosider the "economy" to be that of the people that restricts users freedoms then yes, it does harm it.
And you can sell free software (open source as you call it), if someone is going to pay for it. This usually happends when you have something original to offer, i mean, you have something that you developed and can't be found elsewhere. And I think this should be that way, so to profit whith it you dont need to cut user's freedoms. See The Free Software Definition for details.

TheFri13 1 year ago
@TheFri13 That is a misconception, communism doesn't make people to obey like machines, that is the uncle Sam vision of communism. Communism means that there is no propietary, private property in the industry, distinction between workers involved un the production, etc., in open source it is the same, there is no owner of the source code, development is not restricted to a group and so on. You can say it is real freedom, not like the capitalist parody of freedom.
MullenThomas1507 1 year ago
@MullenThomas1507 That was my point. That IF communism is what is told to the people (the uncle Sam vision), they are itself supporting the communism.
In US, people are frightened so badly about communism and socialism that they can not even recognize what it really is. It is sad and actually terrifying how it is so easy to control mass with media (Fox news, NYT etc).
Same thing is on closed vs open source fight. How open is bad etc etc.
TheFri13 1 year ago
@TheFri13 Yeah, in the U.S. there are many cases where privative software companies take to trial (don't know if I said properly) open source developers with the argument that they steal from the privative software. This is not true of course, but the jury most of the times get tricked by the lawyers to believe that open source is like pirate software. Sad indeed.
MullenThomas1507 1 year ago
@MullenThomas1507 I did not know that would be even a common function in U.S. But it is easy to do and it happens in all countries. But thats why open source coder should not take the job where coder is coding software what is same as what he does on own time. Or then participate the projects what are on same software class. That is sad that jury is so easy in simple cases to get believe what wanted.

Is Opera open source?
finnsia 2 years ago
@finnsia To put it simply: with open source, the user (or community) has power over the software, with closed source, the maker (or corporation) dictates what the software does.
Opera is closed source.
Basaltq 2 years ago
@finnsia

Phew, it's great to know all open source software is officially licensed under the OSI approved licenses ain't it, I wouldn't trust those EULA though, I can't use Microsoft software to distribute nuclear material...
DagothPie 2 years ago
The OSI does not control the licenses, nor are they the ones writing or modifying them. In fact, the most popular "Open Source software license" is the GNU GPL, which is actually, by the GPL itself, FREE SOFTWARE, not Open Source. The man responsible for the GPL is Richard Stallman, and openly and personally hates the term Open Source and the corrupt ideals behind it.
