Had you paid more attention to the presidential debates, it was brought out, and I wil say it again, there are over 700 US bases in 130 countries. Secondly, if you think this is too high a number, contact your senator and congressman and tell him you don't like that number and you want it to be lower. Now you have a little better idea why this country is crumbling and the dollar is becoming worthless. Cheers!

The tactic of allowing a protest & then suddenly cracking down on it is an oft used technique. The London police used it at the G8 summit a few months back and the New York cops also during the 2004 Repub. Nat. Convention (2 examples). The Italian piggies obviously are familiar with it aswell now.
