Shermer should read a bit more about biology. Evolution has repeated itself many times in the past. It's entirely possible that on another Earth-like planet that life will be quite similar. I've witnessed UFO's with skeptics before. Seeing them do crazy things in the sky that isn't possible in any "known crafts" on earth. And guess what the skeptics do? This is a huge difference in the comparison you are making. Although we do not know what dark matter is as of yet, we can readily measure its presence and effects empirically. Moreover, using the scientific method, everyone will be in agreement where the measurements are reproducible. Unlike UFO stories, which cannot be substantiated, what science measures is not apocryphal. UFO accounts however are not scientific by this measure and hence no more believable than Big Foot sightings.

Perhaps, but unlikely given the very asymmetrical bias toward matter in the universe. WIMPS, among other candidates are more likely but it is still unknown. As for videos, give us a link of an unamiguous footage of an alien craft. All you have are UFOs in the true sense: Unidentified Flying Objects. But you assume they are alien craft!

If they are indeed advanced military craft, then the military has alot to answer for in this age of over-reliance on oil. And you have it slightly wrong: 90% of UFO reporting is explainable and "fools tripping" as you say, the rest are unexplained- hence unidentified. Whether they are alien or not is irrelevant.

I don't about the accuracy of the exactitude of the statistics you are claiming, but there is no disagreement between us in what you conclude, that indeed UFOs in the true definition of the term are, yes, unidentifiable. As to your final point of this being irrelevant, I disagree. Balla assumes that if an object is unidentifiable, then it is of extra-terrestrial origin. There is no logical conclusion in this. Indeed, many "alien" craft have later turned out to be military secret craft.

I see your point about Balla's assumption and I agree with you. I say irrelevant because I don't see a distinction when it comes to investigating or dismissing their existence. The damn things are obviously in the world's airspace and it is laughable to watch the fashion in which these "debunkers" relate to Friedman and co. and argue reasons for dismissal that are weaker than the claims themselves. To me these sightings are not potent to make the claim they are extraterrestrial in nature. The Betty Hill case and the Travis Walton. The former described medical techniques that yet were not existant at the time of the incident. In the latter case, four to five people passed a lie detector, an astronomicall improbable event if they were lying. John Mach's work makes the case for alien visitations quite strong I think; these sightings don't because they can possibly be many non-alien things.
