Sorry Desertphile but you have destroyed my faith in your intelligence. But worse, you have given me and many others good reason to doubt your honesty and your motives. A little short of money are we? Wanna make a little bit selling your videoas do we? Well TOO BAD BUCKO! So how about you pedal that phoney ranch hand BULLSHIT somewhere else and quit giving honest ranch hands a bad name! I doubt you have been any closer to a ranch than Madison Avwnue!
I'm sorry if I'm mistaken. Did I miss something? I've always been told by those who should know... and it's always been my experience, that horses ALWAYS sleep standing. And if they're down, that's a sure sign there is something wrong that should be taken care of like NOW!!! And kicking one to get it to get to it's feet is NOT the kind of treatment I would recommend. So tell me Mr. ranch hand, who taught YOU to care for horses? Or any other animals for that matter.
waalll, I wanna tell ya pioneer. I'm real happy to be gettin' advice and comments about the habits of horses from a pretiguous, horse savvy orgainsation like "The youtube team." And I still say, if a horse lays down it's time to call a vet.
i've heard of horses that will try and bite a handler.heard it said it's anything from being an agrssive horse or the horse trying to establish dominance...
I saw your Creationist Challenge video and noticed you use Visual Basic 6 (the icon at the top left gave it away), unless you purposely used a different icon. :P You should try to program in C and Assembly, you'll learn a LOT about how your computer works. I know I did.
Is it common for horses just to lay down like that? Maybe I'm thinking of cows. Have you ever had the pleasure of performing horse foot maintenance? All that picking, clipping and filing. The frog thrush? Oh, and all of those bites on your back? yeeee haaa. In my wee years, I spent some time on my grandfathers farm in NC. It's been 2 decades and I actually still remember most of it. It's a completely different world. Lots of good times and aching bones.
"Is it common for horses just to lay down like that? Maybe I'm thinking of cows."
Both horses here nap while laying on the ground, often after rolling. Most of the time they sleep on their feet. According to Cherry Hill, wild horses lay down about 1 hours a day, and domestic horses in open fields lay down 2 hours a day. Domestic horses in stalls lay down about 3 hours per day.
Love it, DP! Another great glimpse of life on the ranch. I do think the horses were right, though; it was just too nice a day to work.
But then you wound up in the bottom of a hole the size of Kansas? Yikes! You must immediately go sleep with a horse, thereby re-establishing inner tranquility and the ability to roll over and play dead the next time the boss tells you to dig a hole. LOL
Thank you for sharing your life with us. You will probably not realize how happy you are there until you have left. Let me save you some time. You look damned happy with your life. Don't forget now ya hear.
Good singing again! Cute video. I love horses man, sturdy, strong, and you know you're a part of something when you saddle one up. Best part about riding a horse is when it's a little skittish and bucks you off, you dust yourself off, shake you head at the horse, and hop back on. Nothing like it.
geez.. I saw the trenches you've dug out... dang... I complain all day long about a hole I'm digging in the drive... a darn boulder has been pushed up from below by ground frost.
Well, the police and my wife, both of them says "no more blasting for you". I'm already known for my... *ahem*... knowledge of mixing highly reactive compounds around here.
So, I've since then disposed the last 50kg bag of ammonium nitrate.
Who want's to bet that is a dude ranch? Haha, you don't hold a candle to us real cowboys cuz.

@gobacktoyoursuburb ; We looked into "dude ranching," but the insurance against liability was too costly.

"i have never seen a horse lay down either. unless its dead."
They love to lay down in soft sand or soft dirt, usually about one hour a day. Wild horses do the same.
Desertphile 3 years ago 2
@LimpLoser Then obviously you don't work with horses.

Have you ever seen a horse? They can nap standing but they need to lie down for a good long sleep every few days.

I love that bit at the beginning (0:26) when you call to the horse and it gives that "f U" look and then turns away in disgust. Perfect.
