  • She sexualized men on a public level. What a pioneer.

  • More of this documentary please please please

  • Mae wishes she was like Marilyn! Mae sounds like a nasty bit of work

  • @TheTrippybutterfly

Well there you go then... Even though Mae wasn't typically beautiful, she didn't bow down to having plastic surgery.

  • @FactoryGirlWannabe so freaking True!!!

  • jean harlow just for some reason never made a big impression or impact to me anyway the only beauty of the 50s that was not altered and was naturally beautiful was Dorothy Dandridge

  • @MsMariah61 hell yeah!

  • 2011, Marilyn Monroe still considered to be Beautiful, Mae West oh please

  • @tinsnandwani Hell yeah!

  • @tinsnandwani Yes please!

  • Monroe was such a fake, and so are Madonna and Gaga, they just don't know it.

Mae West, the original blonde loud mouth!

  • @theyforcedmetosignup hell no, you mofo! I agree about lady gaga, but Marilyn Monroe never copied Mae West, Marilyn copied Jean Harlow because Jean was her "idol".I love Marilyn! I've never heard of this so called "Mae West".I've only heard of Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe! Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield are legends. More people have heard of Jayne and Marilyn. Mae West was jealous of them both because she wasn't popular anymore. I'm sorry but It's the truth.

  • @MMfan1997 Sorry, honey, you're obviously too young to know about Mae West. She was the original blonde bombshell and made it possible for Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield to do what they did. Mae West was a pioneer. They are all legends now.

  • @carrotjuse Don't call me honey! I know more about Marilyn Monroe than you! She said in her autobiography that she idolized Jean Harlow! NOT Mae West! Jayne Mansfield idolized Marilyn Monroe! AGAIN NOT MAE WEST! I do think Mae West was pretty,Jean Harlow was THE ORIGINAL BLONDE BOMBSHELL!

  • @MMfan1997 I'm not talking about who idolized who. Jean Harlow was born in 1911. Mae West was born in 1893. Mae's career began before Jean Harlow, Marilyn or Jayne were born. She was an outrageous blonde bombshell before Jean was out of diapers. Look it up.

When you don't have all the facts, displaying your ignorance in a public place makes you look bad. On the other hand, maybe you dont care, honey.

  • @carrotjuse I just care about Mae West at all!

  • @MMfan1997 I just care about Mae West at all too.

  • @carrotjuse So what? Jean Harlow was more know!

  • @MMfan1997 What are you, twelve?

  • @carrotjuse no I turn 14 in november

  • I love Mae West!

  • mariska looks just like her mother..(jayne)

  • @disaintshit Is Mariska the woman who starts at the beginning of the video?

  • @disaintshit Mariska does look a lot like her mom, but she's more beautiful.

  • @disaintshit wait, you mean Law and Order's Mariska is Jayne Mansfield's daughter?

  • @MsMariah61

Maybe that is true, Mae wasn't as "attractive" as other sex bombs like the traditionally beautiful idols like Marilyn but she was in a class of her own! What makes her a sex bomb is that she oozed sex from every pore, had confidence, balls and charisma that would outshine any other starlet a mile off. She used what she had, and didn't just rely on her looks. So give the lady a break for being a bit "arrogant"; if I had that much swagger at 70, I'd be a bit arrogant too!

  • @MsMariah61 To say Marilyn copied nobody is a rather bold statement. Considering her whole image was a very fake one invented for her by the studio, that sadly eventually killed her. She was not by any means the first blonde bombshell. Jean Harlow, Veronica Lake, and even Mae West. Mae West only said things like that because she herself was a twenty four year old in her own mind. She also became so involved with the Diamond Lil persona that it took over her life.

  • @MsMariah61 Mae's beauty wasn't important, she had real talent and nobody could deny that. Raquel Welch has a few skeletons in her closet also on that film. She treated Mae West terribly and even reduced her to tears at one point. Raquel Welch was very snotty and you can see that in her old interviews, cause she was always fighting the stigma she was all body and no talent. Marilyn Monroe does not have much to do with Mae at all, Marilyn was vulnerable and Mae was very confident.

  • LOL that is hilarious.. but did she win the lawsuit

  • i love mae west

  • @GeorgeCarlin100 Oh, but tells us how you really feel. LOL

  • @DeeDeeHoneybee Peter sellers ... wtf? could his comment be any more random?

  • @slh950 I doubt GeorgeCarlin100 ever knew those people, so his hatred is undeserved and clearly misplaced. I guess the internet is the place for haters to unleash their hate without having to pay any consequences. Either that or he's off his medication again.

  • @GeorgeCarlin100 Please, have the decency to keep your private sex fantasies to yourself. No one wants to hear about it!

  • Could you upload alittle more? I love it.it talks about her life latter on.

  • Marilyn waz not an inpestnator!!!!!Mae West waz an INPESTNATOR!!!!!!

  • For alenaddrabarbie--- Mae West's nose was perfect for her face, and everyone knows Monroe's was surgery. Marilyn and Mae West had two very different things to offer everyone. Unarguably West was a much more talented comedienne, and Monroe could touch ones heartstrings ( which West was not interested in doing). They can't be compared. You can't compare Lucille Ball to Rita Hayworth, just because they both had red hair.

  • 2day is Mae Wests Birthday..

  • That is NOT TRUE that MAe sued Jayne Mansfield. Jeez, I hate when they get things wrong in documentaries. Paul Novak was already in the act and punched Hargitay in the face because he insulted MAe.

  • Jayne Mansfield didn't have the innocent persona Marilyn Monroe had. Monroe had an innate vulnerability that came over the screen. Jayne Manfield's "contrived" vulnerability was too obvious and too over the top to be believed. Jayne's legacy will always be "the one who acted like Marilyn Monroe."

  • Mariska Hargitay's real father was Nelson Sardelli. Jayne had an affair with him, and Mickey raised Mariska as his own. If you look at Mariska and then Jayne's other kids with Mickey, you'll see. Find photos of Sardelli. Mariska also looks Italian. Now they didn't go around announcing it, but it is "inside news".

  • I think West was jealous Jayne & Marilyn were young and she was jealous because they didn't have a big nose

  • If Marilyn Monroe copied anyone, it would have been Jean Harlow, who although she was just an baby when Mae's career started, Jean was in films four years before Mae ever was.

  • Jayne Mansfield, and Marilyn Monroe are pretty! :)

  • I honestly don't believe she was being serious when she made the comment bout Marilyn! That's Mae West sense of humor can't you just imagine her saying that just being silly!... And NO NO NO can touch Marilyn I don't care what era what generation many have tried but not even close Marilyn was one of a kind! The most beautiful woman to grace this planet! It may not have been real but even with her plastic surgery it looked natural I can't even say anything else Marilyn was HoTT

  • Wanna see a REAL Impersonator? Check out My Channel! ... on another note, Marilyn was no Impersonator- she maybe emulated certain "universal" elements of many women who in her mind embodied glamour, beauty, & sex appeal. But she created her own style & brought an innocence & vulnerability, which the other two lacked! That is what made her an Icon & seperated her from the pack! Jayne had many talents of her own! & Mae was just an Insecure, bitter BITCH w/lame jokes!

  • Mae was ihn her 50's....

  • To call Monroe a bimbo shows your ignorance. And yes, Mae was intelligent, but she was also deluded. She thought she was still hot at 70! And, she had a tiny range as an actress--always played herself. Imagine her trying to play a role as real and demanding as the one Marilyn planed in The Misfits? Ha ha.

  • It's true Mae reigns supreme. She was intelligent, witty, very talented both as a performer and writer, beautiful with a unique sexuality, even thought she was much older than the other two. Jayne and Marilyn were pretty in their own right but I think Ms. West had a lot more going for her. When you put a true artist against two bimbos there's no contest. She is a true credit to the arts and the epitome of feminine beauty!

  • Monroe was a little better looking but she was not as smart as Jayne

  • i love Jayne!!!!!

  • Sorry-no comparison. no disrespect but they have zero in common. Carey has implants while Mae was all natural. Mariah Carey is actually totally original. I like her.

  • Read what I wrote they both were beefy and big in the top husky looking Mae's was natural my grandmother and mother both worked for Ms. West they brought it to my attention first and as I looked more and more at Mariah it became clear that she was top heavy and tall just like Mae....

  • but mariah carey has huge breast implants and she lacks mae west's hip to waist ratio-an hourglass that West still maintained even when on the plumper side. apples and oranges, their bodies are completely different!

  • I respect your opinion she just reminds me of Mae and bigger then life personality I'm not even a Mariah fan I much rather see Toni Braxton but I love Mae West even though I never saw anything with her until I was at leasr 15 or so I think the world of the talent she had Mariah just has that same feel FOR ME personally but again I respect everything everyone says!

  • @ifusuckilltellu - lol clever comment lol

  • What exactly is the person of 1:26???

    Man, woman or alien?

  • Mansfield should've stayed brunette...she looks like a nasty skank as a blonde. We all know who would've won in a good, old fashioned, fist fight between the broads too. If they were all the same age and all went at it...Mae would cold cock those other two lol. Then she'd make a smart remark and say something like..."c'mon boys I've worked up quite an appetite wiping the floor with these girls" lol.

  • You're right. One thing that Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn didn't have was quick wit, just like Mae West, plus that sexual humour we all enjoy!

  • Or any wits at all! lol. Man I wish there were dames like her around nowadays! There kinda are I gues...but none like her for sure.

  • Mae had situational dramatic and verbal wit galore -- she a playwright as well as actress, and queen, pre- Bob Hope, of the repartee snappy comeback, one liner. But too, Jayne and Marilyn could flash it: YouTube has a video of Jayne replying to a 1950s tv interviewer's Q, what role (of a series of beauty-contestant titles she'd won) was her favorite -- "Mother!" And a Google of MM's quotes includes her saying that her favorite thing to wear was Chanel No. 5 (a chic perfume).

  • (cont.) But if (as Horace Walpole in 1700s said) "Life is a comedy to those who think, a tragedy to those who feel," then of the three, perhaps Marilyn had too much early-life and later personal tragedy to achieve Mae's emotionally aloof, ironic comic perceptions.

  • The information in this video isn't completely true. I was around at that time (1956) and the papers reported that Mae called a news conference to update reporters on the Mansfield-Hargitay affair and state that she was going to replace Mickey as her lead muscleman. Things got heated, and before you knew it, Paul Novak (then known as Chuck Krauser, which he had changed from the previous name of Chester Ribonsky) slugged Mickey, cut his lip, gave him a black eye, and knocked him down.

  • I read a couple bio's on Mae, she disliked ALL other females (unless homely, like Margaret Hamilton)....to me, this is a sign of insecurity. And she never sued Jayne, it was a fight as described here. Why don't they fact-check these "documentaries"?

  • who's the shit talker that starts talking?

  • Mae looks so pretty in that still shot with paul Novak! (2.48)

and RIP Mickey Hargitay, a nice guy in hollywood

ps togas on the outside, taken off to reveal LOINCLOTHS woman!

  • It sounds like "companion" Paul Novak was a gay guy, if you read between the lines here. I don't recall that Mae sued Jayne, tho' there was a fight at the press conference between Paul and Mickey.

  • Marilyn Monroe is way prettyer

  • Honey, I think you mean "prettier."

I guess carbon copies don't come with spell checks. :)

  • Was Mae 63 years of age in 1956? ( believed she was born in 1893)

  • 2:10 in 1956, MW was not in her 70s.

  • I know ... I thought that when I saw it!

  • @wattever333 She was 63.

  • @Dawnina77 I said she was NOT in her 70s. And it was a reply to someone else.

  • @wattever333 So why don't you get defensive because I just stated her age! I was actually agreeing with you, but you can take your snotty attitude and shove it right up your *** :)

  • @Dawnina77 wow, and you saw snottiness in what I said? LMAO. you must get angry a lot.

  • @wattever333 LOL! I was being facetious, notice the smiley face? I don't think I get angry a lot, unless I'm in a car surrounded by idiot drivers! Anyway no harm no foul, I was just stating a fact, thought I was helping to prove your point.

  • with friendliness like that, who needs enmity.

  • @wattever333 Are you deaf? she said by the 50's Mae was in her 60's!

  • @sansomdela I never said the contrary. So I don't know what you are referring to.

  • I just figured it out. sansomdela and dawnina77 (if they are really 2 different people) are playing the old "flaming" game, which consists of screaming vulgarities at people just to see how they will react. They are trolls. These people appear all over youtube and other websites just annoy people. They choose someone randomly and they start hurling insults and profanities just to get a reaction.

  • @wattever333 correct. she was born in 1892(some say 1893) so she was either 64 or 65 in 1956

  • @mrwoozits I think you mean "either 64 or 63 in 1956".

  • @wattever333 touche' lol

  • @wattever333 Close

  • This isn't how it happened. Mansfield held a press conference 2 cash in on the publicity of Mickey Leaving Mae's Show. SHE painted the story as Jayne Mansfield steals Mae's man. Mae crashed the press conference, saying "if theyre going to talk about me let them do it to my face". Mae walked right up to Jayne & said "get a career of your own & stop using my name for publicity". Mansfield was totally out classed by Mae & pushed her infront of the press. Mae sued Mickey for breach of contract.

  • how do u know all that?

  • selfidentity1, It has been detailed in several biographies.

  • mae west has nothing on marilyn monroe

  • what a stupid reason to sue someone for...

  • yEAH I AGREE

  • Do these boys wear diapers ??

  • As far as I know Mae West never had children but Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargity produced the beautiful Mariska Hargity star of L & A SVU.

  • Mansfield had 5 children in total

  • @Georgewos West had a child in 1911.She was married.I don't know who hurt her,but I think most of us can see behind the shell.I read that twice,in Gone But Not Forgotten and in It Aint No Sin.

  • MMMM, methinks I'll hire a chorus line of gorgeous males to follow me wherever I go. Mae ruled!

  • she sued her?

    did she win?

  • Crazyy!!

  • WOW, the stars of all stars ever!!! We love you Mae........

  • Great stuff, thanks for posting!

  • Hello slh950 Really enjoyed viewing this clip. I've been working on a manuscript entitled "In Search Of Mae West" and have come across a copy of an outrageous anonymous letter she intended to send to Louella Parsons blasting Jayne. She never forgave the loss of Mickey, even though she feel in love with Paul Novak. Could you please contact me with info on how I might obtain a copy of the full show? Cheers. R. Mark Desjardins.

  • Not really. Mae still has a loyal following to this day.

  • mae west is the forgotten sex symbol of all time

  • jayne mansfield completley stole Marilyns look

  • You see a leopard-skin bikini or pink cadillac and think Mansfield ... she did carve out her own distinct niche

she did start out though with a parody of Marilyn on broadway

  • How? Jayne was campy and extravagant, totally unlike Marilyn.

  • maybe not personality wise, but lookwise

just go onto google their hair, look, poses in pictures and Jayne is even wearing exact outifts Marilyn wore, she just made them more revealing and less classy.

  • Jayne did wear exact outfits Marilyn wore, and Marilyn too also wore hand-me-downs Fox lended from other actresses like Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, and Lana Turner. Neither were trendsetters in regards to their hair; the pageboy hairstyle had been popularised in both short an long styles since the 30's and 40's, but it was actually Jayne who wore white-blonde hair before MM. I've never noticed similar poses, but then I've seen many pin-ups and the poses MM and JM did were both very standard.

  • PinkGoddess, have you read the two Marilyn books by James Haspiel? He was a personal friend of both Marilyn and Jayne. He stated that Jayne was a fan of Marilyn's and did many things to imitate her. She really wanted to be the next Marilyn Monroe.

  • It's documented that Jayne wore the same studio outfits for publicity that Marilyn had worn previously. Also, she announced in 1962 that she would study acting in New York, as Marilyn did with the Actors Studio starting in 1955. In 1963, on the Jack Benny show, Jayne even did the same comedy skit Marilyn did with Jack Benny when she appeared on his show in 1953. So, although they are different personalities and ended up with dissimilar careers, it's clear Jayne was copying Marilyn's "gameplan".

  • Yes, and Marilyn had worn the sameoutfits that other women wore too, Fox was famous for being cheap and that was a result. Jayne wanted to study acting in NY because her then to be husband at the time, Matt Cimber was a broadway producer and promised her a career as a serious actress, something she always hoped for. With the Jack Benny show, Jayne again did not choose the skit. The studios at the time loved to 'replace' their most marketable stars and in doing so, moulded newcomers accordingly.

  • No I haven't, but I have discussed it with Jayne fans and they claim at the time Haspiel claimed to be living with Jayne, she was actually alone. I don't know enough to comment on his books, but I'm aware of some of Haspiel's claims and they don't surprise me. He was a huge Marilyn fan, and being obsessed as he was leads to a certain amount of bias.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx - I don't think Haspiel said he was living with Jayne. He just stayed at her hotel room in New York one night. He never really said anything bad about Jayne, and his book really was about Marilyn anyway.

  • trystane, I too believe Jayne liked Marilyn, but she also wanted TO BE Marilyn. I bet Mae hated them both.

  • I am a huge fan but to call Marilyn a carbon copy is dillusional. Mae was not really a sex symbol as much as a sex comedienne..thats why the lonegvity

  • What documentary is this from and how can I get a copy? I thought I'd seen them all, but I've never seen this one - and it looks good.

  • Hi Bellov; its from an English series called "Living Famously", other biographies in this series were Jayne Mansfield, Karen Carpenter ... and too many to remember!

  • eh Mae was such a b*tch! i dont like her at all! she was kinda ugly on that clip! dont know how these guys saw her attractive

  • same! i dont like mae!!

  • May sure had a lot of self-pride to call Marilyn a carbon copy of herself. Anyone who has seen Marilyn or is familiar with her knows that she projects total vulnerability and innocence on screen...180 degrees from Mae. I actually read a quote from Mae about how she saw Marilyn once and always regretted not meeting her, and she also said "the only girl who came near to me in the sex-appeal department was pretty little Marilyn Monroe. All the others had were big boobs".

  • heh it was probably a very vaudevillian attitude to creating a persona ... also, she lived in her own world - see the other clips I captured

  • Yes, I agree it was probably a publicity thing, but I also think May was pretty insecure when it came to her fellow competitors. She and Jayne exchanged a few funny barbs between each other in the press!

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx Where did you find that quote?

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx "Anyone who has seen Marilyn or is familiar with her knows that she projects total vulnerability and innocence on screen...180 degrees from Mae."

Yeah, you've got that right. Can you imagine Marilyn ever uttering the line, "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

Yes, I know, Mae never said that either. But there's a reason she's credited with it: It fits her persona to a T.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx Well, Mae may have had a lot of self-pride to call Marilyn a carbon copy, but didn't Mae invent the blond bombshell image? And Marilyn was a variation of that. While Mae was a predatory blond, Marilyn was a vulnerable blond. Two different personality types of the same image. Marilyn the sex goddess of the 1950's and Mae the sex goddess of the 1930's.

  • @Rayarena Jean Harlow invented the blonde bombshell image, and Marilyn had a great deal more in common with Jean than she did Mae.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx Mae and Jean Harlow started making movies at around the same time, and while Jean was known as "The Blond Bombshell," Mae was has blond as Jean. So, I don't know who copied who, or if they arrived at the same basic image independently.
