I have a 29 gallon Biocube myself......almost the same setup as you (fish stock and coral). I tried a couple of times to raise a mandarin in mine as well.....but no luck. They live for a couple months then end up dying. Doesn't seem like they ate that much. I tried adding Copapods,.....still nothing. Did you have your mandarin for long, and if so, does he eat normal frozen brine shimp or ??????
@JohnMrugala Best advice- Seed with pods. Wait 2 months and if you see little bugs running about in the middle of the night, you have a good stock. Then, go to the LFS and ask them to thaw out a small amount of mysis/brine. Have them throw it in and sit there and wait for the first one to eat it. If you find an aggressive eater, do not take your eyes off him. If none bother with the food, wait till the next shipment arrives and try again. I have had my mandarin for about 2 years maybe more.
@TheHaleMoana funny thing is the lionfish is a fuzzy dwarf, which only growws to about 6 inchs max if that, hints the name DWARF, research before you post
Do you ad copepods or is the just the ones living in the live rock?
Did you do anything to get the mandarin to eat brine shrimp and mysis or are you just lucky that it eats? (I will soon get a mandarin, but is not sure if I have enough pods.) I have 160L = 42,26G 50+ lbs LR.
live rock is VANUATU.. and all it takes is a 15% weekly waterchange to make anything possible...and plus a larger tank wouldnt hurt to put the hippo tang in when he gets bigger...(he is currently in my 125 and is about 6 inches long. VIDEO OF MY 125 comming soon, stay tuned.
I'm so amazed that you can keep a reef tank of this size so heavily stocked! A lionfish? A mandarin which are not the easiest fish to keep due to their finicky eating behaviors? And a blue tang which get very stressed in cramped conditions? How long have you had all these species together and do they appear happy and comfortable? I wouldn't imagine so!
you only can do it if you do a 20% waterchange weekly. you CANNOT skip even but one week. The lion is of the dwarf species. he eats mysis. the mandarin survives on copepods and also eats brine shrimp and pieces of mysis...in this tank i also have a hippo tang, percula clownfish, bengai cardinal, flasher wrasse, toby puffer and several snails/hermits/emeralds. coral supplement that i use is strontium and mag...and i feed them oyster/phyto feast. light cycle is 8 hr white, 10 blue..stock light
i just set up a biocube and am currently letting it cycle i'm kinda new to the saltwater side of aquariums and was wondering i heard the madarin shouldnt be in a tank smaller than 50 gallons and it needs to be well established and that a lionfish should be in a fish only tank how are you managing having these fish in a mini reed and only a 30 gallon cuz they are both my 2 favorite fish and if your doing it maybe theres a way for me to as well

@koaihet31 I wouldn't get one unless you have at LEAST a 55-90 gallon, they need to swim.
