By what definition does BSG not fall into the genre of Science Fiction? please remember that sci-fi is a sub genre of fantasy. this show gives you a futurist (past?) setting, space and ground battles with cool special effects, moral and ethical issues, and tons of character growth. giving it a darker setting was also a nice touch.

That was nice, I agree, but it just doesn't cut it anymore. We're done telling about utopias. Sci-fi is has been growing up for the last 40 years and claiming its place amongs the significant works.
I understand if the new BSG is nog your thing, but don't say it's crap. It isn't. It's different from what we're used to see. But I think it's a good way for sci-fi to go.
@CallmeButton I personally did not care for the new BSG at first. Over the course of a season or two I realized what a fantastic series it really is. It is far greater than the original series. In fact, I might say the original took a good concept and made a very average TV series, while the new series grew the concept and execution both into an incredible story.
Isaac Asimov did the same. But here the 3 laws don't work. It makes it spicy. And the rest of the characters, they work for me. They are no longer the idealistic and naive characters that we've seen to much an sci-fi's. It's like B5, but grittier, Blade Runner, but more epic. The whole contemporary Ikea-look is extremely wel cultivated. It only enriching to the series and doesn't defy my personal sense sci-fi standards. Sci-fi can no longer aford to be naive in its perfect little world...
@CallmeButton havn't read Asimov since I was a kid, but didn't he do a story about the three laws coming into conflict with each other? I can see some Asimov in BSG, also Blade Runner.
Yeah, that was an interesting concept Asimov tried to explore in his work. Almost all of Asimovs robot stories are about the concept of the 3 laws that workable, but imperfect.
I think when you're exploring robots, you're somehow always gonna end up with a little Asimov in your work. He was one of the people who laid the basis on modern day robot-fiction.
Dude, it was one of the best sci-fi scenario's in quite some time. I know it's far away from the original. It takes an other way of looking at sci-fi, which is not eveyone's cup of tea, I understand that. But it was actually good. Very good. The oldskool lovers can buy the box for 15 euros. Personally I think they did a great job at making something that was awesome in the 80's (and 90's too, I guess) to something that was completely awesome 21st centurywise.
...besides, I thouht it was so cool that they actually intergrated the esthetics of the old series into the new series as being 'retro'. The oldskool centurions were so cool. Glad they put them in there somewhere.
I don't agree, to be honoust. I thinkt the 'familiar yet different' take is a refreshing one. The art-direction was very thorough in their concept, everything fits. It has a very sharp line that apeals to both our underbelly and our sense of poetics at once. I agree, it's not sci-fi in the original sense, but it's nevertheless good sci-fi. The concept of the cylons is so much deeper than the ots could do. The whole frankenstein complex is a wonderfull thing to use in a story...

Whoever made the scenarios for the new version should be whipped publicly with a 9 tailed cat.

The new BSG can hardly be called science fiction.
The makers slacked, nearly everything, including the characters, is crap.
