  • Clapton was drunk 24/7 during this period of his life, and this video shows that. Poor guy :( I really feel for him; alcoholism is a TERRIBLE disease to be afflicted with. A miserable, terrified existence. Thank God he got the help he needed and he's not only sober now, but still blessing us with his wonderful musicianship. CLAPTON IS GOD.

  • Are those flames shooting off that thing?

  • EL mejor guitarrista del blues supero a BB.king y a los otros kings, y tambien al vulgar y rustico guitarrista hendrix que es mega sobrevalorado por los chicos de hoy en dia.

    Clapton is God!

  • are there really people who are shit talking on this? go shoot yourself in the head... you have no soul.

  • Word

  • Hes super drunk..

  • Hes doing some SRV here or maybe SRV saw this and inspired him , who knows ?

  • @wisesatyr72 This is before SRV ......

  • Check out the Old Grey Whistle Test version of this. Fantastic.

  • He does a much better job of this song in recent years... he's sober, his voice growls at a lower pitch, and his Strat tones are thicker and distorted. However, this is still a fantastic performance and interview, albeit drunk. Any vintage Clapton videos are good with me.

God bless us

  • what a beast!!!

  • I love all the great blues guitarists, people like Roy Buchanan, Mike Bloomfield, Rory Gallagher, Peter Green, they are all great. But Clapton stands above them in my personal taste.

  • I want that tone!

  • Very sincere version, but I don't like the way his strat sounds. That bridge pickup is just too trebly.

  • hammered drunk

  • sometimes its not what you play its what you leave out, and these guys understood that perfectly

  • BLACKIE!!!!

  • Guitar full of soul. Legendary !

  • I love in lo-fi quality ! it's perfect for a blues. ^^

  • the blues crosses all color barers

  • Pure emotion. The blues can only be played when a musician is f*cked up. He doesn't move like Hendrix/Pete Townshed/Beck etc. He only moves his face. I think that's what makes a purist

  • Clapton lost something when he cleaned up.....having said that, no one can be in that much pain forever.

  • Comment removed

  • True cbrim78. He is one of the few who plays what he feels

  • Blackie sounded so mean and dirty..thats the way I like it..

  • ...playing "Blackie"....

  • he's god of tha blues, no doubt

  • @papasieg are you a white guy?

  • double crick

  • I agree with SHUNGBALI

  • Stardust 260872 ......Do you play?

  • in his defence he was wankererd 24/7 in the 70s

and was a bit of an arsehole

  • @curlybluesman

    Cunt

  • @stardust260872 Hey, everyone has an opinion. I completely disagree with your comment. But, there I caught myself doing it again. I got pulled into this BS of who is the best guitarist game. And Hendrix was interesting, but sloppy and shitty for the most part. Distortion to the MAX. His recorded music is garbage. Just like Townshend saying Hendrix was going to put them all out of business. WTF? He died and that's that. The greats are still with us. That's just my opinion in a nutshell.

  • @maximum1954

Live, Hendrix sucked a lot. But his recorded music is garbage? Maybe Hendrix's music didn't speak to you, but it certainly wasn't garbage. Choice of words is important and I'm sure most of the time people don't really think before they open their mouths.

  • sccrhns. Yes, you are right. I got caught in the crossfire of stupidity. There are many opinions on youtube and many young people who spout out obnoxious comments to piss people off and once in while I get caught between the people that shoot their mouth off and literally try to get people mad. For that I apologize as I was actually fighting fire with fire. I am a session guitarist and to say Hendrix is garbage was wrong. For me he just didn't move me even though I have an appreciation for him.

  • @sccrhns Hendrix sucked live? Wrong. Have you heard his "Star Spangled Banner?" He was one of the BEST live.

  • I didn't say that right... I meant that live Hendrix's performances were inconsistent. But, if you read the whole paragraph I'm defending Hendrix; I'm a huge Hendrix fan. So I think we're on the same page actually, I hope.

  • We are for sure on the same page, and I did read the whole paragraph, but it is still a mistake to say Hendrix sucked "a lot" live. He was stunning live, as hundreds of recorded performances show.

  • @stardust260872

    Cocknose

  • @stardust

he wasn't being pompous. if you knew anything about eric you'd see that he's been very insecure about himself his entire life. always thinking he was never good enough.

  • @TheEvilelvis89 honesty , modesty, and integrity that´s Clapton Hell yea!! to your comment!!! Page on the contrary wanted desperate to be a guitar god...Clapton in the other way ..was looking more for a honest approach in his playing ....Where´s Page right now???? and Clapton still touring, still making music, and still getting recognition...!!

  • @vakeromty Page doesn't have to do anything. He's done it all. He's 67. Give him a break!

  • Purchased me a Black Strat with Maple fretboard last nite on ebay. Think I will call it "Blackie"

  • this is my favorite ear of Clapton...mid to late 70's.

  • some of you may be right or wrong...all I now is CLAPTON FOREVER!!!!!

  • 70's Clapton is the best

  • His tone is more raw and earthy then you expect from him...more of a modern buddy guy which is interesting when you think about it.

  • his golden years?

  • definitely not his golden years....He plays better now and is more together than he was in the late 70's..too much alcohol then. If you were to compare the Dominos of the early 70's that would be a different story...

  • no way.....for most of the 70's he was fatigued and drunk...the best is clapton of the year 1970!! derek and the dominos live at the filmore...before the heroin!

  • the best song ever...played by a men so drunk...great...only Clap can do this that way

  • Eric Clapton FOREVER!!!!!!

  • Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Eric Clapton's fan and this isn't a try to make fun of him this is a great version looks like he's so deep in the blues while he plays but is he saying "some fuckin' old trouble"? Because if this is the case this is the first time I ever hear Eric Clapton swearing...And this is pretty funny. Keep it up thanks for posting!

  • He's not swearing. This is the lyrics:

    I lay awake at night.

Just for some love, you know i'm troubled.

    I can't get a job

I am laid off and i'm having double trouble.

  • Myfavourite version of this song i think.

  • Stoned or sober..who gives a shit..pure down and dirty blues. Rock on God.

  • he is the greatest simply because hes still alive today. so much he overcame.

  • Year thats right. He is one who went through hell. And he fought back and he is still playing. So he earns oure deepest respect for that.

  • in 1971 when derek and the dominos was recorded clapton was at his worst herion addiction. He and Duane allman were sitting in the recording studio with huge sacks of cocaine and herion just sitting around the studio . this has been documented it the biography of duane allman

  • neither duane or eric would ever ever shoot up though, ever. they were totally against that, especially duane

  • so what are you saying that EC wasn't on Heroin?

  • they didnt shoot it, nothin about not doing it

  • ec sniffed heroin.

  • they snorted the heroin man. you aint gotta just shoot it. clapton himself said he was terrified of needles since a young age.

  • hahahaha huge sacks of cocaine and heroin, hahah

  • Maaan, this is fantastic.

  • I wish all u losers would shut the F@#k up!! nobody can play like this man....EC makes that piece of wood and metal sing...like nobody else ever will...

  • SRV could

  • as could eric, Jimi, BB, Albert Collins, Albert King, Freddy King, Buddy Guy to name a few, SRV was not the only on who could make the guitar sing you know lol.

  • @cbirm78 Please...opinions are like assholes....everyone has one.

  • true

  • @cbirm78 amen my brother

  • seems to be just hanging on

  • To me, this era IS Clapton.

  • He had been drinking at this point for a couple years. This is about the time when it started to progress very heavily. And no he wasn't on heroin at this point that was from about 70 to 73 or so.

  • This Rolling Hotel documentary, to me is do interesting, does anybody have the majority or all of this?

  • the most authentic Clapton

  • He's drunk or something...

  • he wasn't on heroine in 1978 :P

  • Nice!!! good call on that. He was a real drunk though all through the 80's as well. Cheers

  • yup :)until 86 or something....just wanted to state that he was only on heroine for a few years..from 68-73 or something...not in the 80es at all even though loads of people come with comments like 66barrys...

  • lol, i saw an interview with eric and he said that he was so drunk at a concert once that he lay down on the stage with the mike and played the whole set like that. The crowd was probably wasted anyway.

  • I just read that passage in his autobiography. its unreal how many years he spent out of his mind. miracle he's still alive.

  • Yes! "Just One Night" (Japan)features the most extraordinary version of this song. Also the most outstanding solo to "Cocaine"!

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Named after this song.

  • He's deffinatley tossed. Its a shame he was just kind of drifting through life obliviously at this point.

  • This a brilliant version, though Eric seems somewhat drunk. Must have been his alcoholic period.

  • @ bluesjamlive: absolutely true!!

on this album is also the best version of wonderful tonight

  • The best version of this is still from the "Just One Night" live album.

  • thanks for posting this, very interesting interview, too....my god is clapton

  • legendary, He is my favorite guitarist

  • I wish there were more Rolling Hotel clips like this on YouTube. I've always wanted to see this documentary for some horrible reason.

  • ahhh Blackie

  • Clapton rules;)

  • awesome !
